I wondered about that too. I just assumed that the Vic hologram was physically based on a real person... whom I guess was also named Vic Fontaine. :p

We never saw this person in the regular universe, but we did briefly see his counterpart in the Mirror Universe. That's my theory, anyway.

I enjoyed the character...then, I like the songs. Nice contrast with the heavy plot lines too!

Vic's good people. I think he adds a lot to the family atmosphere of Seasons Six and Seven. I realize he wasn't everyone's cup of tea but I loved him from the second he appeared on the show.

He just strikes me as something the production team thought was cool and hence...it felt like his presence was in every episode. I just couldn't stand him because all the while I was thinkng....er, we could be doing something else instead of letting you production types run amok in your own personal Rat Pack fantasy!

I agree with those who don't like Vic - nothing against the performance, but he always seemed very out of place on DS9 and the idea never gelled with me.

I was indifferent to Vic.

I like what he is (a hologram). Makes Vic the same species as Minuet, Professor Moriarty, his Wife, & The Doctor, among others.

Vic was played by James Darren, who co-starred with Robert Colbert on Irwin Allen's "The Time Tunnel" back in the 60's.

Although I like DS9 very much, this character somehow always rubbed me the wrong way.
So, out of curiosity, a simple poll : did you like this character or not?

YES!!! I liked VIC very much so. And, having seen Mr. Darren in concert three years ago, I have to say he put on a great show. He even showed clips of DS9 during the concert. And we're talking about a guy singing Sinatra songs, and I was surprised at how many younger people were there. Its nice to know that SOME of the youth out there appreciate great music. And Vic/James Darrin/Ira Steven Behr and DS9 producers must be applauded!!!

Wasn't Vic just Frank Sinatra in the 24th century?

Think more Sanatra-esk. Not a true knock off, but shares some recognizable qualities. BTW, voted a BIG yes here. Vic was great.

I liked the character for the most part and I think he was often utilized quite well. He was an interesting character to add to the DS9 mix. But, there were definitely episodes where his numbers felt like padding, and I think those episodes would have been better without those scenes. Having said that, I think the character worked more often than not, and when the show ended, it felt like he belonged there.

I can see why the characters would enjoy hanging out at Vic's place over that French pub with the pool table.

Re. Daneel: I don't think you could have used Ezri instead of Vic. The fact that Nog was running into a virtual fantasy was part of the point, I think. And the fact that Vic is so engaging, so charming made it all the more easy for him to get lost in that existence. It also showed the barriers between Nog's and Vic's lives.

Yeah, you might be right... I admit, it's been quite awhile since I've seen that episode, so it may be that using Vic makes sense. As I said, though, I felt that he was getting a bit overused. As neogothboy74 put it, some of his scenes and musical numbers just felt like filler -- like they were just padding the episode with his appearances, and it felt superfluous. Plus, there were times it felt like he was getting the spotlight at the expense of some of the regulars, and I think that's what it felt like to me for "It's Only a Paper Moon".

My thoughts exactly.

There was nothing wrong with Vic as a character, but after reading the comments in the DS9 companion about how much they loved his era, it made the frequent returns to his program feel like they were letting something else drop in order to have another Vic episode - Badda-Bing, Badda-Bang being the pits.

It's great when DS9 gave the spotlight to non-regulars like Vic, and tons of others. In fact, that is precisely way DS9 is by far the best Trek show. It's too bad that DS9 didn't do that more often. Vic was way better and more screen-time worthy than Ezri, for example. Screen-time & episodes focusing on Ezri - now that's some really bad filler. :alienblush:

Oh, I agree that certain non-regulars were deserving of a decent amount of screentime -- Garak, Dukat, Damar, Martok, Winn, Rom, Weyoun, etc. I personally just wouldn't include Vic in that category. I'm not saying he deserved to be cut out completely, it's just... well, I think Philip Culley and Kirk1980 summed it up nicely: it felt like the whole Vegas nightclub thing was an indulgence of the writers, and I didn't share their interest in seeing it on a semi-regular basis. I just felt like there were better stories they could be telling besides these ones. >shrugs< But hey, that's my opinion.

Oh, and I liked Ezri, so I didn't mind the occasional focus on her (even if one or two of the Ezri-centric episodes were kind of average).
