Hair Care

I sometimes miss having a ponytail. When my hair was long it was awesome, but I have really thick heavy hair, so after having shoulder length hair for so long, (and getting yelled at for dress code violations in school because of it) I chopped it off.

It took me years to get out of the habit of tucking my non-existent long hair behind my ears.

You are all making me feel high-maintenance! I wash and blow-dry my hair every morning. Well, I usually dry it at least halfway. I think if I didn't, it would take the whole day to dry. Every now and then I chop a few feet off my hair, but I can't be bothered to go in for regular trims.

My hair can be stick straight or wavy depending on the day, so I've been known to run a straightener through it. I never curl it though. My sis once found a curling iron in my room and demanded to know why I had it, because she knows I have no clue how to use one!

I use this and this. They seem to work very well with my hair.

Great. Thanks for the links. I like that they use botanical ingredients and aren't too expensive... I've been using Aveda products which also use plant essences, but are a rather big hit to my pocket. I've been on the market for something else similar for a while now. Seems a good place to start. Thanks!

My hair becomes dry and brittle quite easily and doesn't respond well to Pantene, and all that jazz - way too harsh. I merely wash condition and moisturise my hair (black hair needs far more moisturisation to remain in good condition). I don't shampoo it any more often then every four days, as they don't look as good otherwise. I only blow dry and flat iron for very special occasions, maybe once a year - it's always raining, so there's hardly any point trying to keep it straight regularly.

As to how often I trim, it used to be every 6 weeks, but that was when I liked to keep it short. Now, I'm trying to grow it to shoulder length so haven't trimmed in over a year. Some split ends beginning to appear, but I'm not ready for a cut yet. I had a falling out with my last hairdresser, and I'm quite scared of going to a new one! I'm quite precise about exactly how I want it, and it's not every hairdresser who can do that.

I think mine is in alright condition, considering it's low maintenance.

Fairly low maintenance. It's baby-fine and straight, so I get it cut in a bob every 6 weeks. Wash & blow dry (using fingers to style) every morning. And that's it.

No color. I've only got about 6 gray hairs and I'm proud of 'em. :p

Pantene is absolutely horrible on my hair too! A lot of stuff in that bracket - Pantene, L'Oreal type stuff - is horrible on my hair now, it's too used to that stuff/Original Source/Lush etc.

^ It's a wonder anyone buys it! I've been told Dove is alright for it's price range - especially their conditioner, but I'm not willing to test that theory!

My hair is short. It's cut into a pixie cut. I've had it cut this way for years well before the term "Pixie cut" was even invented. I like my hair short for lots of reasons, one of them being that it's low maintenance. After having said that, short hair still needs styling and I take time to do that, ususally with hair putty or spray gel. I can make it into several styles. It gets washed every other day and cut every 5 weeks. I colour it every 2 months. Blonde, usually. Sometimes pillar-box red. I use Dove shampoo. I find it works really well. My hair hates Timoti and Herbal Essences.

Dove is pretty good. I actually like to use Suave from time to time. It's cheap, but does the job nicely.

I wish I had thicker hair so I actually could do something interesting with it.

As it is, I just keep it combed back, with a smidgen of Toni & Guys label m soft wax (a bit of a misnomer because it's more like the consistency of thick cream). It's fucking ridiculously expensive (£11 for a can) but it's the only product I can find that provides a little hold and doesn't leave my hair greasy or sticky or brittle/hard. And I only need a really small amount each day so it lasts a fairly long.

If anyone can recommend a cheaper supermarket alternative, I'm all ears.

Shampoo & conditioner-wise, I just use Pantene (their Ice Shine stuff I think). Never really had the inclination to explore further since with short hair I don't expect it really makes much of a difference anyway.

Then I thought you were a lot younger than you are...

I had a pixie cut (and it was called that) back in 1960.

As for products...

I use Pureology Pure Volume (pink bottle) shampoo, no conditioner, Redken Fabricate before blow drying, and a light spritz of Frederic Fekkai hairspray.

The most important part of the equation is Natasha, who is simply a goddess among stylists.

If your hair's not thick and you're looking for more volume, you might explore other options--and one could be ignoring conditioner altogether.

A lot of the "volume" products contain silicone, which actually weighs the hair down.

Maybe that's because I've only just heard it! I've had it cut like this since I was a child. I'm 43.

Okay, you're still older than I thought you were, but yeah, that name's been around for a long time.

;)

^ I think I might have been thinking of the "elfin cut" - the cut that Victoria Beckham had a little while ago.

Maybe. They've given different names to it over the years... It was "pixie" when I was a kid, then it was the "Mia Farrow" when she chopped her hair off in the mid-60s, then when I was in college they called it a "crop cut," then there's been "elfin" and I'm sure a few other iterations in there.... ;)

It's all the same cut.

^ I guess so. I was watching an item on tv this morning that was telling me that big 80's hair is back ... guess there's nothing new under the sun! :)

All fashion is is recycling and updating.

I just finished a sweater I adapted from a pattern published in 1933.
