Scotty's role in the new film? (spoilers)

Stag

Rear Admiral
Rear Admiral
What do you think Scotty's role will be in the new film? We already know that he is found on the ice planet with Kirk and brought back with old Spock. But is he the chief engineer? does he become the chief engineer? or is he simply along for the ride?

Any speculation on how he will become the chief engineer?

I'm guessing that
is in on it with old Spock so perhaps his engineering abilities are somehow necessary to stop the Narada's weaponry. I also think that Olsen bites it when they dive onto the drilling rig, and Pike or Acting Captain Kirk makes Scotty Acting Chief Engineer. He probably performs some heroics to 'redeem' himself and earn the full post.

THAT indeed would make perfect sense and explain a whole lot. :techman:

I agree,
in on something with Old Spock and something he does will win him a post.

Since the first time I heard and seen him in the trailer saying that line: I like this ship, it exciting! I have had the sneaking suspicion he knows this isn't the correct Enterprise. Just look at the way he is almost breaking the forth wall as he says it. It's like, wink, wink.

I'm still wondering if the Admiral he makes reference to is the character we know, or a descendant of his.

Failing a direct contradiction, I will assume a descendant (specifically, a son)
the beagle.

...definitely in on it with Old Spock,
brings him knowledge of tech which will be invented in the future by Scotty himself.

It's also interesting that you chose the word 'redeem', as not only is Scotty supposed to have been assigned to the ice planet after an experiment gone wrong gets him on the Admiral's shit-list, but in all of the bridge pictures showing Scotty wet-haired and in his ice planet coat and gloves (including his "I like this ship -- it's excitin'!" line) you'll note that he's standing with his hands raised, as if he's got someone pointing a phaser at him.

I predict that in the final action sequence Scotty will...

Use his skills to beam Old Spock out of his timeship just before it gets blowed up. Maybe. Assuming Old Spock doesn't finally pop his clogs as many think...

Could be. Afterall, we do see the time ship slam into one of the Enterprises in the trailer.

Unless this is the end for Old Spock, future Spock dies in the past. Could be a poignant ending.

Interesting, and agreed. In this regard, he would still in character be a lot more like ole Scotty than most people feared.

I missed that 'one of the Enterprises' bit on the first go. Care to explain your meaning?

(I also thought it was the Narada.)

Well i keep hearing and reading things about two different ships etc, alternate crap like that.

didnt mean anything specific by it.

Ill nip in and edit to make it clearer

This is what I under stand ...
Kirk is stranded on Delta Vega (the ice planet) by Spock (after getting on Spock's nerves), where after facing the big red slobbering monster, he meets up with Spock Prime (Nimoy).

Spock explains that he's from the Future, performs some necessary information exchange and exposition, then introduces Scotty, who was stranded on Delta Vega for vaporizing the Admiral's Beagle.

Scotty is accompanied by a small creature, some kind of assistant possibly.

Spock explains to Kirk that he has to take command using Starfleet regulations on the grounds that Spock (Quinto) is emotionally unstable, then go from there to stop Nero from doing something bad.

Spock gives Scotty his own formula from the future for Inter-warp (long distance) beaming, and this gets Kirk and Scotty back to the Enterprise.

Chief Engineer Olson was killed earlier, when they did the Space-diving operation to Vulcan to stop Narada's drill beam from finishing up, and thus prevent the Red Matter being planted in the guts of Vulcan to create a Black Hole.

Olson is killed because his chute fails to open in time.

Of course, Olson is wearing red :)

At least, that is according to what I've read of the 20 minute preview given to selected members of the press. :bolian:

As for the identity of the Admiral...

Archer

...I don't think it's his descendant. The parallel is too close. Besides, the 'original' never had any children, and we know *he* will also one day become an Admiral. So it must be him.

But doesn't that rewrite the idea that he was Federation President by, what, 2190? If so that's a little annoying... I don't really care but I'm sure a lot of other people will.

If it is an alternate time line I think they can pretty much have free reign to do as they please.
