Should 'Star Trek XII'/'Star Trek 2012' at least be inspired by TOS?

Let's assume that a sequel of Star Trek 09 continues in the same parallel universe/quantum reality (hey, I don't want to read anything about reset buttons or the non-acceptance of canon violations)...
Should the new old crew of the new old U.S.S. Enterprise embark on completely new missions (if yes, which ones?) or should any new adventure at least be inspired by/give a nod to some or other TOS episode (if yes, which ones?)?

"The Trouble with Tribbles" of course should be next

If it's not a remake of Spock's brain I'm out!

It's really hard to say... the only TOS episodes that would probably work with today's audiences would be ones like Balance of Terror or The Doomsday Machine. Simple ideas, classic good versus evil situations. The Enterprise Incident might also work, with Mission: Impossible-like action sequences as Kirk finds his way through the Romulan flagship. Arena could be good too, if they don't screw up the CG gorn like they did in Enterprise.

Personally, I would love to see nuTrek versions of The Amok Time, A Taste of Armageddon, or The Tholian Web. But, somehow, I don't think modern audiences could keep up with the thought behind these stories, and I surely wouldn't want to see them dumbed down.

It should have lotsa Klingons in it, and Ricky Gervais as Harry Mudd.

Re: Should 'Star Trek XII'/'Star Trek 2012' at least be inspired by TO

they should stay far away from TOS eps and fill in the blanks that TOS left behind.

However, let's not forget that the post-'Star Trek XI' quantum reality is different in some aspects compared to TOS, with Nero having caused quite an amount of damage in the past.
Some things we might consider as canon in the prime timeline might not have happened/might have happened differently in this particular, Nero-created quantum reality, the nuTrek timeline. For example, TOS episodes with direct connections to Kirk's earlier life cannot and will not turn out the same... 'Where no Man...' (can Kirk and Mitchell still have met at the Academy?), 'The Conscience of the King', 'Obsession' or 'Court Martial' immediately come to my mind.
Still, 'Doomsday Machine', 'The Tholian Web' or 'Balance of Terror' indeed would still work today (even if they are too short for a feature film as such, no matter how much you embellish them).

Talking about fanboism...
How about a remake of 'Elaan of Troiyus'? How about 'Who mourns for Adonais' (now that's cringe-worthy)? Or how about 'Space Seed' to set the scene for a remake of 'The Wrath of Khan' in a couple of decades?
I only hope any sequels honour William Ware Theiss and his titillation theory (hey, the gave Uhura her minidress back)... :techman:

We could also pick up some of ENT's better ideas... :rommie:

The Andorians and the Aenar, for example, or former Federation President Archer (think Gerald Ford) - with Porthos VIII (think 'The Simpsons' Snowball) in tow - telling everybody about the good old days, or an elderly T'Pol having a pep talk with Spock over a bowl of Plomeek soup or 'Whatever happened to the Suliban?'...

Yes new missions. I don't know 'which ones', that's up to the writers to figure out but based on the characters young ages, sequels should be set fairly soon after XI and be equally huge in scope and production as XI.

That is a hugh order, isn't it? What tale could be worthy of a big screen treatment set right after this? I don't have any idea. A story about everyone recovering from events of XI, perhaps covering the political implications and fallout? Eh. A story prepping for a 5 year mission? Eh. A story set between two TOS episodes? Eh. A complete rehashing of a TOS episode? Eh.

Another new villain? An alien probe visits Earth looking for its kin; the Dodos? The Borg attack?

It all lacks drama. The only thing I can say for sure is real peril must always be at the heart of this new timelines big screen outings otherwise it slips back into the same mediocre trappings of old. I don't envy them their task of coming up with something fresh.

"Mirror, Mirror".

Yeah, fanwank.

Admit it! You only want to see Zoe Saldana in this tiny little Mirror Uhura outfit!

The untold billions to be made by putting Zoe Saldana in a Mirror Universe Uhura uniform are simply out there, waiting to be taken by the clever producer with the right pirate brain.

Combine Zoe Saldana in a Mirror Universe uniform with a Tantalus Field and Hoshi Sato's (mirror) cunning and lust for power and you have the makings of an entire spinoff movie series.

They should never ever make a sequel. They should make a new movie with the same characters. If they do remakes or direct sequels, then we're back to an audience that narrows with each picture.

Id rather they dont base anything off of the TOS episodes. Whats the point of having ab rand spankin' new movie series if we just get the same old stories. There are plenty of adventures to be had in space, lets see them tackle some new ones.

Re: Should 'Star Trek XII'/'Star Trek 2012' at least be inspired by TO

I think think there is enough room to do new episodes within Kirk's first five year mission without having to redo any old episodes.

My thoughts exactly!
Whatever comes next, it has to be huge (just try to beat the avalanche of images and the emotional impact of the last trailer), fresh, yet somehow familiar and fitting to the preconceptions people have about Trek... but then again, with the right people at the helm (that means to keep all the Bermans, Bragas and their cronies as far away from it as possible), Star Trek can indeed be the new Star Wars (it has to be - just look at The Clone Wars)! :techman:

Right you are!
They should avoid doing direct sequels (although they more or less pulled it off with 'The Wrath of Khan', 'The Search for Spock' and 'The Voyage Home') , but instead do a loosely connected series of movies. :techman:
