The H in McCoy's name

^ He joined Starfleet not to handle a divorce, but to escape the family's wrath after he lost the family heirloom sunglasses.

LOL.

Could also be one of these:

Leonard Hospital McCoy - dad always knew Lenny would be a doctor. Didn't help him any, but Lenny got to see stars.

Leonard Hulk McCoy - A name taken on by Leonard during his college days as he paid his way through school doing wrestling bouts. "300 credits to anyone who can last a full round with Hulk McCoy!" He paid out more than he won, so he retired from the ring.

Leonard "Happy" McCoy - his nickname before "Bones."

Yeah, I know these are all lame, but I wanted to make up for being the only person geeky enough to post up top: "waaah, it was only in the moooveez not the seeereez!" instead of having fun with it. :-)

I always thought it was Horatio. I guess that's just from the novels though.

I don't know the years of the novels you mention. I do know that ST III (with its "McCoy, Leonard H.") was released in June, 1984 and that Geoffrey Mandel's U.S.S. Enterprise Officer's Manual was first printed in January, 1980...

... so something fannish may(?) be going on here (though the Officer's Manual has "Itaka" as Sulu's first name and "Upenda" as Uhura's).

The Ultimate Irony:
A McCoy with the middle name...HATFIELD!!!

Niiice! :)
