"What if" DS9 Ro Laren instead of Kira

RaymondJames

The tilte says it all aldies and gentlemen, suppose that Kira Nerys was never on DS9. Commander Sisko comes to DS9 and on the show you have:

Sisko
Jake Sisko
Quark
Odo
O'Brien
Nog
Rom
Bashir
&
Ro Laren
(Worf comes later)

How do you think her character would have been on Ds9. If she had never left starfleet and was assigned to Ds9 and served during the war. please do discuss.

Yes, that was the original idea for the show. When the actress wouldn't commit, the Kira character was created to replace her.

With a Starfleet-trained character in the liason position, I'm not sure there'd have been quite as much of a tendency to emphasize Bajoran politics, and I imagine the Odo romance thing would had to have happened very differently, if at all.

As well as Ro was part of the original idea weren't they going to be planet bound as well...think I remember reading that in the Making of Star Trek Deep Space Nine book. I think that using Ro as the first officer and Kira character would have been interesting since Ro seemed to be conflicted somewhat of her Bajoran heritage. The series would have been dramatically different either way I think.

I wonder how far they got in developing the DS9 concept for Ro. I heard they were pretty pissed that she wouldn't commit, and that they had been stupid enough to go ahead and begin developing the show for Ro with out first consulting with the actress.

That actress has a history of keeping herself free for movie and film roles. I think they offered her a main character role on Battlestar after her apearance, but she politely declined.

I would have loved it. Ro was a little more sulking and pensive that Kira. Kira S6-S7 was at her best, a lot less bitchy and a little more willing to do what had to be done.

Problem was Ro's Maquis ties reconciled back to working for SF

I think it would have been interesting if Ro had been ex-starfleet and a Militia officer. More friction with Sisko while also understanding why Starfleet works the way it does...

I like Ro's character better. Things would have been way different on DS9 if they did not have Kira and had Ro instead. Chances are she would have only been a Lieutenant, Lt JG or even just an Ensign. Ro unlike Kira never appeared to be religious thus the whole Sisko and Bajor prophets arc may have never happened. A Romance between Odo and Ro would have never happened, it not logical. She would have saw Odo as a enemy, he worked with the Cardassians. If Worf would to have come over I think there could have been sexual sparks between Ro and Worf. If not they could have both been good friends. I would assume Ro would transfer into Security or Tactical division. She would have been very anti-social with Sisko.

Except that Ro would never have gone to The Maquis, as they didn't exist until DS9 started.

Could still have been an interesting dynamic though.

The Maquis roots can be traced back to the Cardassian Wars in the 2350s granted majorly the actual Maquis we know were more or less started in 2370.

Well, I guess we would have been treated to the on-screen backstory of how Ro came to the Maquis, which might have been interesting.

But personally, I'm glad we got Kira instead. I was never that fond of the Ro character on TNG.

I would have liked to have seen Kira and Ro on together. I'd like to see Kira's reaction to a non-religious Bajoran. They have a pretty interesting chemistry in the books.

I preferred Kira on DS9, watching her struggles, her development... I dunno, I liked Ro on TNG, and her escapades, and I like her in the DS9R- the time feels better for her.

I liked Ro and it would have been interesting to have her in DS9, but Nana Visitor is a definite asset to DS9 so I'm glad things worked out how they did.

I think it would have lessened the conflict to have Ro instead of Kira. By the time DS9 started, Ro was about a year into her stint on the Enterprise-D, and by that point she seemed to assimilate herself more into Starfleet Ways (which was , of course, before she joined the Maquis in "Preemptive Strike"). That, I don't think, would have allowed for the character dynamics that we got with Kira, not being Starfleet, so to speak.

Not coming from the Federation, Kira could do some of things she did, such as go over Sisko's head after disagreeing with him over his command of the station. Ro was a bit to "seasoned" by that point.

Additionally, having Kira around gave us an insight to the occupation.

I actually think it would have been interesting to have Ro appear on DS9 with Kira. Imagine Kira's anger at Ro fleeing to Starfleet instead of being in the Bajoran underground.

I liked Kira as the way it is. So I wouldn't want to change her for anything, even though I did like Ro as well. :)

I really like to think about the path not taken and this is a good one to ponder. I have to admit, I liked the Ro character and Michelle Forbes portrayal of said character but she fit more into the plasticine word of TNG. DN9 however was a show that had more inherrient conflict and the Kira character fit really well in that kind of environment, that and Nana Visitor is a pretty damn good actor.

word to this!!

i've seen bits of Ro's appearances in TNG and...eh. she was okay but she did nothing for me at all. whereas i LOVE Kira's fire and inner and outer conflicts. :)
