"What if" DS9 Ro Laren instead of Kira

How about if they had Ro as originally intended and then in or around season three she defects to the Maquis (she could have been the "Eddington" type character). She then becomes a recurring character/villain. Then Kira joins the cast as the new replacement first officer.

That's a neat idea ... except I would have missed Kira for those seasons.

The other aspect to be considered if Ro was there from the start is how would she and Sisko react in relation to Picard at the start?

Also what would Ro's reaction be to Worf from Way of the Warrior on?

In the "Worlds of Trek" pro-lit book "Ferenginar" where Ro is the Chief Of Security, Ro is mildly romantically linked to Quark.

Didn't a lot of DS9 plots involving Kira derive from the fact that she had been in the resistance since she was a teenager? A lot of things would have had to be changed around. I liked the Ro character but I like the Kira character also and find it difficult to imagine what it would be like with Ro instead of Kira because I think it would be a lot different.

How about a Ro from the Mirror universe? That could be funny.

I would have been a full supporter of Ro vs Kira on DS9 in the beginning. In fact I was. I was a huge fan of Ro on Next Generation and when I heard that she'd turned down DS9 and that Kira had then been created I resented the character. Only thing is she was written so well that she (Kira) quickly became my favorite Trek character. In the end, I think this was the best way to go, because now we have both Kira & Ro on the station in the post series novels, and the characters can co-exist on the station without having to pick one over the other.

I didn't like Kira to begin with, but she grew on me - to the extent that my daughter is partially named after her!

Ro, on the other hand, I never liked. I've known people like her - bad attitude that they won't really ever give up for long. And I don't think it's just the character, I think it's Forbes. I've yet to see her play a character that wasn't like that. I'm glad she wasn't on DS9 instead of Kira, and I was glad when they got rid of her on nuBSG.

I loved Kira/Nana... but if it would have spared us some of those insufferable Bajoran political/religious episodes I would gladly make the switch.
