Why the Corvette Actually Makes Sense (SEE: TWOK)

Where's Kirk's antiques during TOS? I only saw two sculptures and a painting in his quarters in TOS...

Most of his antiques were in his home as seen in TWOK.
Think about it though: Would you take your most precious antiques onto the Enterprise?

Here's something that's bothering me. How does a 300 year-old car outrun an advanced state of the art police hoverbike? Wouldn't that be like a horse and buggy outrunning a modern-day motorcycle?

From what we know, that whole sequence seems stupid to me. Don't waste your time trying to make sense of it. Hopefully, the rest of the movie will make up for it.

The same way people on foot seem to outrun horses, cars and trains in just about every other movie.

or

The cop is holding back because he knows there's a kid in there and doesn't want to get in front of the car, scare the kid and have it lose control of the car and crash.
Sure, Jimbo throws it off the cliff but the cop couldn't have guessed what a little shit he was.
Maybe he thought Jimmy would inevitably stop at the end of the road.

Since TWoK portrayed Kirk as being into antiquities, it really doesn't matter what we saw in TOS.

Most of the movies and TV shows that came after TOS were not overtly and completely consistent with TOS -- and they downright changed many things also.

Having said that, I agree with those who said that just because we weren't TOLD about Kirk's love of antiquities in TOS doesn't preclude him from being that way -- it could be that Kirk just never had a reason to bring it up.

It was shown on at least a couple of occasions that Kirk had a familiarity with historical figures and events. The presence of Abraham Lincoln in "The Savage Curtain" and the Old West setting of "Spectre of the Gun" are both supposed to have resulted from scans of Kirk's mind. His ability to spot the ingredients for making gunpowder in "Arena" is only one of several indications that he had some knowledge of older technologies, as well. I don't find it any great leap to go from these to a fascination on his part with 20th-century Corvettes or Commodore PET computers.

Is that the explanation we'll get? I don't know, and it isn't really all that important that we get an explanation at all, but it wouldn't be coming completely out of left field if that's the way it turned out.
