90s music flashback. Who remembers...

More eclectic selections from the 90s:

"At The River" - Groove Armada. This WAS the song of the summer of 1999 for me. But this was not just summer... this was a beautiful summer full of adventure, passion, sun, and things that happened. :adore:

"Justified and Ancient (Stand By The JAMMs)" - KLF. We lost Tammy Wynette in the 90s. :( A real shame, this 1991 smash hit was without doubt her finest hour.

"A Design For Life" - Manic Street Preachers. The "Unchained Melody" of Britpop. :bolian: [No it wasn't. It was a satire of the stereotypical perceptions of the working classes, which ironically went over the heads of all the Oasisites and Blurrians of the general public who mistook it as a drinking anthem - everyone]
Oh. :alienblush: Still... [ - everyone]

"Free As A Bird" - The Beatles. No idea what these people thought they were doing in the 90s. Riding on the coat-tails of the Oasis phenomenon, methinks. ;) ;) ;)

"Strawberry Fields Forever" - Candy Flip. OK, now this is getting ridiculous. :p No, but seriously, I did like and do applaud this late-Madchester attempt at taking on the mighty Lennon, even if it does sound rather tame in comparison in hindsight.

"Liberation" - Pet Shop Boys - not their best song, but my personal favourite PSB song from the 90s (a time when they became more flamboyant in their fashions). I first heard this ballad roughly the same time I bought Elite 2 for my computer, and I always imagined the song in the background as I soared through the beautiful (back then) computer-generated cosmos. :luvlove: [Flying through a computer simulation of complete emptiness is your idea of a romantic time? No wonder you haven't got a girlfriend - everyone]

I was just about to mention Bittersweet Symphony, because for some inexplicable reason they have been playing it on the radio a lot lately.

Awesome thread. Always good to go back to a great decade of music.

There were two songs that defined the 90s for me:

Green Day - Good Riddence (Time of Your Life) - I still like it even though it was the ultimate clipshow song and overplayed.

Alanis Morissette - Ironic

Combining two 90s phenomenons into one rave anthem: "Go" - Moby

I can't believe we've talked about the 90s without mentioning this iconic britpop hit: "Common People" - Pulp :bolian: (one of my all time favourite songs)

Speaking of the Chemcial Brothers, one of my favourite videos of theirs (by Michel Gondry, who also made "Around The World" and "Music Sounds Better..." above): "Let Forever Be" :D

As well as Gondry, Spike Jonze made some great music videos too:
"Praise You" - FatBoy Slim :vulcan:
"Buddy Holly" - Weezer :rommie:
"Sabotage" - Beastie Boys :guffaw:

And arguably the funniest dance anthem of the 90s: "Born Slippy" - Underworld

"Justified and Ancient (Stand By The JAMMs)" - KLF. We lost Tammy Wynette in the 90s. :( A real shame, this 1991 smash hit was without doubt her finest hour.

I absolutely LOVED this song. At Good Will a few weeks ago, I found the CD single and HAD to buy it. My wife rolled her eyes but I stand by my decision. It was interesting to finally hear the original version as I had it on an old VHS tape recorded from all places the one time that The Nashville Network played it. I also really liked the KLF's "3AM Eternal".

Other 90's songs that I liked:

Keedy - Save Some Love

LA Guns - The Ballad of Jayne

Nikki French - Total Eclipse of the Heart

Information Society - Think

Patty Smyth with Don Henley - Sometimes Love Just Ain't Enough

Dionne Farris - I Know

Jocelyn Enriquez - Do You Miss Me

Spin Doctors - Two Princes

Timmy T - One More Try

Stevie B - Because I Love You (The Postman Song)

Kyper - Tic Tac Toe

Linear - Sending All My Love

Jann Arden - Insenstive

Black Box - Strike It Up

Cathy Dennis - Too Many Walls or C'Mon and Get My Lovew/D-Mob

2Nu - This Is Ponderous (not the real video but my friends and I used to LOVE this song!)

Monie Love - It's A Shame (My Sister)

Another Bad Creation - Iesha

Nia Peeples - Street of Dreams(no video but great dance song from the 90s)

After 7 - Can't Stop

This thread has been very therapeutic today. I had the worst day at work yesterday and took the day off to relax and revisiting some of these songs has been awesome.

I liked the Extreme Noise Terror version of "3am Eternal". :klingon: :rommie:

Between this and the 80s music thread a few weeks back, life has been good. :D

Dare we start a '00s music retrospective thread soon?

It was number one for the entire 520 weeks of the decade I believe

Bryan Adams- Everything I Do (I Do It For You)
For some reason, I still love that song. It's stood the test of time better than bloody "My Heart Will Go On..." - now THAT was a song considerably more painful than tearing you own heart out with a spoon... :bolian:

Well, it MAY have been closer to 17 weeks than it was to 520...
All I know is that it was one week longer than "Love Is All Around" and a few weeks longer than that Whitney Houston one (which I believe was actually Christmas #1... :scream:).

But still, the movie was quite hilarious.

I love it too, I even prefer the album version with the extra 2 and a half minutes on the end :D
They used to play the full version on Radio 2 back in the day. It was a nice surprise. :)

Classical music, in fact, makes your entire self-appointed connoisseur-of-music position completely moot. Because the music you no doubt like will be just as forgotten 100 years from now as will be Black Hole Sun.

It will be as if they never happened.

But I promise you....Mozart and Beethoven and Chopin and Brahms will still be around.
I'm not so sure about this. Not whether or not they'll be around, but whether or not they might have some numbers added to their ranks from our time period. Composers like Bernie Taupin, Freddie Mercury, Diane Warren, and Prince.

I hope your right about Black Hole Sun being forgotten, though. That song, and especially the video, freak me right the hell out! Like the waking up later that night with night terrors and chest pains kind of freaked out.
I always wondered if the sample used in that song was Mr. Spock himself...
You probably know this already, but Mr. Spock, Dr. McCoy, and Nomad are all in "Pure Energy" by Information Society. I think that was from '89, though.

And when they used to play Heart and Soul by T'Pau on the radio, they'd lead in with clips from McCoy, Kirk, and T'Pau (from "Amok Time"). But that's even further back - '87.
