Final Crisis #6 and Batman

Ultimale

Lieutenant
Red Shirt
Okay, so I didn't see a thread for this, though maybe it was buried somewhere. I read this the other day after being spoiled re: the ending on a comic book forum. It's not like I didn't know it was coming, but it was still quite a shocker. Without getting spoilery, there's a very definite end to Bruce Wayne's Batman here, and I have to say, it seemed to me that his story is finished. At least for me. There's all this "Battle for the Cowl" crap coming up and then a new Batman and Robin, but no matter what they do with this, it's still already been done. One cat on another message board said that he felt a nice sense of closure for Bruce here, and I admit that's one of the few successes of FC so far. So after Gaiman's "Whatever Happened to the Caped Crusader?," I'm dropping the titles. Should Bruce return, great, but I have a feeling death in comics is maybe getting more respect in light of the fact that Steve Rogers still isn't back. Did anyone else read this? And what did you think?

It's just a set up for the Black Lantern Corps. Bruce'll be back once that runs it course. No question about it.

For the love of God, Darkseid himself all but tells you he's not dead. Read over exactly how he describes his eye beams. "Can you outrace the Omega Sanctum? THE LIFE THAT IS DEATH!"

The Omega Sanctum isn't death. It's trapping the person inside their own mind.

And if there's one person who can beat that, it's Batman.

Look at Batman R.I.P. The Black Glove broke his mind, and he rebooted himself with the Batman of Zur-En-Arrh personality. If there's a human being with complete mastery over his mind, it's Batman. He beat the Black Glove. He beat the Lump. He'll beat Darkseid's Omega Sanctum.

Batman thinks of everything.

If the Omega Beams were just supposed to put him in an alternate reality, why did it leave Bruce a smoking mummified corpse?

Even if the Beams didn't zap him somewhere else, why did they leave a corpse? Before they've always resulted in total disintegration. (Though Darkseid can reintegrate at will, like he did with Desaad in "Even Gods Must Die!")

Well, there is a little bit of time in between Bruce/Batman getting zapped and Superman showing up with a smoldering corpse in a Batman costume. Who's to say this whole thing isn't another fake-out, part of a Bat-plan, and the body in Superman's arms isn't Bruce Wayne at all?

(Full disclosure time: although I work at DC Comics, I'm as in the dark as the rest of you - I don't know anything about upcoming plans for the Batman, but I can't imagine Bruce will be gone for long.)

^^ Neat job! What do you do there? ... Superman was flying around in a mad rage blasting the city with his heat vision, though. I never thought of him as that good an actor ;)

I think it's one of the Flashes (specifically Wally West) Superman is holding. The corpse looks a lot like Barry Allen's corpse in Crisis on Infinite Earths, and Barry told Wally that they were going to have to outrun the Black Racer. Even though Wally has beaten the Black Racer before, what if Wally got tagged by the Black Racer this time?

Oh please - it's DC's leading IPR - why is anyone discussing this "death" with a straight face? I'll be amazed if it lasts three months.

Personally it annoys me that from everything I'm hearing it sounds like Morrison only did his run on Batman so he can kill him.

Bruce will be back...he won't be gone for long. He could be trapped in a coma fighting his way through the Omega Sanctum if he's trapped in alternate timelines. Or they will resurrect him with the Black Lantens. Nightwing will take up the mantle of the Bat which is my preference and then Bruce will take it back in a year or so.

Bats ain't dead.
Steve Rogers will be back.
Hell, Barry Allen, THE character who was supposed to stay dead...who was the exception to the rule, has come back for good.

Some people take PR stunts to seriously.

Everything you heard is wrong - Morrison can pick and choice his titles - why would he spend years writing Batman comics and then plan to return to the character later this year if he has such a banal motivation?

You mean he's coming back?! Fuck. Why can't he stick to all those deviant little Vertigo books no one reads and leave my favorite characters alone.
