First Action Figure image released

It may or may not be a flame, but as a general statement, you'll get no argument here; I can't stand net slang. I'm not a big fan of purposely misspelling words when it so often happens naturally all by itself. In fact, whenever I see "teh", I just stop reading right then and there.

lol qft ftw you totally pwned the internets!!

TEH internets, thank you very much.

Keep up. :p

I doubt it, considering that it's a professional photo shoot, but they're only paid to take the shots.

If they're given a pile of deformed crap to work with, you can bet they'll hand you the most gorgeous, well-lit photos of deformed shitpiles you've ever laid your eyes on.

Besides, given how poor the quality of this thing is, maybe they just fucked up the mold to begin with and no one noticed?

The second wave was already sculpted: including Worf, Romulan Praetor, Reman(?) and B-4. The unpainted prototype of the Romulan Praetor was sold off on eBay about a year ago. But because there was no interest in the movie, there was no interest in the first wave of NEM figures.

Had AA gone with a smaller scale (IE - 3 3/4"), they'd have been able to offer more figures in that first wave. There was enough interest from retailers to get one wave into stores. The reason it didn't sell well was because they were putting their limited resources into characters no one knew and a line of Borg figures no one asked for. Nemesis was a pretty toyetic movie with Picard's dune buggy and the Romulan fighter, but thanks to AA's large scale, it wasn't feasible. Why they never offered role play items is beyond me.

Unlike what AA offered, Playmates is offering figures in a couple scales, two of the most popular. They're not bucking the trends. They're offering a wide selection of characters as well as playsets and role play toys. While their execution might be wanting, their business model is far more ambitious.

Not that it's a deal breaker for my enjoyment of the film, but it is just one more reason why I wasn't impressed with putting a gajillion deltas on the shirt in the first place. It wasn't necessary in Superman Returns, and it isn't necessary here.

FYI: Diamond Select Toys and Toys R'Us have made a deal to sell DST product in their stores, so you should be able to find AA's Trek stuff at TRUs soon. I forget the date for this.

Actually, they've been available at Toys R Us for nearly a year now. In fact, I think it was sometime last year I bought some of DST's DS9 and BSG action figures at Toys R Us.

Hmm, I might be late to the game on this, but did the picture on the link in the OP always have "Final version may vary from what is shown here" on it? I just noticed it now, and could have sworn it didn't have anything like that on it originally.

I guess they wanted to make sure people knew it was just a prototype, and not the actual final toy. Hopefully the final one won't be quite so bad.

No, I'm quite sure it didn't have that before. It's been added since this thread first went up.

Edit:

It originally appeared as seen in NiteTrek's post here.

They always say that; And then they end up looking worse when they come out.

Ha ha. No, it did not have a disclaimer before. Looks like either TNI or Playmates are reading my "this doll sucks" thread. I'm so flattered.

I wonder what kind of major retool this thing could go through in order to not look like Hayden Christensen in a wool sweater.

I'm not sure, but it would probably involve a disposable Bic lighter and some fifty grade sandpaper.

They were showing prototypes at LAST YEAR'S Toy Fair in February. They'll be showing final packaged product this year.

Considering these toys were tooled and ready to go long before the original Christmas 2008 release date, I doubt the end product will look any different than what we've seen.

It wasn't necessary in Superman Returns, and it isn't necessary here.

Filmmakers realized - what, ten or twelve years ago? - that brightly-colored superhero outfits suck on the big screen.

No two ways about it. They're awful.

Now, "Iron Man" has that super-shiny sports car look going for him - it's armor, that works.

Batman - well, they went for monochrome blacks and dark greys and they break the surface up like, well like armor.

"X-Men" - black leather with color accents. Problem solved.

It was the "Spider-Man" folks who decided to try to keep the classic comic-book costume by imposing a computer-generated shadow pattern on the bright red areas of his outfit, to give it some texture.

That was so successful that the "Superman" designers of course followed suit.

Now, where "Star Trek" is concerned I'd have preferred that they just darkened and broke up the big bright comic-book shirts into designs that look a little more like uniforms while keeping a few bright contrast panels. But they clearly wanted to be more faithful to TOS than that, so the obvious (tested and successful) solution was to do the Spider-Man/Superman thing.

And the result looks great in the movie, so who cares what they do with the toys? They'll get that right eventually.

It does look like Pine.

I like the phaser but the shirt looks ghastly. Someone upthread who commented on it being knitting by his grandma had it correct.

I guess other than the sweater, it's fine.

I thought so too. So many disagree though.

I'm still thinking this is a prototype, and the effect will be toned down for the 6" figures and non-existent for the 3.75".

I'd just like to say that I haven't been in the Trek XI forum for a while and it's nice to see a thread where somebody complained about something ( albeit an action figure) and we didn't have someone else come along and knock down the straw-man anti-Trek XI with "OMG CANNON CANNON !!!!111 IT"S NOT STAR TREKKZ!!" or whatever people think the people that have gripes with the movie say.
