First Action Figure image released

Even mass marketed and marketed to the masses, I smell peg warmers. The Scotty figure will be especially ironic.

I don't buy the 'mass market' reason why this should look so poor. If you put the same time and quality into these that AA/DST does, and sell them at Wal-Mart at $12-15, that they would not sell well? I'm not a toy market expert, but it seems to me that the kids are going to buy the 3 3/4" figures and the collectors are going to buy the 6", if they have the look of the actors. In my area, the smaller Dark Knight figures seem to set all summer, but the larger more movie accurate based figures flew off the shelf. Hell, I never even saw the Joker in that size.

FYI: Diamond Select Toys and Toys R'Us have made a deal to sell DST product in their stores, so you should be able to find AA's Trek stuff at TRUs soon. I forget the date for this.

I'm not sure where you got that anyone said anything like what you are implying. I certainly never said that "less than stellar figures will sell more." I was discussing company vs. company in regards to the "AA/DST should have got the license." Of course, nothing precludes them from having anything to do in the future either.

That's a start, but they should have made that deal before the papers were signed well over a year ago.

Kirk's boots remind me of HITLER.

There, I did it.

Seriously though, these are cheap, mass-produced, lead-painted toys aimed at innocent little kids who will most likely not be putting this in a display case.

Art Asylum would have totally fucked up this line.

The figures might have looked better but if the way they handled Nemesis was any indication, you'd only have four characters on the pegs and in a scale incompatible with most of what's out there. No 3 3/4" figures, no vehicles, and no role play toys for a movie tie in.

Art Asylum had a chance and they blew it. CBS went with the manufacturer with the better track record when it comes to character breadth, product depth, and mass market distribution.

Of course we could have had the best of both worlds if DST hadn't bought AA. Back in the day, when AA was a studio-for-hire, they did sculpting chores for Playmates.

I might have combined two different exchanges I have had with different people in my little 'rant' here. And, of course, I realize that Playmates is a larger company with better means to get the figures out. I just wish they put out better product. But, hey like has been said, this is one picture of one figure that we know little about. they could be really good in person, I'm hoping they are.

If you overprice toys relative to the competition then no, they will not sell well. Quality as you perceive it costs more and sells to a smaller group of folks willing to pay more. This is clearly not what the license holders are interested in. They want to sell lots of toys.

What will sell as toys is different from what will sell as "collector's replicas." We've already had a look at the "Star Trek Barbies" and they're pretty much aimed at the Barbie market (which does include some collectors - but they're interested in these things fitting into the "Barbie" line, not accurately representing the characters in the movie).

I don't spend money on "action figures" of any kind. I do buy toys for younger relatives, though. :)

Addendum: Misspelling "cool" as "kewl/kewlness" etc. as a means of being dismissive passed its sell-by date years ago. It just looks a little tragic and out of touch now.

The second wave was already sculpted: including Worf, Romulan Praetor, Reman(?) and B-4. The unpainted prototype of the Romulan Praetor was sold off on eBay about a year ago. But because there was no interest in the movie, there was no interest in the first wave of NEM figures.

Is there anyone out there who is fooled by this? Anyone who doesn't recognize that this is a flame, but one implemented with Dennis' patented "how to game the BBS rules" style?

Next time, Dennis, don't pretend to be subtle. You're not fooling anybody... and the handful of "moderators" who seem to let you get away with anything you do may eventually have to start pretending to apply the rules to you, too.

FYI... "kewlness" (the term used ONLY by me here, and thus making it entirely clear that Dennis' snide little comment was directed at me... and it was a flame, nothing more or less) is a term used to denigrate the attitude that many of us see being implemented in this film. The attitude that "change is good just for the fact that it's change." The term communicates the idea very clearly, thank you very much, Dennis. You, personally, may not LIKE it, but honestly, your opinion on the topic is really critically important to only one person... yourself.

I'll use whatever language I like, in other words, Dennis, and if you want to use one of your "standard operating procedure" underhanded flames in an effort to justify your own position... you're welcome to, but I'd hope that the moderators would actually enforce the rules against personal attacks equitably.

So saying the use of a term is out of touch flames the poster now? Even though it's adressing the post, not the poster, as per board rules?

Just for fun, I ran a search on "kewlness" and 20 most recent posters to use that word in their posts have been you, Dennis, you again, Aragorn, Dorian Thompson, nx1701g, DS9Sega, Irishman, Tom Servo, Kpnuts, Scout101, Praetor, Valeris, FalTorPan, Ronald Held, you again, ancient, Franklin, RAMA, Brutal Strudel, RookieBatman, you and UnknownSample. How this is "ONLY" you needs some explaining.

It may or may not be a flame, but as a general statement, you'll get no argument here; I can't stand net slang. I'm not a big fan of purposely misspelling words when it so often happens naturally all by itself. In fact, whenever I see "teh", I just stop reading right then and there. I'm also not a fan of adding to the derailment of a thread. So, uh, Sorry. Yeah, that Kirk figure sure does suck.

Personally, I find the new toy to be pretty kwel. Also, it's teh awesum.

If I was 5 years old, I'd be all over it.

Not a flame, Cary. Sorry.

And you cannot attribute that characterization to it based on whether or not it is 'out of date'. 'Out of date' is relative in any event - where you live, where you post, who you hang out with all play a part in the determination of what is and isn't out of date for an INDIVIDUAL.

And seriously...I really don't imagine a bunch of Star Trek fans to be the arbiters of fashion in any event.

Do you?

It's a pretty damned simple explanation.

Open THIS THREAD.

Search for the term, using your browser's search function.

The first time you see it used is when I use it.

The second time you see it used is when Dennis makes his (typical) snide comment.

Thus, there is ZERO question that this comment is directed at me. In his standard, "game the rules" style...

His post is just a "cute" way of saying "Cary, you are tragic and out of touch."

You know it as well as I do.

Now, I don't really care about getting called named by Dennis. But I find it REPREHENSIBLE that his "game the system" approach always gets a pass by the folks like PKTrekGirl and M'Sharak... who are both quite willing to smack down other folks without hesitation.

i didn't know you owned the patent on the word "kewl."

That being said, its use is pretty outdated, and its use is frequently petty and demeaning in context. No insult, just a known fact around teh interwebs.

Your persecution complex is strictly your own. No one is going out of their way to insult you, but by all means, if it rocks your sock, have at it.

Considering how badly they botched the uniform and Pine's face, perhaps the phaser isn't quite as bad as it looks. I'm not hopeful, but maybe that bend isn't intentional, but the gun is just soft plastic?

(It's happened before, with many figures I've owned and played with.)
