Do you eat in bed?

When I lived at home with my parents and siblings I usually always ate on my bed. It was mostly because it was the only good place to sit in my bedroom, and I did most everything in my bedroom. We rarely ate meals together so I usually ate in my room while doing homework or watching TV.

I also ate on my bed when I was living with roommates in college. I would go to my own room to be alone, and the bed is the most comfortable place to sit.

Now that I share an apartment with my boyfriend I haven't eaten on my bed in months. We usually eat together on the living room table, sitting on the couch.

I have eaten on my bed plenty of times in the old smaller appartment where I had my bed by my computer in the livingroom. But now that I have a bedroom I prefer eating in the kitchen and snacking at the computertable in the livingroom.

Before I got married I used to eat in bed in conjunction with reading. My bed was my wardrobe, library and at times pantry. There were books, clothes, magazines, cats and the occasional plate piled up on my bed. It was like an oasis island in a house of other-people's-life.

Recently Mr. Teacake was working all night and when he went to bed in the morning I could hear him saying "what's this? and this? and this?" One night and already the bed had become my personal vault: 2 books, clothes and 1 kilo of Maltersers in a plastic bag all on his side of the bed.

I don't eat in bed, but I usually have a meal a day in front of the computer. I so frequently eat here that the chair looks pretty strange and suggestive, if you know what I mean! :rommie:

I am eating in bed at this very moment. Though I am being very naughty. I'm trying to break my habits of doing other things in bed besides sleeping -- it's supposed to help with my insomnia.

I was once told, if you can't sleep, then get out of bed and sit somewhere really uncomfortable, like on a hard surface, on something angular, or raised high enough off the ground that your feet don't touch the floor. Then force yourself to sit there for 10 minutes without standing up. Watch the clock. Make sure it is ten minutes and not a second sooner. After that you're supposed to be able to fall asleep.

As I don't suffer with insomnia I've never tried it. But it might work for you :)

Thanks for the suggestion, but I've been struggling with severe insomnia for more than ten years (since I was about 12); I've tried just about everything. If I get out of bed, I'll stay out of bed. I've gone more than 7 days straight without sleep, and on an average night it takes me 2-3 hours of tossing and turning before I get anywhere near dozing off. I've tried just about every little trick. What's really starting to work -- if only a little so far, is a combination of a half-dozen rigorous sleep hygiene rules and medication. I think it'd really help if my writing/illustration took off and I could make my own hours; my body just seems to be made for going to bed at 4am and waking up at 1pm.

No wonder I have insomnia-- I do everything in bed. :rommie:
Same with me! At least before adopting my sleep hygiene rules. Actually, I think the No Hanging Out in Bed rule has had the greatest effect on my insomnia. Once I stopped hanging out in bed, my sleeping almost instantly became better -- I'd fall asleep within 30 minutes to an hour after going to bed, as opposed to 2-4 hours.
The negative side-effect of hanging out in the living room though, was that my room became a huge mess! I can't bare being in a messy room, so when I hung out in bed my room was always clean. But my roommates just bought a Wii, and while I love playing Rock Band with them, or bouncing around on the Wii Fit, I am not fond of the gory slasher horror games they constantly play, so I've lately retreated back into my room and back into my bed. What I really need is a comfy chair and a desk.

Heck no! I hate crumbs in my bed. Every night I "sweep" out my bed just to make sure there are no crumbs or any other matter in it. I cant stand the feel of something hard against my skin.

When I eat in my bedroom I do it on the floor at the foot of the bed. I will drink water while I am in bed, though, but that is it.

Maybe I should try the No Hanging Out rule-- although it would involve breaking the habits of a lifetime-- but my problem isn't falling asleep, which I can do almost instantly, it's waking up too early. :wtf:

I rarely wake in the night, and almost always I can fall asleep again immediately. Its just the getting to sleep that's hard for me. I'm guessing that the two problems have different causes, but maybe the sleep hygiene rules that are helping me may help you nonetheless.

-Go to bed and get up at the same times each day (I vary my bedtime and wake up time by only an hour to an hour and a half).

-Do nothing in bed but sleep.

-No caffeine after 2pm. Though, headstrong girl that I am, I negotiated my shrink down to 5pm, but I've also cut my caffeine consumption in half.

-Don't exercise for a few hours before bed.

-Follow a bedtime routine.

-Recognize how different foods affect your energy and don't eat sugary, or other energizing foods in the three hours before bedtime.

Those are my rules, and, cynic though I am, I have to admit they're doing wonders.

Argh. :(

-No caffeine after 2pm.
* Weeps. *

-Don't exercise for a few hours before bed.
I can probably work that into my schedule.

-Follow a bedtime routine.
? Some sort of interpretive dance or something...?

No more Frosted Brown Sugar Cinnamon Pop Tarts? :(

The cure may be worse than the disease....

^ Well, I usually just prepare my papers for the following day, do a crossword, eat a snack, and wash up for my routine, but so long as your dance is relaxing instead of invigorating, I'm sure it'll work fine.
