I NEED this book now.
Honestly, I thought "Starfleet One" sounded a bit too contemporary U.S., so I went with something else. Also, as Sci pointed out, it isn't a Starfleet ship.Is Paris One the official callsign of *any* conveyance carrying the Federation President? Or just a civilian variant (similar to Executive One, which would be a commercial airline with the US President onboard)? I ask this because the official Presidential transport in "The Chimes at Midnight" was called Starfleet One.![]()
It's implied in "Homefront" and "Paradise Lost" that Starfleet plays some role in protecting the president, though they could be the equivalent of the Marines that guard the White House whereas the Secret Service serves as the president's personal bodyguards against assassins and flying shoes. It's possible that the Federation Security references mentioned here in this thread are tied to the agent that arrested McCoy in TSFS and that it is a civilian law enforcement agency, like the Secret Service or the FBI.It established no such thing. The president's security detail were referred to consistently as guards in Articles, but they are nowhere identified as being Starfleet. The agency they work for has yet to be given a formal name.Of course, Articles also established that Starfleet Security protects the President
And a very nice drink as well.Jack Daniel's is the name of a famous brand of Tennessee whiskey that's been around for over a century.

Niiiiice.
Good to finally get an explanation for why Bacco didn't appear in Before Dishonor -- though I'm honestly surprised the Council didn't appoint a President Pro Tempore for the duration of the crisis.

The same council that sent a Diplomatic Team to a Borg cube?
(According to the sneak peek)

Hmm. I distinctly remember Articles referring to Starfleet Security being responsible for guarding the Presidential Office and the president -- in particular, I seem to recall the sequence leading up to the state dinner for the Trinni/ek establishing that they had the option of wearing their duty uniforms or the formal attire of their native words -- but I'm afraid my copy of Articles is off in another city and won't be available to me for another month. Does anyone have a copy to set my senile mind at ease?
As Christopher said, those aren't Stargate references. Jack Daniel's is a Tennessee whiskey that's been around since 1866. (It's good stuff, though I'm partial to their Single Barrel, m'self -- and Gentleman Jack, which is 12-year-old JD, is also quite fine.)Hm, McKay University and a Jack Daniel, neat. I like it!
Yup. It'll come up again several times -- music is a very important component of A Singular Destiny.Ha! KRAD, I remember when you used your blog to see if anyone remembered the word "ka'athyra", which was a previously established name for the Vulcan lute. It's kind of cool now to see what you needed the info for.
Thanks!BTW, great excerpt.
As Deano said, you're folding two bits together. There's a mention that the guards are wearing formalwear from their homeworlds for the dinner, but Esperanza's the one who's thinking she could get away with her Starfleet dress uniform so she wouldn't have to wear the archaic formalwear from Cestus III that President Bacco insists on.Hmm. The what now?the Bâtiment Vingt-Troisième Siècle
Right now, half the population on Ardana's wearing Romulan military haircuts.
That's French for "the 23rd-Century Building." "Bâtiment"="Building." "Vingt-Troisième"="23rd" ("Vingt" is 20, "Trois" is 3, and the "-ième" suffix indicates an ordinal). "Siècle"="Century."The what now?the Bâtiment Vingt-Troisième Siècle
Well... next to English, I was taught Russian. Never got the chance to learn French. That's French for "the 23rd-Century Building." "Bâtiment"="Building." This has been brought to you by my studying French throughout high school and college.![]()
I can't wait for this. Always great to see more of Bacco.
I'm sorry to see that Dax is involved though, I have had more than enough of her. I hope she has a small role.
