excerpt from A Singular Destiny

Niiiiice.

Good to finally get an explanation for why Bacco didn't appear in Before Dishonor -- though I'm honestly surprised the Council didn't appoint a President Pro Tempore for the duration of the crisis.

I have a feeling I'm going to need to put in an order at my Borders for this (why can't they still carry Trek novels?).

I just finished reading KRAD's excerpt I defintely look forward to getting this book Sonak is an interesting character.

Thanks for sharing that. Sonek seems like a really cool character. I can't wait for this to come out!

I do have one extremely minor nitpicking question though. It doesn't really count as a spoiler, so shut up. :p

Is Paris One the official callsign of *any* conveyance carrying the Federation President? Or just a civilian variant (similar to Executive One, which would be a commercial airline with the US President onboard)? I ask this because the official Presidential transport in "The Chimes at Midnight" was called Starfleet One.

Of course, The Chimes at Midnight took place both in an alternate timeline and not-quite 100 years before A Singular Destiny.

I would tend to infer that Paris One is the name of a civilian presidential transport since Articles of the Federation established no special names for Starfleet craft carrying the President. Of course, Articles also established that Starfleet Security protects the President whilst Destiny and, now, A Singular Destiny establish a civilian agency to be responsible for the President's protection, so there may be a wee little bit of retconning going on. (And, of course, we're all huge fucking nerds for looking this closely at it, but I'm comfortable with that. ;) )

Well, in Ex Machina I established a civilian Federation Security force that was implicitly responsible for protecting government officials, but no other authors seemed to pick up on it. What's the agency in DES/ASD called again?

Honestly, I thought "Starfleet One" sounded a bit too contemporary U.S., so I went with something else. Also, as Sci pointed out, it isn't a Starfleet ship. :)

It established no such thing. The president's security detail were referred to consistently as guards in Articles, but they are nowhere identified as being Starfleet. The agency they work for has yet to be given a formal name.

Hmm. I distinctly remember Articles referring to Starfleet Security being responsible for guarding the Presidential Office and the president -- in particular, I seem to recall the sequence leading up to the state dinner for the Trinni/ek establishing that they had the option of wearing their duty uniforms or the formal attire of their native words -- but I'm afraid my copy of Articles is off in another city and won't be available to me for another month. Does anyone have a copy to set my senile mind at ease?

Thank you for this nice Christmas surprise. I definitely enjoyed it! :)

I am very much looking forward to this book!

Hm, McKay University and a Jack Daniel, neat. I like it!

The latter is not a Stargate reference (at least, there's no reason to assume it is). Jack Daniel's is the name of a famous brand of Tennessee whiskey that's been around for over a century. (In fact, I've sometimes wondered if the Stargate characters might've been named after it.)

Ha! KRAD, I remember when you used your blog to see if anyone remembered the word "ka'athyra", which was a previously established name for the Vulcan lute. It's kind of cool now to see what you needed the info for.

BTW, great excerpt.
