excerpt from A Singular Destiny

Is Paris One the official callsign of *any* conveyance carrying the Federation President? Or just a civilian variant (similar to Executive One, which would be a commercial airline with the US President onboard)? I ask this because the official Presidential transport in "The Chimes at Midnight" was called Starfleet One.
Honestly, I thought "Starfleet One" sounded a bit too contemporary U.S., so I went with something else. Also, as Sci pointed out, it isn't a Starfleet ship. :)

Well, Gorkon used Qo'Nos One as his personal transport as opposed to something called Klingon Defense Force One, so there is some precedent. I guess if Paris One ran into trouble, I suppose that's why Bacco used the Venture in December of 2380. Koroleva would've gotten out and pushed if she was forced to. ;)

Of course, Articles also established that Starfleet Security protects the President
It established no such thing. The president's security detail were referred to consistently as guards in Articles, but they are nowhere identified as being Starfleet. The agency they work for has yet to be given a formal name.
It's implied in "Homefront" and "Paradise Lost" that Starfleet plays some role in protecting the president, though they could be the equivalent of the Marines that guard the White House whereas the Secret Service serves as the president's personal bodyguards against assassins and flying shoes. It's possible that the Federation Security references mentioned here in this thread are tied to the agent that arrested McCoy in TSFS and that it is a civilian law enforcement agency, like the Secret Service or the FBI.

Niiiiice.

Good to finally get an explanation for why Bacco didn't appear in Before Dishonor -- though I'm honestly surprised the Council didn't appoint a President Pro Tempore for the duration of the crisis.

The same council that sent a Diplomatic Team to a Borg cube?
(According to the sneak peek)

Fair enough, but I would have expected it to be standard procedure to appoint a PPT in the event that communications with the President are cut off.

Hmm. I distinctly remember Articles referring to Starfleet Security being responsible for guarding the Presidential Office and the president -- in particular, I seem to recall the sequence leading up to the state dinner for the Trinni/ek establishing that they had the option of wearing their duty uniforms or the formal attire of their native words -- but I'm afraid my copy of Articles is off in another city and won't be available to me for another month. Does anyone have a copy to set my senile mind at ease?

Nope, that bit has Esperenza talking about wearing the formal attire of her world, and that she could have worn her dress uniform as she's ex-Starfleet. The guards are in local formal-wear and nothing else is mentioned.

Hm, McKay University and a Jack Daniel, neat. I like it!
As Christopher said, those aren't Stargate references. Jack Daniel's is a Tennessee whiskey that's been around since 1866. (It's good stuff, though I'm partial to their Single Barrel, m'self -- and Gentleman Jack, which is 12-year-old JD, is also quite fine.)

McKay University is named after Michael McKay of the European Space Operations Centre, who is the Ground Segment Manager and Flight Operations Director for ESOC's Mars Express deep-space probe in orbit of Mars.

Ha! KRAD, I remember when you used your blog to see if anyone remembered the word "ka'athyra", which was a previously established name for the Vulcan lute. It's kind of cool now to see what you needed the info for.
Yup. It'll come up again several times -- music is a very important component of A Singular Destiny.

BTW, great excerpt.
Thanks!

As Deano said, you're folding two bits together. There's a mention that the guards are wearing formalwear from their homeworlds for the dinner, but Esperanza's the one who's thinking she could get away with her Starfleet dress uniform so she wouldn't have to wear the archaic formalwear from Cestus III that President Bacco insists on. :)

KRAD, Christoper - thank you. That was very interesting.

Being a Stargate Atlantis fan, it would have been nice but maybe I know now where THEY got some of the names from :)

the Bâtiment Vingt-Troisième Siècle
The what now?
That's French for "the 23rd-Century Building." "Bâtiment"="Building." "Vingt-Troisième"="23rd" ("Vingt" is 20, "Trois" is 3, and the "-ième" suffix indicates an ordinal). "Siècle"="Century."

This has been brought to you by my studying French throughout high school and college. :bolian:

Well... next to English, I was taught Russian. Never got the chance to learn French.

Thanks for the translation. Did you come up with that building, or was it established in earlier novels?

I can't wait for this. Always great to see more of Bacco.

I'm sorry to see that Dax is involved though, I have had more than enough of her. I hope she has a small role.

Preferably one that doesn't involve coming up with ANY ideas. Or talking about ideas she has had or defending these ideas to other Captains.

Well I don't mind her popping up occasionally, but I've always disliked Dax in every incarnation. I already have to deal with her in the ds9 books, and she had a really big role in Destiny. I've just wouldn't like to see her become a regular in the TNG books. One series featuring the obnoxious, arrogant and unpleasant Dax is all I can take!

It's a bit of a mindfuck, how the mousy little Ensign we met in DS9's final season is now a badass Captain...she's definitely got Kirk, Picard *and* La Forge beat in terms of how fast she's zoomed up the promotion scale. :p

^ Well, ASD isn't a TNG book, and neither is Destiny, so I wouldn't worry about it so much. In any case, Dax does have a supporting role in ASD, as do several other members of her crew (particularly Bowers, Kedair, and Ensign Altoss).
