So, if he's not the lead that we read about in casting sides...who is going to pick up that part?

Like Carlyle, though. Some good news for this series, for a change.

I didn't say he wasn't in anything. I have access to IMDB, and that tells me that Picardo and Bridges are considerably more renown than he. My last post, said that if I listed him based on personal ideas he wouldn't be on a list. However, I did place him on a list based on what he's been in. His resume shows me nothing of notability -- at least not more than Bridges and Picardo -- who, don't get me wrong, also have nothing really worth mentioning. But their piddly roles in things are bigger and more numerous than his.

^You are aware that Beau Bridges has been acting since his childhood, correct? And appeared in some of the biggest series ever on television? Bonanza? Wagon Train? Ben Casey? Rawhide? Dr. Kildare? Gunsmoke? If anything Bridges would definitely challenge RDA for name recognition in the general public.

Just because you haven't heard of him doesn't mean he's nobody, LS. Just means you haven't heard of him before today. He hasn't exactly been in teeny art-house movies over the course of his entire career. I mean, his most recent role was on the 24: Redemption lead-in for one of the biggest series on American TV. A co-worker of mine from Sydney recognized him from Full Monty, and they don't usually adapt Broadway musicals from movies that are teeny tiny unknown things that only played for a bit in a small country in Europe.

I'd be willing to wager there's a decent amount of people for whom this'll get them to watch SGU when they hadn't even heard of it before.

For the record, Beau Bridges and RDA both were pretty well-known before they joined Stargate. I hate to say it, but Bridges' career includes shows that are far more well-known than SG-1 ever will be. And for crying out loud. MacGyver isn't going to put butts in front of the TV's?

Joe Flanigan is probably the least-known commodity of the series leads to date, and we've seen how well that worked.

Nobody at all knows Robert Picardo. He's actually probably more well known by the general public from China Beach instead of Voyager. So let's take him out of the discussion, because he's not a name that can attract new viewers.

RDA had the McGuyver crowd and that worked. In 1997. Beau Bridges as said above has been in many, many things for years although he's still probably best known for being Jeff Bridges's brother, which fine.

Robert Carlyle is still renowned for Trainspotting and The Full Monty. He's done a ton of other stuff (most of it crap, to be honest) but those two films alone have boosted his Q rating. Oh, and he won a BAFTA and was nominated for an Emmy. Here's the popularity name recognition breakdown:

    Beau Bridges
    Robert Carlyle
    RDA
    Jason Momoa

    .
    Picardo
    Ben Browder

I don't see the connection, he's not a stowaway and he thinks he's in charge and I see any evidence of him trying to sabotage the mission.

Oh god, do we REALLY need another whining, arrogant, self obsessed, obnoxious geek character? McKay drove me crazy in the first few years till the writer's finally realised that they fucked up, making him so aggressive like that.

He's a big name, especially in the UK. Picardo is not, anywhere.

Taking things too literally once again

Now who's taking things too literally? Robert Carlyle couldn't play a whiney character if he tried, he's too forceful of an actor for that.

That is the first thing I thought of too. Big "known-ish" actor in premiere...actor disappears after that.

Still, that is quite a catch for SGU. Hopefully that will give some of the premature haters to back down a bit until more info is released.

A pleasant suprise, Robert Carlyle is a fantastic actor. I hope he keeps his Scots accent for the show though.

What does 'he's too foreceful of an actor for that' mean? And I used five words to describe the character, why latch onto just one?

If the character called for is a whining, loud-mouthed, arrogant, obnoxious geek... he'll play a whining, loud-mouthed, arrogant, obnoxious geek.

And McKay was supposed to be grating and obnoxious when he first shown up on SG-1. Spend a couple of years stuck in the wilds of no-bloody-where with technology that isn't up to your standards and see how charming and likable you are. ;)

Rush is described in the press release as a character trying to "unlock the mysteries of the ship and return the group home." Every SG has had their brilliant scientist, Carter, McKay, Zelenka (yes, I'm including him, live with it), and now it looks like we'll add Rush to that group.

We could see a character that's a male version of Carter, or we could see another mellow McKay, or we could see another abrasive know-it-all scenery chewer. Add in the responsibility on his shoulders, and things get interesting. But the fact that the character reportedly has ulterior motives (nothing more specific than that), considering the previous characters who've populated the SG universe, making Rush a mixture of McKay's genius and occasional scene chewing with, say, Ba'al's smooth-talking con-man, and perhaps a little of Daniel Jackson's humanity would be an interesting mix. At least, IMO, it would be.

For one reason he's not described that way, he didn't even eixst as a character til just before Carlyle was cast.

There's little evidence as to what kind of character he'll have but it seem as though there's going to be some conflict between Rush and Young.

    Spectacular choice. :techman:

I look forward to seeing him on the show... that is, until Season 5 when they inexplicably kill him off to "up" the dramatic stakes.

Yes and then when all three shows suck will say "Well that's because we are running three shows at once! That's 60 hours a year... blah blah blah..."

You are so wrong. If you show anyone a picture of RDA they will know exactly who he is and 90% of them will go "He was on Stargate?!?!"

Hugh Laurie would make a perfect Team Leader for an SG Team

If the gate was broken he could try several things, one almost blowing up the gate untill he found out what was wrong with it and how to fix it.

This could be really good news. It could mean the writing is awesome and the show won't suck.

Then again, Scott Bakula was cast in Enterprise and we know what happened there...

He is a brilliant actor and as long as he doesnt try to fake a american accent then all will be well.

coincidently i had never heard of 'Beau Bridges' until he popped up out of nowhere in sg-1, simply didnt like him in that role.
