Interesting choice...a fan of his work. Not sure if I'm digging Universe right now, I thought they were going to give the Stargate franchise a break after Atlantis finishes its run?

I'd venture to say RDA, Beau Bridges, and Robert Picardo all beat him in popularity.

Yeah right! They'd run three series at the same time if they could

You only give a tv franchise "a break" if it's failed.

Sci-Fi might but nobody at Bridge Studios would, they didn't want to SG1 and Atlantis at the same time.

To us geeks maybe, but to the average person on the street who might not have ever watched stargate or voyager, they might find him more familiar than the guy from a show that was 20 years ago, the guy who used to be in films with his more famous brother 20 years ago, and the guy who looks different in every movie he's in and never played a leading role, and most of those films were 20 years ago.

Considering the target age of the audience is people in their 20s...

Interesting. Not quite what I was expecting.

The question for me is what the rest of the cast is going to be like:)

He's a good actor, but not a compelling leading-man type. They should have cast him in more of a "character" role. Is going to be the father figure to a cast full of good-looking young nitwits? The rest of the cast will be what makes or breaks this thing.

Beau Bridges is probably the most well-known of that bunch. RDA was known for McGuyver and Picardo for VOY, but neither show had a wide-ranging audience. Carlyle has mainly had some character roles - he's one of those actors who make you say, "oooh, I know that guy from somewhere..." But you wouldn't be able to say from where, or what his name is.

Or if you need time to re-organize after firing all the writers and producers who have been utter failures for years. Hey we can always hope.

Not who I was expecting them to cast at all. I thought they would cast someone who is either American/Canadian. Oh well, he's out of the running for the new Dr Who then.....

Let's be clear here. We're comparing nobodys with nobodys. When I referred to RDA, Beau Bridges, and Robert Picardo, I was not referring to Stargate or Voyager as their source of popularity.

Have you all seen these guy's resumes? Beau Bridges Robert Picardo. These two have been in everything.

If I had to rank their notoriety I'd put them in the following order... Beau Bridges, RDA, Picardo, Carlyle. Noting that none of them is exactly a landslide victory over any of the others. They've all had mostly bit parts or small character roles in the various things they've had. In the things they've been primary cast in aren't exactly huge, and if they were, it was a one time once-big thing.

You're honestly putting Carlyle at the end of that list?

    Carlyle, RDA, Bridges, Picardo maybe

Just because Bridges has been in series like "Maximum Bob" and Picardo's done an episode of Sabrina the Teenage Witch, doesn't mean they're bigger names then Carlyle. Because they're not.

I remember him in Bond. It's an interesting choice and makes me a little more hopeful for the series.

He's not playing the lead, he's playing a character called Dr Rush I think they have got this a bit wrong. i hope he is in the cast permenantly and not like Robert Patrick was cast as a one off character who dies in the premiere.

That's a possibility, he could be killed off early.

Robert Carlyle is the biggest name this franchise has ever used, because of his movie resume. Full Monty, The World Is Not Enough, 28 Weeks Later. Ravenous. Eragon. He's done a lot of movies and a lot of "genre" work. Plus there's 24: Redemption.

Well, this has my interest piqued. I've been a fan of his going back to Trainspotting and The Full Monty.

From the descriptions of Dr. Rush over on Gateworld, having this casting, if the character is half of the voice I'm hearing, he'll be great. Malozzi refers to the character as "going to be a handful." And from the early word at Gateworld, it sounds like Rush isn't going the way of Sumner. I'm getting a distinct feeling of a throwback to the old McKay, mixed with a little Dr. Smith from Lost in Space for good measure. If I'm right, Carlyle could have a blast with this.

I thought of Dr. Smith too. Maybe a little season 1 Gaius Baltar. I could do without another McKay.

Like I said it's comparing nobodys to nobodys. It's not like it really matters. If I were to choose based solely on my own personal opinion and who I know, Carlyle wouldn't be on any list at all. As I've NEVER EVER heard of him prior to today. The two movies he's been in that I've seen (Eragon and 28 Weeks Later) his role in them either wasn't important enough or the movies themselves weren't good enough that I cared to find out who he was.

Things would be different if a real star was cast in the show, ya know, somebody who's name alone can get people in theaters or in front of a TV screen.

 This is the same crap I had to sift through when they talked Trek XI casting. Just because you haven't heard of someone doesn't mean they're not a star. Maybe you just don't have a broad enough range of film knowledge? Carlyle will get non-sci-fi people tuning into the pilot just like Simon Pegg, Zoe Saldana, John Cho and Zach Quinto will get people into the theater next May.
