Recommend me a video game...

La familia, fed up with my indecision, have delegated my gift-buying to me this season, but the basic problem remains: I don't know what to get myself, and they refuse to accept 'nothing'. So I was thinking a video game, since it's within the price range and it's been a while since the last one (Oblivion), so I thought I would solicit the opinions of what I'm sure are the expert gamers of the TrekBBS. What good games have come out in the last year and a half or so? I have a PC (obviously) and recently picked up a Wii cheap from a friend who finished his degree and couldn't be bothered to take it with him (!), though it only came with MarioKart. Past games I've enjoyed are Diablo I and II, Knights of the Old Republic I and II, Civilization IV, and as I mentioned Oblivion IV: The Elder Scrolls. Basically, I like games that feel deep, that I can customize or micro-manage. No mega-online-multiplayer things, please; I don't have time to keep up with competitive gamers, and so prefer games with solid solo gaming like the aformentioned. I was intrigued by commercials for the latest Star Wars gig ("The Force Unleashed", I think) and that zombie shooter - how are those?

Fictitiously yours, Trent Roman

Yeah, if you enjoyed Oblivion, Fallout 3's a pretty good choice for you.

I loved Oblivion but I really can't get into Fallout 3, so I would vote against it.

Diablo II is one of my favourite games.

Have you played Dungeon Siege 2? I played the PSP game, "Dungeon Siege: Throne of Agony" and I found that really addictive. However I've not been able to find the PC Dungeon Siege 2 game in the shops, so I can't say if it's just as good.

I really liked "Star Wars - The Force Unleashed". I'd definitely recommend it but I should point out it's not without flaws. Still, I thought the presentation, the settings and the ability to wield Force powers were all pretty cool and gave a really good sense of actually being part of the SW universe.
I've only played it through once. It's been lying around since, but I'm pretty sure I'll be playing it again in the not too far future.

Other than that I can't really make any recommendations, I think, since your tastes seem to be somewhat different from mine.

Still, the games I most recently enjoyed a lot and would recommend include:

- Super Mario Galaxy (definitely the best of the bunch, I think).
- Tomb Raider Legend.
- Star Wars: The Force Unleashed.

Force Unleashed will grow on you more you play it but reading your list of games you like, I would say Mass Effect (came out last year) but the best RPG game ever and mixed very well with a FPS system though the powers in it are cool too.

Thats assuming you have a 360...personally I got my parents to get me Far Cry 2 for the PC.

If you have a Wii, then you have an opportunity to experience some truly great games old and new. For starters, superb solo games for the Wii include Super Mario Galaxy, Zelda: Twilight Princess, Metroid Prime 3 and Resident Evil 4. Also from the Gamecube era, you can try Zelda: The Wind Waker and the original Metroid Prime. There's also the remake of the first Resident Evil and challenging racer F-Zero GX.

From the Virtual Console, you can buy even more of Nintendo's excellent franchise games. Off the top of my head, there's Super Mario World, Super Metroid, Zelda: A Link To The Past, The Donkey Kong Country trilogy, Mario 64, Zelda: Ocarina Of Time and Starfox 64.

If I sound like a Nintendo zealot, then I'm guilty as charged!

Trent,

Fallout 3 is superb. Left4Dead is s'posed to be fun but that's feedback re: co-op online, the Mortal Kombat vs DC is a simplistic but fun hand to hand combat game(my wife and I take on the neighbors after football every Sunday and working through the story is amusing, particularly when the Joker is around). Mass Effect was interesting but time-consuming. IMO If you want to micro-manage, Tom Clancy's Endwar isn't bad.

Mass Effect is also available on PC.

If you like customization, Super Smash Bros. Brawl is worthy of consideration. It's got so many ways that you can change the match to your likings. It's full of modes and unlockables, and it's fun with or without other players. It's also got online multiplayer and daily downloads.

I hate the Fallout series, but based on what you said you would probably like it. It's definitely worth a purchase.

Thank you for the suggestions, all. It looks like I've got a pretty consistent shortlist to go do some more research on...

Based on your preferences I'd strongly recommend Fallout 3 and Mass Effect.
