NEMESIS is worst Trek movie

To the guy who's in love with the Shat, I'll always love his cheesy-yet-perfect portrayal of Kirk. But since you're going into what this guy is like in real life, I had an ex who went to college with his daughter. She wasn't on speaking terms with him because of the hell he put her mom through when he slept around.

I know I'm way late to this party, but I'd just like to mention that the album he starred on a few years back, Has Been, has a song about his attempts to reconcile with his daughter. It's quite touching.

Heh, yeah, I didn't mean to resurrect a dead thread. I was doing a search to see if anyone else realized that Nemesis was a complete rip-off of The Wrath of Khan, and came across that post about Shatner and his daughter. I'd recommend checking out 'Has Been', it's worthwhile.

But yeah, The Final Frontier was far superior, in my opinion. I felt no emotion while watching Nemesis. Found the whole thing very boring. TFF has some Grade-A cheese, but I still cared about the characters, and 'Excuse me... what does God need with a starship?' will always be one of my favorite movie quotes.

Nemesis was the worst Trek film, no doubt about it. TFF was cheesy And was crappy but at least it wasn't blasphemous. Nemesis was a slap in the face to anyone with an understanding of what TNG was really about.

As a huge fan of STNG and defender of what it is "about", STNG NEM was wholly in line with STNG on tv. Picard tried to believe Shinzon's peace overture, and even tried to convince him twice to convert to the younger Picard's point view (the Picard who became a mature Starfleet officer and explorer). He appealed to his wonder, which Picard knew he shared, but to no effect. In the end, the Romulan's lust for power evolved into realization of genocide, and they turned against Shinzon. Even the space battle, which STNG had few of, demonstrated two enemies could cooperate together. One of my favorite parts of the movie was the very end, when Donatra suggested peace might be the way for the Romulans and Federation. That is VERY STNG in my opinion, and far less trite than Shatner's "god is in all of us" BS at the end of STV.

You want "blasphemous"? How about Spock having an emotional younger brother, or Uhura turning into a stripper, or three of the most respected fictional characters in TV history getting drunk at a campfire, or SPock letting his captain be captured instead of shooting his brother, or Sulu and Chekov getting lost, or Scotty banging his head on a beam....need I go on??

You want "blasphemous"? How about Spock having an emotional younger brother...ummm,he was an OLDER brother, and it is about as blasphemous as Kirk having a gay son.

As for the rest? NEMESIS made less that FRONTIER, 104 million to 114 million..but in 2003 dollars 114 million would be 189 million..so not only was Frontier the better movie, it was by far a bigger hit...

And where as Frontier didn't kill the TOS movies, they got one more, Nemesis pretty got Berman put into the shit house, Enterprise got it tipped over...

I can actually watch TREK V. I like the scene where Sybok explores the big three's secret pains of their lives. I will never watch Nemesis again for the rest of my life...

FRONTIER the better movie...case closed...

Rob

Better for people who like utter crap perhaps. Nemesis is light years better in every area of production, from music, to set design, to FX, to acting, on and on and on.

Entirely a matter of perspective, but I vastly prefer Nemesis to Final Frontier.

If people prefer Final Frontier, it's no skin off my nose. I doubt they care that I prefer Nemesis. :)

I think TFF has its moments, as does NEM. However, trying to decide which of the two is a better film is like discussing whose shit smells the nicest. :techman:

Nemesis was the most painful of all the Trek movies to watch, imo, so I have to give it the award for "Worst Trek Movie." In it's defense, though, three of the plotlines in the movie could have been reworked into at least semi-decent trek episodes.

While not the worst, NEM was the most disappointing because I had really high hopes for it and was really let down overall. It had some very good scenes that had excellent writing performed wonderfully but they were overshadowed by far too many scenes that were unnecessary and/or awkwardly written. For the most part, it was quite evident that neither the writer nor the director really new these characters. It's a pity that Frakes wasn't at the helm to director.

Having said all that, TFF was simply awful. Bad, bad, bad. Poor writing, SPFX, directing, and acting. Trek would be better off if this film had never been made. Have any of the events ever been referenced in any other series or films? I don't think so, so erasing it from existance hurts nothing and actually would give me back 107 minutes that I could've used productively.

And of course we all know that box office success equals quality.

I can't disagree with that. I do think that if someone had taken the time to tighten the script up, and someone who actually knew the characters (such as Frakes) had been given the helm, this could have been everything it promised. I don't wish to lay the blame at any one person, because that is both unfair and untrue, but I do think Baird deserves to shoulder a lot of the blame. That said, I do believe he did some good work on the action sequences, it's the character moments that suffered at his hand.

Interview with Nemesis production illustrator, David Negron, Jr....

Thanks for sharing that.
I just watched 'Nemesis'.
10 ST movies in a row for the last 10 weeks. :)
My initial feeling is 'Nemesis' is not the worst of the 10.
I will need to rewatch all of them again to post a top10 list.

I don't believe in a "Worst" Trek film...

Each one has its merits.

Now, it's true there are some I prefer less than others and some I pull out on DVD far less often. For me, those would be Final Frontier, Generations, Insurrection and Nemesis...

For me, the problem starts with the story.

It's just not interesting to watch...and it clearly tried to recapture "Wrath of Khan". However, it suffers from a fundamental flaw -- the audience had no emotional pre-investment with Shinzon as they had with Khan. Shinzon did not have the advantage of a history and being in a Next Gen episode as Khan had been.

We knew Khan. We knew he wanted revenge...and we knew why. That's instant drama right there folks!

There was no way Nemesis could have been as good as Khan...not with that storyline it was saddled with.

Now, had Nemesis been a Q film -- or featured Commander Tomalak or Sela... then I think it might have been more successful. But...that's just one Trekker's opinion...

Well having a known anatagonist would have been a nice touch for the fans, but it also would likely have been lost on the general audience, and that's who they needed to make the movie successful, at least as far as box office take.

I agree, the problem started with the script, but the script isn't as flawed as some people like to suggest. Yes, it certainly needed tightening and polishing, but that's just on aspect of a bigger picture.

A Director that knew the characters, and had a sense of what worked for Trek, might have given us a more satisfying movie.

Alas, it's all speculation, and we'll never really know. Pity though. :)

I'm not sure I follow...why would an established villain from TNG have been "lost" on the general audience?

Khan was probably not any better known to the non-Trekker audience. I just think that back story helped a lot.

But, as you say...we'll never know.

TFF had the built in bonus of "the Triumvirate" of Kirk, Spock and McCoy...if not for that -- if this had been ANY other non-Trek film the same people saying they like it would think it sucked.

The whole "search for God" plot was ridiculous and a rehash of "The Way to Eden" and, frankly, the special effects were so bad they took me out of the film...

I try not to be superficial -- but come on...these were just so, so bad...

I would still love to see Shatner come back and redo the visuals. One of the big problems with the film is that the ending was basically patched together with elements from other shots in the editing room because they ran out of money and time to finish Shatner's intended finale.
