no re-release for The Dark Knight

If Ledger isn't nominated for Best Actor, no supporting bullshit, and the film itself for Best Picture then I strongly suggest to every studio that they not bother putting any even vaguely Sci-Fi or Fantasy related film up for nomination ever again.

"Best Actor" and "Best Supporting Actor" are categories strictly designated by billing. Ledger did not have top billing, so it is impossible for him to be nominated for Best Actor.

IIRC, the posters we had in the UK had Bale and Ledger's names above the title and featured the Joker just as prominently as Batman.

But if he didn't have billing before the title in the cast list on the trailers then he wasn't top billing and thus not capable of being best actor.

I think The Dark Knight is a lock for the cinematography and editing awards, and Ledger will certainly be at least nominated for Best Supporting Actor, but in the face of movies like Milk (which is going to have a huge groundswell of support in the Academy after the passing of Prop 8), Slumdog Millionaire (which is just fantastic), The Curious Case of Benjamin Button, The Reader, Frost / Nixon, Revolutionary Road and Gran Torino (and possibly even The Wrestler and WALL-E), I sincerely doubt you're going to see the Academy nominating a movie with cell phone-powered sonar to the exclusion of any of those other films.

It's a stunning film, highly likely to at least get nominated for best picture, and Ledger is a virtual lock for best actor.

Only because he is dead. If he was still alive there is no way his performance would get an Oscar. It is the definition of average.

I keep hearing this and I don't understand the logic behind it.

Don't believe it either.

He turned in an amazing performance. It was deep, disturbing and stunning to watch. You watch this movie wondering where The Joker is and wanting to see more of him.

Ledger's death didn't somehow retroactively change time and space to change the performance he gave, infact his performance was getting buzz and raved reviews from cast memebers and others before Ledger's death.

His performance is just. Good.

Ledger is being submitted for Best Supporting Actor, which i think increases his chances actually. Since it's not a "big" award they probably feel safer in possibly giving/nominating him.
