Newer dvd re-releases that switched to single layer from dual layer dvds?

Was watching the new technology connections video about dvd sets and I had no idea that some of these new dvd complete series collections are worse than old seasons because they switched to single layer dvds and re-encoded them with worse bitrate.

Anyone here can check their DS9 set to see if its dual or single layer dvd?

The DS9 and VOY DVD re-releases continue to use the exact same encoding that was on the original releases.

If that dude has single-layer versions, he bought bootlegs.

[I didn't watch the video, so apologies if that's exactly what he says. :)]

I have a bootleg, I have the DS9 one, and the DS9 one was all dual layer.
My Voyager set is a bootleg.

There was a thread here recently where someone unknowingly got a single-layer bootleg of TNG.

Now I need to go look at my DS9 set. It's the same box design as Alec's there, but I'd bought it from Best Buy... or I hope I had... am going to check... then add some more ellipses... and then a dash of exclamation - oh wait, I got it in 2018 from Amazon. It's probably the real thing, and the only thing better than the real thing is the U2 vid I mean a proper 35mm restoration, but it's all good...

Alec's a really brainy person with a really great way to explain technologies. Might call him a smart Alec... :shifty:

:guffaw:

Also, speaking better of better than the real thing, was an alternate mix of the real thing back in 1991:

So I’m hoping I didn’t get scammed but I haven’t found a post clarifying from someone that actually has the 2020 re-release say their copies are dual-layer.
I purchased my set through Walmart (not 3rd party vendor). It raises a ton of red flags, though.
1. discs are only 4.35GB
2. No copy protection (can copy straight from file explorer)
3. MakeMKV Disc Information timestamp says 2021-04-08 (not sure if that’s the actual mfr date, but thought a later time stamp than release date is fishy. I suppose they could have produced bulk prior to release and keep producing a year after…)

The printing on the box looks okay, pictures could be better but they are sourced from SD material. Physically the discs look good. The edge looks good. The bottom doesn’t have gaps. The silk screening is sharp and pro looking.

Looking to see if anyone with a 2020 set that is sure about theirs is legit has similar specs.

I have the same enshittified release.
I think it's a studio thing.
Someone would have to buy the DS9 set at Walmart with two cases in it's spine.
The proper release is supposed to have 3.
DS9 and Voyager should be packaged like so.
1-3
3-6
7

The Trekcore article highlights a major problem, these are too well packaged, and may or may not even be on sale at WalMart, and the studio doesn't seem to care.
This has been ongoing since 2017.

So, I did buy my DS9 set at Walmart in-store 3 months ago, and it is the 2-box set and all the discs are Dual layer.

The Voyager set I have is also 2-box set which I thought it is supposed to be for the 2020 release. The 3 box set I understood was for the earlier mid-2000’s release
