Music and Passion

Well if you want some really obscure ones:

Ergo Proxy
Eureka 7
Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex
Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex-Solid State Society
Gunslinger Girl
.hack//SIGN
Infinite Ryvius
Kiddy Grade
Last Exile
Madlax
My-HIME
Neon Genesis Evangelion
Noein
Noir
Le Portrait of Petit Cossette
RahXephon

....all have some pretty epic souding soundtracks.

"Serenity" -- David Newman
"The Princess Bride" -- Mark Knopler
"Willow" -- James Horner
"Capricorn One" -- Jerry Goldsmith, R.I.P.
"Robocop" -- Basil Poledouris, R.I.P.
"Stargate" -- David Arnold
"Loch Ness" -- Trevor Jones
"Dark City" -- Trevor Jones
"Signs" -- James Newton Howard
"Unbreakable" -- James Newton Howard

More later.

Add Christopher Young's Hellraiser and Hellbound: Hellraiser 2 soundtracks, and Jerry Goldsmith's The Omen.

Jerry Goldsmith's Alien
John Williams' The Fury
Bernard Herrmann's The Day The Earth Stood Still

The Abyss has very evocative music for me.

Every time I hear the Qui Tollis from Mozart's Mass in C I'm reminded of the atmospheric choral work in The Abyss.

Back to the Future -- Alan Silvestri
Ghostbusters -- Elmer Bernstein, R.I.P.
Edward Scissorhands -- Danny Elfman
Explorers -- Jerry Goldsmith, R.I.P.
The Omega Man -- Ron Grainer, R.I.P.
Something Wicked This Way Comes -- James Horner
Something Wicked This Way Comes -- Georges Delerue (rejected score)
The 13th Warrior -- Graeme Revell (rejected score)
Spaceballs -- John Morris
The 5th Element -- Eric Serra

Just included movies, but there are a bunch of TV shows to list as well.

Not a movie, but Firefly (Greg Edmonson) had a beautiful soundtrack throughout; I love the variety of instruments and arrangements - it was like another character in the show.

Some might not think it SF/F, but National Treasure (Trevor Rabin of Yes) had a great soundtrack, as did Pirates of the Caribbean: Curse of the Black Pearl (Klaus Badelt).

Logan's Run and Planet of the Apes (Jerry Goldsmith)
Heavy Metal (various)
The Incredibles (Michael Giacchino; best "Bond" soundtrack in years! ;))

And neither movie nor TV, but eventually a stage production: Jeff Wayne's "The War of the Worlds" - outstanding!

Altough I enjoyed the soundtrack from Serenity, I was rather disappointed that the sound and feel from the series wasn't carried over to the movie.

Funny you should mention Pirates of the Caribbean, because earlier I wanted to mention the pure musical testosterone of Gladiator... but that's not SFF. However, the Pirates... soundtrack kinda covers that.

Ptrope, you should try a Google Video search for episode of the TV series "Dr. Quinn, Medicine Woman"; I think you'll find there are some interestin similarities between the music at times, and you might appreciate the show's good scoring as well.

I decided I should provide some examples of the music I listed:

Eaters of the Dead (The 13th Warrior rejected)
