USS Kelvin (TOS Version)

Vance

Vice Admiral
In Memoriam
Well, put in a whole bunch of ad-blocker software and all that, so I decided to try to give TrekBBS another go for now. To 'celebrate', I decided to start off with something silly yet appropriate.. the Kelvin! Unmastered!

Note: And, wouldn't you know it? I WOULD put this in the wrong forum...

That's okay. Mind you, if this were REALLY a TOS version, it would read "NCC-514", no bloody "0". ;)

Vance ... this is terrific! That's the best-looking single-nacelle ship I've ever seen!

Three Bolians, sir!
:bolian::bolian::bolian:

Thanks.. but.. erm... could a mod move and merge this to the art forum where it belongs? :)

:sheep:

I dunno. I have never been happy with that clumsy-looking (originally Franz Joseph?) style of saucer. The onscreen Kelvin has superior lines IMHO; indeed, I'd like to see her flat, sleek saucer added as a standard element to Vance's toolkit...

Moving to Trek Art as requested. :)

Edit: Whoops. Didn't realize there was already one here. Ptrope, could you please merge the two? Thanks.

Looks nice. If I were doing it, ;) I'd make the pylon and neck longer though. The actual Kelvin saucer is a good suggestion to, IMHO. Nothing wrong with it as it sits though.

After looking at screen shots of the trailer, I would agree that the neck needs to be a little longer and the pylons a little taller. It looks like the beginning of the dorsal pylon is as tall as the "hump" below the bridge. Plus the notch in the back looks square and it is not as deep.

I would also like to see this design with the Baton Rogue-era saucer and components from the toolkit. I am thinking that Kelvin should look more like your schematic of the Republic.

I love her! Looks better than that sh*t from the movie!

[sarcasm]Considering that their basic configurations are virtually the same, I completely agree.[/sarcasm]

Not to upset the apple cart, but I like em both.

I think the Kelvin being an older ship would fit into the timeline better than a TOS version, it looks more gritty and less advanced except for details like the deflector dish.

I agree. I'd like to suggest you give this another go, Vance... build up a "Pre-TOS-ish" p-hull which looks like the Kelvin's, give it one of the various Pre-TOS-style nacelles which are out there (I know you've played with one or two of them). As for the secondary hull... I like it, but I'd try to better match the pilot-version dish, make the secondary hull a bit shorter (maybe 20% shorter?) and lose the "undercut" (which I've always assumed was there for the same reason that they do that on naval vessels... for sailing stability (except in subspace of course!))

I actually really like the Kelvin (except for the bridge windows in the "Jupiter 2" bridge module). Minimal tweaking is needed to make it an "original continuity" design (and, in fact, if you assume that the destruction of the Kelvin occurs where the two continuities diverge, I'd say that this one ought to be considered part of classic canon!)

I'll still never accept the "newer, kewler" 1701, though.

Looks great. I keep thinking that if they did all the graphics for XI in TOS, but with all the cool CGI then it'd still look fantastic, and probably better...I think you've just solidified that for me! Ta!

Quick note, where would you put Deck 1? Bridge, or top of the secondary hull?

As for the Kelvin, the idea was just to play with the design. I didn't expect quite so much consternation on it. It wasn't supposed to look like the ship in the movie.. it's how she would appear if the 'fandom' had made her in the hey-dey of fandom designs. :) That's why I called it 'unmastered'.

I had played with the Baton Rogue pieces on her a bit, but couldn't settle on anything I really liked. I also don't have the best measurements from the shots I have, so the closer in look to the 'real thing', the more obviously wrong it's going to look.

Deck Numbering Notes: The Bridge is always deck 1, decks above, for whatever reason, that start with 'A' and go up from there. (Using naval tradition).

Thanks for sharing the design with us Vanguard and conjecturing what the Kelvin might look like in the Star Fleet Technical Manual, the FASA RPG, or the Star Fleet Universe! It is appreciated.
