NBA Discussion - 2008-2009 Season

^ so what do you think about the rumored trade offer on the table. Sounds like Denver is offering Allen Iverson for Chauncy Billups. Looks like as close to a win/win trade you can get. Detroit get's an explosive scorer while Denver gets some leadership.

Doesn't sound like a rumor anymore.

Iverson for Billups, McDyess, and Samb.

Billups is a Denver native who played his college ball at CU and is still popular in the state. McDyess is nearing the end of his career.

I guess there was no way to divide the ball enough between Melo and AI.

Oh wow. I'm still an Iverson fan, despite a parting that wasn't 100% amicable. If anyone deserves a championship, it's him. No one plays harder than he does. I hate the Pistons, so I won't exactly be rooting for him. I guess Denver simply isn't a good fit, though.

What people aren't talking about that trade is this little nugget (no pun intended)...

Rasheed is expiring after this season. Allen Iverson is expiring after this season. That's $35 MILLION (!) off the books. ESPN on this little note:

Down, the road the Pistons becomes the driving force of big-time free agency as soon as Iverson's contract comes off the books next summer. The Pistons will combine a winning environment, one of the most respected general managers in the game, and -- depending on salary cap levels that are yet to be set, and extensions that may yet be given to existing Pistons -- likely enough cap space to sign two free agent players to max contracts over the next summers of 2009 and 2010.

If you see the list of 2010 free agents you see why this is such a big deal. Wow.

Did you hear his press conference after the trade? You can hear Dumars in the backgroudn say something about "practice". Iverson didn't miss a beat and went on "Practice? We're talkin' about practice?" Perfect timing and nice humorous moment. Kudos to AI for rolling with it!

Anyone see the "fight" from the Suns v Rockets game? I liked the reaction by Shaq after the game regarding pushing Tracy McGrady. "Somebody pushed Steve so I had to take care of my little man." Just cracked me up.

hahaha, awesome

Someone beat the Lakers. They are definately the best team in the league. Hey, warriors play the Pistons night. I wonder what Barkley will say about the team this year. Probably more of the same, even though I do have to wonder if the defense has somewhat improved. They are finally using thier big guys in Wright and Randolph.

Your Spurs have also been beaten up in the nastiest way with injuries. Ginobli and Parker, two starters and probably the two best scorers are both out for quite awhile.

I really don't know much about him, except that he's won those championships. The Spurs have been one of my favorite champions, because of the professional way they go about business. Some folks find it rather boring, and I can certainly see that. But it does work and the team isn't exactly mired in controversy.

Wasn't Popovich once like the GM or something for the organization? I can't remember who was coach at the time, but I think there was some kind of controversy over how they got along.

Yes, Popovich was the GM and when he fired Coach Bob Hill after 18 regular season games in 1996. He then took over as interim head coach and never stepped down.

On the plus side, rookie George Hill has stepped up big time as the temporary starting PG. Once he has a little more seasoning, he's going to be a huge asset off the bench when Parker's back, and a viable option at SG when they want to play small ball. Roger Mason has shown a lot of good things too.

Not only are they hurt by injuries, they're having a lot of growing pains. For a team that's always been known as old, they have a lot of inexperienced players trying to get worked into the system. I'm curious what the rotations are going to look like once everybody is back to 100%.

They're going to struggle for a while, but hopefully they can keep their heads above water until everything gets worked out.
