NBA Discussion - 2008-2009 Season

The Blazers have been all over the place so far this season, but I guess you have to expect that with such a young team. At least Oden is playing again now.

The Blazers are the team I am going to watch the most this season, next to the Cavs. It's largely because of Oden but also because Portland has such a great collection of young talent. They should be very fun to watch as Oden gets stronger and more used to the strength and speed of his opponents, not to mention his own teammates.

Nice to see an Unknown have an outstanding game today. Anthony Morrow with 37 points and 11 rebounds. What a game for this young guy and good win from the Warriors.

The Spurs are finally starting to string together some wins, even without their top two scorers. They've held their last five opponents to under 90 points (they held the Rockets to 75). Once Parker and Ginobili are back and up to speed, things are going to start rolling.

He's looked good in a couple of games.

Went to my first Warriors game a couple of Fridays ago with my oldest son on Cub Scout night.

It seemed to me that they are a team looking for a new leader. Capt Jack would seem to step up at times, then fade back. I think he really only want to be the number two guy. The rest of the cast was really inconsistent, but the rookies (don't recall the names) did come in and fight.

It'll be interesting to see how Nelson runs the team through the year.

That game wasn't pretty, but the Warriors pulled it out. They really need to work on inbounding the ball under pressure. They made some really bad passes there and they barely won the game because of it. Does the ball always need to go to Stephen Jackson? If he isn't open, or has 2 defenders on him, go to someone else. Also, I wonder why they had Morrow sit out most of the 4th quarter. He's your best player currently, give him the ball. Still, a win is a win, and the Warriors are on a winning streak. Hopefully it continues against the Bulls.

At the end of the season, I am going to be very interested in seeing how this year's rookie class is compared to previous years. Derrick Rose has a great shot at making the All-Star team. OJ Mayo and Michael Beasely are proving their worth with some impressive numbers and playing time. Oden is smoothly coming back from his foot inury, and I have no doubt it won't be long before he's competing for news reel time.

But who the heck is this Rudy Fernandez?

Rudy Fernandez was a Spanish star who led Spain's Olympic team to the championship game. He was originally drafted by Phoenix, but traded to Portland who bought out his contract so that he could join the NBA with the Blazers. From Wiki:
Rudy Fernández. won the 2006 and 2008 Catalan League championships, the 2006 FIBA EuroCup championship, the 2008 Spanish King's Cup championship, and the 2008 ULEB Cup championship while playing with DKV Joventut of the Spanish ACB League. He also won numerous personal awards while playing with DKV Joventut, such as the 2004 Spanish King's Cup MVP, the 2006 FIBA EuroCup Final Four MVP, the Euroleague 2006-07 season's Rising Star Award, the 2008 Spanish King's Cup MVP, the 2008 ULEB Cup Final MVP, and the 2008 Catalan League Final MVP.
The guy is a pretty damned good player.

No kidding! A sweet shot and good hustle, too! Fernandez, Roy, Aldridge, Oden ... the Trailblazers may have the brightest future of anyone given the quality of their talent, even if it is young talent. Here's hoping they have the right coach for the job, a guy who knows how to meld it into a unit.

Well Nelson doesn't trust rookies, and he had just recently mishandled a ball. He'll get there is he keeps up this pace. Nice surprise for the team this season and a silver lining to the Elles cloud. He probably wouldn't have seen any playing time without that happening.

Jackson is the go to guy on this team, and currently the point guard. He's going to get the end of game shot for now.

How about the Knicks? Two huge deals that freed twenty-something million in cap space. So in 2010, they'll be able to sign not only Lebron, but two superstars (like Dwayne Wade). And with a coach like D'Antoni in place, and the fact that it's one of the biggest markets, it's going to be very tempting. Unless Cleveland starts winning championships, say goodbye to Lebron.

That'll be a sad day for the city of Cleveland if LeBron decides to leave, and I really hope it doesn't happen. With all the sports disappontment that city has suffered through, it would be punch right in the gut for them.

It'll suck for Cleveland, but it's not a surprise. There's been more talk of Lebron playing in Greece than of him returning to Cleveland. When does Sheed and AI's contracts expire for the Pistons? If it's the same time the Knicks free up cap, I'm expecting some pretty big off-season moves.

It looks like the Knocks have written off their season, though (unless they managed to make a trade through time and got the Cuttino Mobley and Tim Thomas from a bunch of years ago). Considering it's a three-way tie for second in the east at .500 and the Celtics are dominating above that, it's not really a surprise.

Indeed, it is not a surprise. Even from the day they drafted him #1 the Cavs HAD to know something like this was on the horizon.

The Knicks are clearly getting salary cap room for 2010. The next question is when they can dump Starbury's contract, not that Starbury himself isn't reason enough for him to be gone.

Sheed and AI's contracts both expire at the end of this season. Detroit will have some serious cap space in 2010 too.

I could see them both going after Lebron. If there's a bidding war, it'll impact the chances of getting a second great player (although I know the NBA's salary rules are complex enough that I could be completely wrong there).

I cannot see LeBron going to Detroit, though. Of course, he'd be playing for a team run by Joe Dumars and there is no more classy a guy in the league than he. No, I'd think New York would stand a better chance, just because it's New York.

I think the only thing that Detroit really has going for it is a history of success. Dumars is a pretty savvy manager, and he usually puts a good team on the floor each and every year. If Lebron wants to win, Detroit is a good pick. If he wants the media spotlight, New York is the way to go.

That sums it up well, although I think D'Antoni has the Kincks going in the right direction.
