Star Trek trailer description (Spoilers)

If Kirk is that young shouldn't he be on Tarsus IV? Maybe he was running from Governor Kodos?

seems cliched with Kirk being a rebellious teen who is destined for greatness and doesn't fit in.

I get the same vibe. And Spock will be the rebellious Vulcan destined for greatness. My guess is they are two headstrong men who can't be told anything. They butt heads at first, then begin to realize they are basically one-in-the-same. In fact, they complement each other. Fine. Nothing new here. But I'll wait to see how they pull it off. I mean, most of the enjoyment will be in the execution. Thematically, what's new out there, anyway?

I have only one question. Where is the Enterprise?
J.J. could really be an ass and make us wait 'til the actual movie to see that...

However, with the Enterprise being one of the most recognizable things from Star Trek to the general public, if only from a marketing standpoint, I can't see how they don't include it in the trailer. And if not in this trailer, than in one following it.

Anyway, I loved the part in the description on AICN where McCoy says: "Space isn't supposed to fun! It's full of aliens and phasers and death!"

Holy crap, I am SO excited. I feel like a little kid before Christmas. I am going to DIE of suspense and anticipation before this trailer comes out. :p

Some thoughts:

1. I am not too sure about angry Spock and angry Kirk fighting. It just seems so odd to see that from two characters who were best friends in TOS fighting like that. Of course, it is years before TOS and people forget that Spock is half human, half Vulcan, and I believe that has been mentioned that at the Academy Spock took a while to find himself. I want to see where it goes.

2. Rebellious Kirk: Kirk has always been rebellious, throughout TOS and in the movies. Why is it surprising that he is here? It's just he hasn't matured into the man he is in TOS and the films.

3. Scottish voice: "This is fun." I expect nothing less from Scotty.

4. "Aliens and Phasers and Death.":guffaw::guffaw:

5. I was wondering how they would get this trailer to NOT look Star Trek till the last moment. It seems they did a good job.

I'm a bit dubious about some of that second tipper's comments in particular, but there are some interesting things for the reading.

In a way I hope that we don't see Enterprise in this trailer and that he does make everyone wait to see it in the movie. I get weary of so many story details and so many major visuals being known in advance that actually going to the theater becomes a sort of afterthought. Being surprised by something used to be part of the reason you went to see a movie; more and more I see complaints that not enough was given away beforehand (and later that everything else wasn't explained beyond a shadow of a doubt in the DVD extras. Yeesh.)

That does have a certain McCoy quality to it, doesn't it? :D

I see the unveiling of the Enterprise like the reveal of the Cloverfield monster. JJ loves to keep the audience in suspense.

And in so doing, he lets their imagination get a workout, wondering just what they're going to see.

I can't say I see this as a bad thing, and it sounds like smart filmmaking.

I agree, thats what a TEASER trailer is suppose to do.

Its like revealing all the good jokes in a trailer. Then when the movie is out you've been bombarded so many times by tv spots, you just want to throw your shoe at the cinema screen.

Sometimes less is more

I remember the Goldeneye trailers literally spelling out "006 is the bad guy!" yeesh

(Nervously waits for the inevitable arguments to arise about registry numbers, various irrelevant minutiae)

Kirik can't drive stick! It's canon! If that Chevy isn't an automatic, I'm going to be very upset.

If they show any vintage corvette without a stick shift it is a crime against humanity. Besides, Kirk driving a muscle car with an automatic transmision .....puhleeeeeze, makes him a pussy.

I am a supporter of this film - I hope it will bring something to the screen we've not seen before and I hope it will embed within the franchise a blockbuster ethic that relates to what we see up on the big screen and provides a handsome return for the studio thus ensuring that we see more.

However, I am not fan of the 'teen angst' thing, I am no fan of the 'my parents don't understand me' school of entertainment.

The nature of such things leaves me with a worry that I can't articulate or easily express - sometimes we need to accept that things are what they are and ten minutes of fleshing out why James T Kirk is James T Kirk might seem a little empty and lacking in depth, ten minutes of this might just be ten minutes wasted. If it's aimed at the lowest common denominator (vacuous teenagers, armed with knives and guns, high on crack while busily recreating themselves with females of dubious and loose moral standards) then this could be a disaster while adding nothing to the story other than an emotional hook for stupid and vacuous people.

Hope I'm wrong but..............

I don't understand the resistance to a rebellious kid Kirk. He has ALWAYS been rebellious, but he was also a mature adult in TOS and the movies. I would rather have something a little cliche, but keeping in line with a character, rather then changing him, even though it has been established what kind of person he is.

If it means anything, one of my best friends is a guy who I knocked out in High School several years ago.

True, and its an interesting dynamic to not see Kirk and Spock be buddy buddy. We have just never seen it before, and thats why I think it will be weird.
