Plan 9 from Outer Space!!!

I'm watching Plan 9 from Outer Space... again. I've probably watched this movie more times than any other film, with the possible exception of Star Wars.

Who also loves this movie?

A few months back I wrote a score for a stage musical version of it. Working on the book right now. (NOTE TO SOME: "Book" is all the dialogue and stage directions that aren't lyrics or music. Also called the "libretto".)

You BASTARD! I started working on a stage musical version about 2 years back (though it has been stalled in development due to...the world and such).

The idea was to present every plot-turn as a new song in a different musical style (not unlike the way the Oompa-Loompas were done in the Johnny Depp "Charlie & The Chocolate Factory" movie score).

The stage rights for P9FOS are rather murky. The only "legal" stage version of it was produced back in the 1980's and was OK'ed by Wade Williams III, but it's not clear if the actual stage rights are public or still maintained by the Williams family.

I wrote the entire score in one month (fourteen songs), and am still working on the book. It's a slightly different approach -- a slightly inept community theater group producing a stage version of PLAN 9, so there are essentially "two" casts of characters.

Don't worry, though, I'm betting there are HUNDREDS of stage versions of it lurking about.

Who also loves this movie?

Me! The first time I saw it was a 2am showing on TV many moons ago, with a couple of friends who had already seen it a gazillion times. During the commercial breaks, my buddies would quote scenes back and forth from memory. Their version of the Gravedigger Scene was a scream. One of the best movie-watching experiences I ever had.

Plan 9 is the ultimate example of So Bad It's Hilarious. I laughed 'til I hurt the first time I saw it; it's had the same effect ever since. Who couldn't enjoy lines like these:

Criswell: "And remember, my friends, future events such as these will affect you in the future."

Air force officer: "Visits? That would indicate visitors."

Wife: "I've never seen you in this mood before."
Husband: "I guess that's because I've never been in this mood before."

Wife: "Now toddle off and fly your flying machine."

Army colonel: "For a time we tried to contact them by radio but no response. Then they attacked a town, a small town I'll admit, but nevertheless a town of people - people who died."

General: "Atmospheric conditions in outer space often interfere with transmitting."

Criswell: "My friend, you have seen this incident, based on sworn testimony. Can you prove that it didn't happen?"

Priceless. *** leaves to find and watch it ***

I'm not sure what happened to my ORIGINAL DVD copy...but the colorized/autographed Mike Nelson version (with optional commentary) is a prize in my collection.

When I first heard about the remake, I definitely had a reaction. At this point I no longer care. Maybe I'll watch the remake, and maybe I won't. In any case, the new thing won't spoil the original.

No remake could recapture the sheer hilarity and ineptness of the original. The numerous scenes where night turns to day turns to night in the space of a minute or two, the self-piloting plane (the pilots never touch any controls), the sets that wobble and fall over, the boom mike shadows... Along with the dreadful acting, the Bela Lugosi non-lookalike and the hilarious dialogue, it makes a complete package that couldn't be re-created.
