Re: Would You Watch a Trek Series with an all male, all human main cas
I like shows with all male casts. One of the reasons I think the first three years of Law & Order was so great.
Would Trek fans here watch a Trek series with an all male, all human main cast?
Hmmm... depends... why would it be all-male?
There are certain differences which will always exist between males and females... in terms of temperment, in terms of physical characteristics, etc, etc... which make males more suitable for some jobs and females more suitable for others.
In a "Navy" situation (which most Star Trek represents) this is an entirely moot point, I think. So a "starship show" with an all-male cast... seems fairly unreasonable.
On the other hand, suppose you were doing a "Starfleet Marines" show. Something more along the lines of "Band of Brothers," for instance. Well, in that case, I would have no problem with the CORE CAST being all-male. Obviously, they'd be interacting with women (hopefully in reasonable and believable ways) but the primary cast could certainly be all-male. The smaller the group you were looking at, the more reasonable this would be... since while there are undeniably women out there who can kick the ass of most men, it's statistically less common than the other way around.
So, for instance, if this was a "Federation SWAT Team" sort of thing, with a dozen or so team members, going from trouble-site to trouble-site... sure, make it all male and I'd be hunky-dory with it.
It's hard to come up with other examples, however.
I get the impression that what you're REALLY suggesting is a counterbalance to the rather annoying tendency to be "politically correct" in terms of casting and character-creation factors in more recent Trek. I have no problem with a female character... provided that the character's PRIMARY DEFINING CHARACTERISTIC isn't that "well, it's a woman, get with it neanderthals!"
Give us a character who makes sense for the situation and the purpose of the role (good storytelling, not political-correctness preaching) and I'm sure we'll all be happy with that character, regardless of race, gender, or anything else.
To date, my favorite "mixed gender" team remains the Colonial Marines from ALIENS. Vasquez made great sense... I had no trouble accepting her as a combat soldier. The pilot was fine... her gender was irrelevant. And the medic was a more typical female (that's not sexist, folks, it's just honest). Ripley was the only one who even remotely rubbed me wrong there... the mix between "badass warrior" and "nurturing mommy" was a little bit "off" I think, though by no means did it harm the flick.
