Don Cheadle replaces Terrence Howard in "Iron Man 2"

I didn't think Howard really brought a whole lot to the role. I'm not familiar with the man's other work but I wasn't all that impressed.

What I'm curious about though is why the character needs to be "big", isn't he just a guy in a big suit of armor. I don't read the comics but is there anything to his size other than the way he's drawn? Does it have some bearing on the actual role?

Rhodey in the comics is pretty beefy. He's a MILITARY GUY RAWR so he has a ripped physique. Especially now that he's a cyborg.

I like Cheadle. He's a great actor. The other guy sucked. When he gave that line about "next time" it was so over the top and bad he reminded me of Cuba Gooding saying 'SHOW ME THE MONEY!". Cheadle can only be better.

He honestlt wasn't given that much to do, and besides, who's to say that's how he'd act behind the stick...

(RHODEY and WINGMAN fly over RANDOM ENEMY AIRSPACE)

WINGMAN: "Rhodey, there's a bogey on my six..."

RHODEY (screaming): "EAT LEAD FUCKIN' CHINKS YEAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAH!!!"

(MIG torn to shreds in a BULLET STORM by RHODEY)

RHODEY (Grandma Voice): "Well, looks like everything the Chinese make is cheap shit."

Hm. I didn't see that coming.

I liked Howard in Iron Man. That being said, Don Cheadle sounds like a good replacement in my own mind's eye. I can see him bringing in a solid performance as James Rhodes. It's disappointing that Howard and Marvel couldn't come to an agreement. That being said, I look forward to Don Cheadle's performance in the next film.

Maybe they'll have a different actor each movie, like with Ernest Blofeld! :)

A closer comparison would be Felix Leiter. The constant recasting for the part turned Bond's best friend in the novels into a forgettable, obligatory "generic US Agent". Unlike M, Q, and Moneypenny which have been household names for decades. All of which had consistent casting while Leiter did not.

Of course this mistake has finally been corrected with casting the brilliant Jeffery Wright in the two most recent films.

news like this doesn't bode well for hopes of having norton still be bruce banner. i think we'll have a 3rd banner for the next hulk incarnation. >_<

I didn't want to mention Felix Leiter... since Jeffrey Wright has signed on to be Rhodey in Iron Man 3. :p

Howard was always wrong for the part. Although I've seen to films he's been in I don't remember Cheadle so I can't comment on him a replacement. :shifty:

Actually The Incredible Hulk's weak Box Office is more of a sign of that. If the new Punisher film has similar results Marvel may start to realize that audiences like to associate a single actor with these roles for an extended period of time.

In unrelated news, Katie Holmes, Terrence Howard, Eric Bana, Jennifer Connelly, Thomas Jane and Billy Dee Williams have been cast as the new Justice League.

That just not right... :D

But in related news...shoot...I was hoping for Wesley Snipes to play Rhodie.

When did he become a cyborg? ( I haven't picked up a comic book in over 10 years)

IIRC, he was injured during Civil War and ended up being repaired (and turned into a T-1000). He's been cyborg'ed at least as long as the new IIM.:borg:

Wow, this is really surprising. On the other hand, Terrance Howard didn't really thrill me all that much in Iron Man (or really in anything else) and I love Don Cheadle. As others have said, The Dark Knight has proven that won't necessarily hurt in the next film.

I have no problem with recasting in itself, but Howard and Cheadle do not look or sound alike. It just makes it harder to believe this is the same character that the other characters knew if the new actor doesn't look similar enough. Maggie replacing Katie as Rachel Dawes in The Dark Knight was fine because the had a similar look, whereas I think Howard and Cheadle have distinctly different voices and appearances.

Meh - a lot of people said Robert Downey Jr. was wrong for the role of Tony Stark because physically he was too small and not quite swarthy enough. He proved them all wrong in one fell swoop.
