Don Cheadle replaces Terrence Howard in "Iron Man 2"

Sounds like Howard maybe overestimated his value to the franchise.

But this opens up the possibility of Hustle & Flow 2, which we all know will make Iron Man-type money.

I find this surprising, but perfectly acceptable. Cheadle is a fine actor, and I've always enjoyed his performances. Howard was fine in Iron Man, though he didn't knock my socks off. As to Cheadle not having the build for the roll - that's exactly what they said about Robert Downey Jr.

Well, I hate to hear this news; I thought Howard was a good fit for Rhodey. However, I think we all know that Cheadle is not coming all that much cheaper than Howard; the two have had comparable movie careers (even down to the Oscar nominations). However, I would argue that Cheadle is a little more popular in the wider world right now and thus genuinely worth a little more money than Howard.

Given all of that, I doubt this move by Marvel Studios is really about finance; I believe Marvel just used Howard as an example that their unique goal of movie continuity does not mean an actor can try to hold them hostage for money. Marvel knew they needed to nip that thought in the bud, and Howard must have been the first they thought they could stand to lose.

I'm surprised to hear this, because Howard seemed to be looking forward to the prospect of playing War Machine down the line. And, more practically, because I would have assumed that the main cast had a sequel clause built into their original contracts, in order to prevent this sort of situation.

I'm not overly familiar with the character from the comics, but I thought Howard was fine, if not outstanding, in the first movie. His voice did seem a little off, as I recall. Cheadle is at least his match as an actor and I'd be surprised if he didn't bulk up a bit to make himself a bit more convincing in the role.

Must admit, I read an interview with Howard around the time that IM was released and I thought he seemed like a bit of an asshole. Admittedly, Marvel have been known to be assholes too (the situation with Favreau springs to mind), so it's hard to say where the fault lies with this one.

You're 100% right.

Howard was in the second top grossing film of the year, had a large part in the film too, his second biggest film of his career. Yet he feels he deserves a higher salary than the films star?:wtf:

Too quote all my brotha's in da hood: "Negro, please!!!!"

I don't remember any of this criticism of Terrence Howard when the first film was out. It seems to be a case of a jilted lover saying "The sex was never that good anyways!!!" ;)

I think Cheadle is a really fantastic actor, but he's just too different than Howard to sit well with me. Body size, facial structure, voice, he's just so different and I liked Terrance Howard.

Ugh. I hate recasting.

People seemed to complain about Howard when the film came out, though, so maybe this will make them happy?

Yeah. Because Marvel doesn't want what happened with TDK. No, sir.

A 2.5 hour movie that was over hyped because of a deceased co-star?

And made 500 million dollars at the box office. The answer to your question is Yes. Marvel would absolutely love to have an over-hyped 2.5 hour movie that made 500 million dollars at the box office.

So would I, if the over-hyped movie was as good as TDK

That's a surprise. But they definitely won't lose anything. They replaced a very good Oscar-nominated actor with a great Oscar-nominated actor.

excellent, getting rid of an absolute muppet & replacing him with an excellent actor. Smart move. Howard you will not be missed.

Cheadle is definitely a good choice. I wasn't all that enthused about Howard getting the role but I thought he did okay. Unfortunately, this prevents Cheadle, and maybe Howard too, from being another hero, at least a Marvel hero like Black Panther or Deadlok. Cheadle, because he's attached to Rhodes and Howard, because his departure might've left bad blood. I hope it didn't.

Stupid fucking decision. Cheadle is a great actor but he has no charisma like Howard did in the role. Coupled with the guy that wrote Tropic Thunder writing the script, this seems like Spiderman 3 all over again.
