First of all, hello. This is the first time I've logged on in almost half a year, and even the last time was just to visit and attempt to rejoin. It's nice to see familiar handles again.

Now, back on topic:

I may have asked this before, but if I did it was a long time ago and we may have different members and different opinions by now. Do you think that the very minor dalliance with Captain Janeway was part of Inspector Kashyk's plan, trying to unsuccessfully throw her off, or do you think he was really interested in her?

I always thought his story of needing to let them go to avoid the shame of the telepaths getting away seemed a bit thin to me. Consequently I believe he was tempted enough not to wish to see her killed but not tempted enough to abandon his life and go with her.

Wow! You manged to reply faster than I could finish the poll. (Darn 100 character limit. I have never exactly been known for my concision.)

I agree with you. She was doing most of the starting when he left the bridge that last time, but he hesitated too when he looked back, and he had no reason to lie anymore when he said that she'd made a tempting offer.

I think they were attracted to each other in a "wishful thinking" sort of way, but they both used each other's attraction to further their plans. Kudos to Kathryn for not letting him get to her! :bolian:

I completely agree with you. They both mixed duty and pleasure and used or at least double-guessed each other. There can be attraction where there is distrust... especially when you're that lonely. And isn't being attracted to the wrong person more exciting than the guy/girl next door?
The bad boy/bad girl or sleeping with the enemy effect. Oh yeah.

Yes, it's been argued that the expression on Janeway's face at the end weakens it, showing that Kashyk 'got to her in the end'. That's plainly ridiculous - this episode is about two people who are attracted to each other, but keep their focus and do their duty anyway.

If he had truly "got to her," events would have concluded very differently -- the telepaths would have been discovered, and Kashyk's people would have won. I still think Kathryn had some regrets, but they were along the lines of "I wish he hadn't forced me to choose between him and my duty/honor." Because with Janeway, duty and honor will win EVERY TIME.

She used him as ruthlessly and cynically as he used her.

The idea that Janeway would be genuinely attracted to a...dirtbag (if I described him as I'd like to I'd probably be warned) like Kashyk has never sat well with me. I disliked Kashyk so much I really don't care if he was sincerely attracted to her or not.

Good to see you again, Scatta. :bolian:

^So you'd probably be disappointed in me for thinking that the whole Kashyk thing was really hot? ;)

It's good to see you again, too, and everyone. I've just joined too many forums over the years. I can't keep up anymore!

Nah, you're as entitled to your opinion as anyone. And it's only a TV show. ;)

All you need to remember is that this is the important one. The rest don't matter. :D
