Rob Liefeld...

I've read about Rob Liefeld, a famously bad comic book artist who was none the less successful and popular back in the mid to late 80s and early 90s, but fallen out with fandom in recent years and a couple years back out with Moore, and is now being seen as a low benchmark for hack mediocrity.

I found this article very funny and I myself have taken piss out of Liefeld's drawing style here (note the convoluted female torso, bent out of shape).

I get a kick out of those anti Liefield websites, the only thing good he did was create Deadpool.

I think his work is best for "cover artwork." Kinda like how I think that Alex Ross's work is best as cover artwork.

In any event, I don't get why the guy has so much venom spewed at him. Granted, he does have a unique style and, if not reigned in, he can go overboard at time (re: Cap boobs). However, compared to other artists at the time, I thought his work stood out. Much of the artwork that went around all seemed to have a very bland, sameness look between artists.

Now, you can debate whether you liked his style, but at least it was something conformist, imo.

That was funny stuff. I can't believe he didn't include this drawing in his critique:

Here is another attempt to ape Liefeld.

Liefeld Check List

*Giant bulging codpiece

*Giant swords/knives sticking out the back with no straps

*Oversized elbow and shoulder pads

*Tiny head relative to size of body

*Lots of pouches around the waist

*Oversized legs

*No feet

*Magic crayon background

*Tiny face cast half in the dark with a glowing left eye socket

*Poorly drawn hands masked by oversized lazer rifle

How was he so popular, even though there is relatively little craft behind his work? But his style is certainly distinctive and drawing like that is rather addictive.

Balls. Being unschooled, untalented and incompetent is not a "style." The guy doesn't know the very rudiments of anatomy. He does have some knowledge of composition. His success is a slap in the face to those of us who bothered to actually learn the craft.

From the new Deadpool:

(I converted this to a link. 600+ MB is a little large to be posting inline. Thanks. - Spiff)

I do like that Way is continuing the "Breaking The 4th Wall" tradition that was used in Deadpool's previous series. Wade is far too amusing to not have his own series free from Cable.

Rob Liefeld's Captain America looks morbidly obese and badly deformed. :cardie:

I've done two drawings aping Liefeld's style:

Swordsman
Man and Woman

He got paid millions for drawing stuff not much better than that?! But I say again I admit that drawing stuff Liefeld-style is oddly fun and addictive, even if the output has relatively little craft behind it. And if Rob Liefeld does something quite good, you find out that he has blatantly ripped it off something better in a tacky way.

Are you kidding? He's head and shoulders above Liefeld.

He might be a little moodier than some people might like, but I imagine that's why he sticks to projects like illustrating Dracula or the covers for The Dark Tower comic adaptations.

But there's no question that he's more skilled than Liefeld, based on anatomy alone.

Next time Beaker, quote my whole sentence, because you are taking it out of context by quoting only part it. The rest of that contains the phrase "if not reigned in, he can go overboard." With Cap, he was not reigned in and it caused a lot of the goofiness that he's connected with (Cap Boobs being the most notable).

And regardless if you like it, if it's good, or if it is bad, the man has a style.

He's possibly gotten better but when Jae Lee worked on Transformers/GI Joe Crossover, it was quiet possibly one of the worst pieces I've ever seen. Was it colorful? Sure, but...well...You can't tell which characters are which. His use of lighting and shadows is absolutely horrendous in the Crossover.
