A Private Little War - Minor Classic..

I like this shot.

I can't believe that this one made it past the tight NBC censors.

Well the censors had a lot to do on this episode already. Bob Justman wrote in his book "Inside Star Trek" that they extended the shower scene on purpose in order to bargain with the censors. He actually claims that they succeeded with their ploy and the part of that scene that they wanted in stayed in which is strange as I have never seen the episode containing the shower scene. It is only (in very, very poor quality) in the blooper reel.
I cannot believe that no better print of that has survived. Maybe someone has at least stills of that scene and - who knows - with modern digital video enhancement one could probably restore the scene into the episode. All just in the interest of honouring the initial creative decision and thus correcting the time-line, of course ;).

Captain Pike, Ive always loved this ep, too. Personally, I love the clash between the woman witch doctor's occult knowlegde and McCoy's, and the whole weird scene in which she appears magically to heal Kirk.

(Sneaking fondness for Mugatu!)

How did Kirk recognize Tyree from that distance, all those years later, when they all look like identical little blonde dots ?

By the shape of his ass.

No no, it's the bit of psychic ability that everyone in the future has. You can see it in episodes where someone points to the viewscreen and says "LOOK! THERE!" moments before the editor actually cuts in the footage of something appearing. :)

I think that was the point of the episode. It was a primitive culture, unspoilt by the horrors of "modern" technology, especially warfare.

Now the Klingons had introduced firearms, so in order to preserve the status quo, Kirk had to also provide these weapons. This would lead to the development of firearms, and I'm sure that by the time of TNG/DS9, they would be manufacturing fully-automatic weapons.

It's been reported that the TNG episode Too Short a Season started out as a return visit to Neural, with the TNG episode showing the effects of Kirk's decision a century on.

^ That could have been cool, seeing the ramifications of Kirk's actions a century later. But it does go to show that TNG in its first season really did try and copy TOS storylines, didn't it? ;)

I LOVE this episode.....one of my favorites

It has a lot of the more risque moments. Besides the sexual stuff mentioned already, the violence is high. I watched this episode with a casual fan of trek over this summer, and he actually gasped when those guys stabbed Nona at the end.....it's rather shocking, and so quick, it really gets you.

and I agree with whoever said this might have the best teaser of any trek episode.

Wasn't Nona nearly gang raped in this episode before she was killed?

Why did an Away team to collect plants feature the Captain, the First Officer and the Chief Medical Officer?

One last question . .. . if Kirk and the others knew that Neural was a technically primitive planet, why did they bring their phasers to the surface?

Yep.

Kirk had been to the world before, Spock was probably part of the scientific team.

Mugato.

Same here, I enjoy watching APLW. :techman:

Think about this: Nancy Kovack is 78 years old these days!
And married to conductor Zubin Mehta for 47 years. That's no small thing in an industry where, as comedian Rita Rudner said, "a marriage is a success if it outlasts milk."

EDIT: Oops, didn't realize this was a "necro" thread.

She certainly was drool-worthy - great body and quite beautiful.

Glad I'm not alone though in thinking this episode has a lot to offer - if you can get past the Mugatu costume and the silly blonde wigs. Scratch the surface and the parallel with Vietnam is all too vivid, and as is mentioned upstream, at a time when the war was still on this was pretty brave storytelling.

It's of course a shame the lesson was never learned by the superpowers themselves, in a real world sense - though that is a discussion best reserved for another forum.

Once again, three cheers for A Private Little War. Even in this day and age, it's message is never more poignant..

She looked better in this than she ever did anywhere else and that includes Jason and The Argonauts!

In a war between Tyrees people and the black haired nutcases I wonder where The Kan-utu people would have stood?
(On the otherside of the hills and well out of the way if they're smart)

Another thing, I wonder just how many different tribes there were on Neural? I almost seem to forget that Nona came from another tribe as well!

As in most cases, the landing party (not "away team") was composed of the characters who would best serve the dramatic purposes of the story. Spock was the ship's science officer, with expertise in many scientific fields. It's not like the later shows where the first officer serves no real purpose. And, per WNMHGB, the ship's chief medical officer is in charge of "life sciences." So it makes perfect sense for them to be on this mission.

And they had phasers for the same reason they had their phasers and communicators with them on Sigma Iotia II.

Oh, and this thread has been dead for eight years. :wtf:
