Well the censors had a lot to do on this episode already. Bob Justman wrote in his book "Inside Star Trek" that they extended the shower scene on purpose in order to bargain with the censors. He actually claims that they succeeded with their ploy and the part of that scene that they wanted in stayed in which is strange as I have never seen the episode containing the shower scene. It is only (in very, very poor quality) in the blooper reel.
I cannot believe that no better print of that has survived. Maybe someone has at least stills of that scene and - who knows - with modern digital video enhancement one could probably restore the scene into the episode. All just in the interest of honouring the initial creative decision and thus correcting the time-line, of course

No no, it's the bit of psychic ability that everyone in the future has. You can see it in episodes where someone points to the viewscreen and says "LOOK! THERE!" moments before the editor actually cuts in the footage of something appearing.
Yeah, it does, doesn't it? But I like 'Gamesters Of Triskelion''s teaser a lot as well.
^ That could have been cool, seeing the ramifications of Kirk's actions a century later. But it does go to show that TNG in its first season really did try and copy TOS storylines, didn't it?

It has a lot of the more risque moments. Besides the sexual stuff mentioned already, the violence is high. I watched this episode with a casual fan of trek over this summer, and he actually gasped when those guys stabbed Nona at the end.....it's rather shocking, and so quick, it really gets you.
and I agree with whoever said this might have the best teaser of any trek episode.

Wasn't Nona nearly gang raped in this episode before she was killed?

Another thing, I wonder just how many different tribes there were on Neural? I almost seem to forget that Nona came from another tribe as well!

As in most cases, the landing party (not "away team") was composed of the characters who would best serve the dramatic purposes of the story. Spock was the ship's science officer, with expertise in many scientific fields. It's not like the later shows where the first officer serves no real purpose. And, per WNMHGB, the ship's chief medical officer is in charge of "life sciences." So it makes perfect sense for them to be on this mission.
And they had phasers for the same reason they had their phasers and communicators with them on Sigma Iotia II.
Oh, and this thread has been dead for eight years.
