My journey in Deep Space

^ Nothing against Eddington but I would have liked Cal to return with the Maquis.

A personal feud between Sisko and Cal Hudson? I think I preferred feud between Eddington and Sisko, heightened by a sense of bitter, personal betrayal. I liked Cal too much, he seemed like one of the good guys.

"The Maquis Part 2"

"Sisko must join forces with Gul Dukat to stop Hudson and the Maquis from igniting a war between Cardassia and the Federation."

Again the story really took over the episode. Sisko had some great scenes, especially his speech after he spoke to Admiral Nechayev. Dukat, great as usual. He sure has a command presence. I especially liked the final shot of the episode with Sisko sitting at his desk. It was a very cinematic shot, it would have looked great in widescreen.

"The Wire"

"Bashir fights to save Garak from an experimental brain implant which is slowly killing him. In order to do so, Bashir must unravel some of the secrets of the Cardassian's past as an operative."

I didn't really expect this dark side to Garak. He has an intriguing back story but we never got all the answers and I don't know what to believe. Great performance by Andrew Robinson.

That's the story of Garak, all right--he's quite the enigma and all I'll say is I STILL haven't got him pinned down, and I've seen all of the episodes.

"Crossover"

"Kira and Bashir accidentally enter the alternate universe visited by Kirk and crew on the original series, where Bajor is allied with Cardassia and Kira's double is a ruthless tyrant."

The mirror universe is always fun to step in and this episode was no exception. The teaser scene was fun, Bashir is always sticking his foot in his mouth. I really liked how this episode was a direct sequel to TOS "Mirror, Mirror." It gave the episode more weight. It was surprising to see the Klingons given such a strong presence on the station and in the Alliance. I was excited to see Garak hold a position of power on the station. Mirror Kira is hot!

"The Collaborator"

"Kira learns that her lover, Vedek Bareil, may have been the man responsible for betraying a number of slaughtered Bajorans to their Cardassian murderers. Vedek Winn, whose ambitions still know no bounds, is behind the leak."

I hate Vedek Winn. I can not stand her at all, which is a good sign for a villain. I figured she was simply trying to ruin Bareil. Why would she be elected Kai? It seems like no one likes her.

That's the reason I would have liked to see Cal. He's likeable and seems like a good guy. It was easy for Sisko to go bitter on Eddington but with Cal, as he showed in the Maquis, when it came to the pointy end he would hesitate. See how far each could push the other before they really snapped.

Not taking away from Eddington, I enjoyed his role in the series.

I've just watched these over the last week myself, all new to me. It seems stupid to have to say this, but there may be *SPOILERS* in my text.

"Armageddon Game"

"O'Brien and Bashir help two warring races dismantle their deadly weapons, unaware that the aliens intend to execute them and have already informed Deep Space Nine of their deaths."

For a bio weapon that was that strong it was rather easy to find the cure.
I agree, though I got the impression their medical tech level was lower than Starfleet. Bashir is also among the best, and he's been at it for a week.
A solid episode, and I really liked the coda at the end where Miles gets a coffee after noon, to Keiko's surprise.

"Whispers"

"When O'Brien returns from an away mission, he finds that the entire crew is treating him strangely, including his wife and child. He suspects that the crew has been altered somehow, but in fact he's the one who has changed."

I didn't see that one coming at all. Simply a fun episode.

I love this kind of episode. And I love that they didn't make it obvious, a real surprise ending. I thought it might have been a Braga ep but just googled it written by Paul Robert Coyle.
One observation about the O'Briens: they're always eating! They must have more food scenes than any other Star Trek characters.

"Paradise"

"Sisko and O'Brien crash on a planet settled by humans who have rejected technology, led by a charismatic woman who isn't quite honest with her followers about the price for their corner of the galaxy. When she attempts to keep Sisko and O'Brien there, they expose her."

I liked this episode. The idea that technology isn't always better had me thinking. I've just graduated college and I have no idea what I am supposed to do. Maybe it wouldn't be so bad living a simple lifestyle. Sisko was great in this episode. I really looked up to him the entire episode. Great performance from Brooks.

This was classic Trek. It felt very Roddenberry inspired to me. I think it is also addressing totalitarian Communism.

"Shadowplay"

"Odo and Dax visit a planet whose inhabitants are mysteriously disappearing. When they investigate, they learn that most of the people, including a little girl with whom Odo becomes close, are actually holograms."

Again, I really liked this episode. The main story really hit me. I got choked up when Rurigan basically lost his entire life and didn't even seem to care. Odo's speech to him raised all the interesting questions without giving any answers, where I feel a TNG would have given an answer.

Again another small mention of the Dominion, great foreshadowing going on, not as good as Babylon 5 but I feel that B5 was better planned out.

I enjoyed the subplots. I was reminded of the season 3&4 eps of B5, where the subplots purely exist to move characters forward. This seems like a good first step in the eventual serialized story arc that I know DS9 is going to take.
These DS9 episodes have an amazing level of quality, even from S1. Odo and the little girl was very cute.

"Playing God"

"Dax discovers an embryonic universe developing on - and threatening - the station, the same week when she must evaluate a Trill seeking to be joined."

Fascinating look at Trill culture.

I think there was some underlying abortion themes here, although it wasn't parallel or heavyhanded. Good Dax development, though I think I am starting to get tired of her saying "I'm not Kirzon".

"Profit and Loss"

"Quark is reunited with the great love of his life, a Cardassian woman who is now a fugitive. He helps her escape, in a very Casablanca-like story."

Who knew Quark would have a love interest?

There have been a lot of love interests in DS9 so far: Bashir is on the prowl, Dax is breaking balls and hearts all over the station, Jake has a girlfriend, Kira has a love interest, and now Quark. Very unexpected, and surprising that it worked.
And what a beautiful Cardassian woman. Quark done good.

So I'm well into S2 now: where's Nog?

...It seems stupid to have to say this, but there may be *SPOILERS* in my text.

Don't be dense.

Trent is doing his first watching of the series, and made that eminently clear in his original post. And until the last page, everybody contributing to the thread knew well enough to not discuss things that hadn't yet occurred at the point in the series that Trent had worked up to. One member in particular seems to want to continue discussing such things even after a reminder of the fact that the OP still hasn't seen the series that far ahead.

This isn't a difficult concept.

I for one thoroughly enjoy this thread and the ability to see DS9 for the first time again vicariously.

There are an infinite number of other threads that already exist or could easily be created for discussion of events throughout the series. But if ever there were one where such things shouldn't be discussed, it's probably this one...

.

You want to start an argument in here? Over what? You want to call me names and insult me, do it in an IM or TNZ.
I happen to be on the same bus, and thought it would be cool to tag along from time to time.
It does seem silly to put a spoiler alert on a 10 year old TV series.
That's all.

In general, yes.

In a thread specifically about someone's first time through, regarding episodes they haven't seen yet: Absolutely not. Marking spoilers as such (or avoiding them entirely) is just common courtesy in that case.

I'm staying out of this mess.

"Tribunal"

"O'Brien is tortured and tried by a Cardassian court for a crime he knows nothing about. Some last-minute evidence saves him."

Odo kicked some ass in the courtroom. O'Brien gave a good speech about his loyalty and how it had never been questioned. I feel like this might be an underrated episode but I enjoyed it. The Cardassian judicial system was frustratingly fun to watch.

Are you blind? Enough with the spoilers.

Exactly what spoiler did I add?

Well, you mentioned a character who hasn't shown up yet, and subsequent discussion revealed one of DS9's few real "twist" moments. That's not entirely your fault. However, you then mentioned said character again after being asked to take it easy; one might say that the cat was out of the bag at that point, but even the mention could have triggered another response from someone else that would give away more.

Best practice: If you accidentally start in on future events in a newbie thread, drop it like a hot poker when you're reminded, no matter what closing remarks you'd like to add.

^ Fair enough. Should have been more careful not to drop that character's name.

Ohhh yeah, that was utterly creepy! I may think sometimes our justice system lets people off too easy, but that was just horrifying. And Chief Archon Makbar--EEEEEEK!!!
