NFL Football - 2008-09 Season Discussion

Only saw the fourth quarter of the Denver game, and I gotta say: I think I'm looking forward to this season! They were looking great, and it sounds like that wasn't much of a change from the first three quarters. :D

Broncos are looking good, but I think the Raiders could make the second string from the State School for the Blind and Lame look good.

Eddie Royal, the Broncos rookie receiver has more yards and catches than the entire Raiders receiving corps.

Everyone laughed at me when I took Eddie Royal in our Monkey Bar league (it didn't help that he didn't even have a sticker in the fanball.com draft kit). He looked pretty good for a rookie WR.

Loved seeing the Pack win, but that was an ugly game on both sides. I was kind of pissed that I missed the first quarter (golf tourney took waaay longer than it should have), but apparently, I only missed a lot of penalties.

but how much of that was the broncos and how much was the raiders self destructing?

I do hope the Broncs can keep it up, though.

He did indeed. And DeAngelo Hall didn't want to have anything to do with him. Every time he got near Royal, Hall ended up getting beat or taking a stupid penalty.

The only downside from Shanahan's point of view is that Ashley "alligator arms" Lelie caught the first touchdown for the Raiders.

The TD catch that Royal made on the sidee of the end zone was a technical beauty. He looked the ball into his hands and immediately made sure he had both feet in bounds before falling out of bounds. It sounds so matter of fact in describing it here, but watching it made me think this kid may have a very bright future, not only in the physical skills area but in the mental aspects of the game.x`

Yikes: http://nbcsports.msnbc.com/id/26609083/

Vince Young went out on Monday, and when the Titans couldn't get in touch with him, they called the police out of their concerns that he was 'emotionally down'. This is really odd...has anyone else seen injured QBs fall into possible depression like this? And if he is depressed, I hope he gets the help he needs.

---

On a non-related note, I wish to apologize for my statements on Sunday - I wasn't directing them at anyone in here. I have just been frustrated with the constant media attention and arrogance of the Patriots as a whole, and I'll not be sorry to see them struggle this season. Sucks for Tom Brady, but the guy is quite popular, and is nearly guaranteed a commentator position after his playing days are done, so I'm not as sorry for him as I would be for most QBs.

Well, it is nice to know some things never change...

I am looking forward to watching Royal this season. I too hope the game is a sign of good things to come. The Broncos have always had a bit of dependence on the self-destruction of their opponent. ;)

Is Vince Young going cukoo or is it just me?

It's not just you. He seems to be depressed and by his own admission, he's not committed to playing football. The Titans are much better off with Kerry Collins.
I wouldn't know who to believe in this, because this morning VY's saying he's committed to the Titans and to football. In all seriousness, what kind of a home life did he have growing up? He strikes me as being rather unprepared for the pressures and celebrity of the most high profile position in American professional sports.

I think he got very lucky by being part of a fantastic team at Texas for a few years. That whole team was what got them the National Championship, not Vince Young in particular. His performance with the Titans has shown that like several college QBs (especially those from Florida), he's simply not capable of handing the NFL. He's not the first and he won't be the last. The difference here is that the Titans, at least, seem to be greatly concerned about him and they called the police when they couldn't find him. That indicates to me that he's got bigger issues than most QBs.

My gut feeling is that when he was with Texas, VY was for real. It's true those teams had just sick talent, but he was special. In the BCS Championship game, he really was the difference maker, and SoCal really didn't seem to have a compete answer for him. Problem is, his kind of game does not translate well to the pros. His running can help, but when everyone in the league is overall bigger and stronger AND faster... that tends to mute your advanages at the college level. I don't like making the comparison, but Micke Vick can attest to that. In the end, it's got to be the mental approach. How many QBs ruled in college and couldn't figure out how to unlock the safe in the pros? Physically gifted but mentally not able to handle the complexity and speed of the pro game with its myriad defensive answers to increasingly complex offensive schemes?

I would love for VY to be able to sit down with Donovan McNabb and see if he can learn from someone who has been through the wringer. Fans, teammates, injuries, spotlight pressure, a change in style.... and McNabb has come back apparently.

If the implication of that statement is that Texas wins the national championship with another quarterback at the helm, I'll have to disagree. Young was the clear difference between a Texas team that USC handles with relative ease, and one that wins the title.

Neroon's take is quite right. It's my firm opinion that Pat White is our next Andre Ware.

I was there that night. USC hung 38 points on the vaunted Texas defense.

Vince Young won that game, no question about it. I saw it with my own eyes.

Have I said lately how much I hate you for that, for eye-witnessing one of the greatest championship games ever?

^

Ok, I'm probably wrong about it. I remember actively avoiding the bowl season in 2005 after South Carolina's disastrous showing in the Indepdence Bowl.

And it's unfortunate just how far Vince Young's fallen - his therapist says he was definitely talking about suicide. Is it possible that he was always the 'golden boy' both in high school and at Texas and thus never had to deal with this kind of pressure?

Frankly, we shouldn't know that. A therapist should be better able to keep her piehole appropriately shut than a worried mother. You inform the police if you believe the situation critical, but the guy's football coach—someone who's going to be grilled by the media? Give me a freakin' break. This gal should lose her license to shrink.

I think it's pretty apparent such is the case, unless all indications are just way off base.
