Marky Mark (of funky bunch fame) as Max Payne

Sephiroth

Vice Admiral

what next, Toby Keith as the master chief? how do i not hear of something like this before now? this is gonna suck

I guess if you don't follow movie news then its new to you. I saw an ad over the weekend during football, not sure where else they might have played some Max Payne ads.

I knew of this back at the start of summer when the movie was in post production.

I'm not a gammer so I have no pre-concieved notions of how the movie should look or how close the characters will resemble their gamming origins. I like Mark Whalberg though so this is on my short list of Fall movies to see.

He seems okay in the trailer.

Same here, seemed like a natural fit.

I have a question about the trailer. Now it's been a LONG time since I've played Max Payne, but the trailer gave off a serious sci-fi vibe (IMHO) that I don't remember being in the game. But maybe my memory is just bad, that was many years and 100s of games ago when I last played it.

More horror than scifi, the game was. It did have that one guy who went all floaty. "THE FLESH OF FALLEN ANGELS!"

Max Payne is to video games what the Watchmen is to comic books. It goes beyond it's medium into pure art. So far, I've been impressed by the previews. If the movie is good, it remains to be seen. Wahlberg, well, he was awesome in The Departed so I'll give him a chance.

Wow, I just don't remember much about it. I would have sworn it was a straight up crime shooter. I remember the story had a lot of plot twists, I just don't remember the horror/sci-fi angle at all.

Try watching the trailer first before you make comments like that :wtf: He looks good in it and the movie looks like a rare gem from the pool of video game to movie. The Sci fi/horror elements were great in the game so looking forward to the movie.

The "Horror Elements" were drug trips or really bad dreams.

It's been a while since Mark Wahlberg's been Marky Mark. Did you make these same posts when The Italian Job, The Departed, Boogie Nights, Three Kings, Invincible, etc. came out?

It would be like saying, "How could the Indianapolis Colts possibly win any games with that quarterback from Newman High School?"

Now that you mention it, I do remember the drug trips.

Since Uwe Boll rips every video game movie that isn't his, what kind of wacky and zany comments do you expect him to belittle Max Payne with?

Max Payne is to video games what the Watchmen is to comic books.
This question isn't for Thrall cause I believe that he believes this statement to be equatable. Its why he posted it afterall. I'm asking for multiple answers from gammers "is this equatable to you or seen that way in the gamming community?"

I haven't owned a game system since '97 and it was a Super Nintendo.

Is Max Payne a story and character that turned the idea of gamming on its head?
Did Max Payne cause a self-evaluation among fans and creators as to how the industry is seen?

Bottom line: Was Max Payne revolutionary and if so are its effects still evident?

No offense, CC, but wow! :wtf: It's just a video game.

Not offended. But if one is going to make a statement like that then those are fair questions to ask.

Do you recall the number of Sci-Fi movies that try to brand themselves as "the next Star Wars", Fifth Element comes to mind.

Kevin Garnett, Kobe Bryant and LeBron James all got hailed as "The Next Michael Jordan"

Eragon and now Twilight were/are being branded as the next LOTR/Potter for the novel to film world.

I don't see why you'd take issue for simply seeking clarification of the statement. Is it hyperbole by one or is this a legit view held by the industry and/or fan base?

If I were a gammer I wouldn't ask, I'd know. Just as I knew Fifth Element wasn't the next Star Wars and as good as Garnett and Kobe are they aren't quite Jordan.

Best I can say is that I've never seen another game quite like Max Payne. I mean, I'm sure the Matrix games had bullet time, but they probably didn't make their cutscenes look like graphic novels.

It wasn't the first game to mesh story and gameplay so well, but it was one of the early ones. The idea that a game could tell a story just as well as a movie was still fairly new back in 2001.

It's hard to answer this, because I have no basis for comparison: I'm not a comic-book fan, and I haven't read The Watchmen.

But I don't think it's accurate to say that Max Payne 'revolutionized' the FPS genre. (It's not even an FPS, strictly speaking)

For one thing, Max Payne and its sequel are practically sui generis. A truly revolutionary game spawns numerous imitators, the way Half-Life and Halo and Grand Theft Auto III have.

Max Payne stands alone.

Hmm,

Well I guess I don't understand the context of the issue, the question at hand then. I guess it was the "self evaluation among fans" that made me react like :wtf:. (EDIT: And by that I simply mean I'm not sure I see ANY video game as a vehicle for self evaluation.)

As I said, I didn't mean offense, it just struck me as odd statement, but as I said I didn't fully understand the reference (still don't I guess.)

No harm, no foul. (I hope :) )
