Despite the majority voting for the shorter title, I've decided to use Star Trek: The Original Series in my list. I don't buy the argument that it's an unofficial title used only between fans. This title is on all the DVD covers and the DVDs themselves, even the Fan Collectives. It's used in Star Trek Encyclopedia, Memory Alpha, Memory Beta and Wikipedia (before my edit). I've made it a policy to use retronyms in favour of original names and list stuff the way they are named in wiki articles when in doubt.

Thanks anyway guys.

Both and neither.

For conventional use, I say TOS on TrekBBS and "the original Star Trek" IRL.

The "purist" in me prefers just "Star Trek."

But "Star Trek: The Original Series" is a more useful title in most cases because it reduces ambiguity and confusion. With the release of Abrams' film next year, this distinction will become even more useful.

When talking about the first show, I call it Star Trek...whether it's among fans or non-fans. That's it's name.

When talking about the larger Trek universe, I call it simply Trek.

When you ask someone which Star Trek they prefer do they replay by naming an episode from TOS or by naming a series? Even more, they may answer with a movie. I don't see TOS as an insult to the original series. It is an acknowledgement to something that has spawned many children and now needs to be differentiated from them.

The fact that some people would actually take umbrage about referring to it as TOS (or even calling the other series Star Trek) is petty and laughable.

It's the internet age. People can now search for things to be insulted about. ;)

The show is called Star Trek.
Star Trek: The Original Series is a retronym-a term made up at a later time to differentiate something from a later incarnation. It is like saying "rotary phone." Before touch tone dialing, a rotary phone was just a phone.

In the pre-Internet days of Usenet and GEnie, I distinctly recall fan attempts to push for the use of STC ("Star Trek Classic", inspired by "Coke Classic") and STA (for "Star Trek Animated"), long before the eventual popularization of TOS and TAS.

But re your labeling quandary, it seems unnecessary to expand to "The Original Series" when you already know what it means.

I don't really know any Star Trek fans, so this problem of nomenclature doesn't really come up. It's the only Trek show my girlfriend is really familiar with, for instance. I just call it Star Trek. Should any further clarification be needed, then I would add "the proper one, you know, with Captain Kirk."

Anyway, what about the Animated Series? The title seen on the screen is also simply Star Trek and that's what IMDb calls it. However, Wikipedia, Memory Alpha, StarTrek.com and TV.com all call it Star Trek: The Animated Series.

Again, if clarification is needed, I call that one "Cartoon Star Trek", which is what the BBC announcers used to call it in the seventies.

That is a good point-the animated series just says "Star Trek" in the title. It seems to me that that was the first time point that new terms were required to differentiate between different Star Trek shows.
