2008 Olympics!

The tiebreaker was tantamount to flipping a coin. They should have just done that...takes less time and is more transparent. It seems that this brave new world of the post-2004 "revised" judging system isn't so great either.

Um No. Not even close. The third tiebreaker essentially gives the gold to the gymnast with the smaller standard of deviation in the 4 middle scores. It's not even close mathematically to flipping a coin.

If the scores were objectively assigned, I might agree with you, but given how subjective they clearly are, the notion of having three significant figures after the decimal point is absurd. Thus, the tiebreaker essentially comes down to noise in the signal and is effectively random.

 I didn't say that. I championed the weighting system!
I meant the concept that was raised in the post I quoted, that silver and bronze were just losers, and it should be won/didn't win. Possible my pyramid quoting was confusing, have edited to clarify.

Thank you for clarifying. The original nested comments were unclear.

the IOC keeps insisting that it's a competition between individuals, not nations. So I guess we're stuck with everybody using the metric that gives them the advantage.

Yeh, of course. The US uses 'total medals' because it usually tops that one, we use 'most golds' because for once our gold count is respectable, Slovenia uses 'per capita medals' because it tops that one ;) etc etc.
And I'd love someone from the IOC to explain why, if it's a competition between individuals, why everyone comes in country teams and gets a flag and anthem when they win...
Actually we're quite happy with our total medals. I posted that medals per capita article 'cause I thought it was entertaining, especially where the journalist calls Slovenia a kumquat of a country. :D

I think both Carly and Andrea though small looked no way underage. They certainly can perform as gracefully as Nastia did in these games. I mean some of women in gymnastic are naturally short which gives them an advantage. I was just arguing that being underage and small isn't a clear cut advantage because of the experience and nerve factor. The sooner China realize this the better. Though personally I like Karolyi's idea of an open competition.

But China won't realize this, since they won team gold in womens and the uneven bars gold. I disagree with Bela, if it were open competition, countries like China and Romania would be putting even more pressure on younger girls whose bodies aren't developed, young girls who'll be pressured to keep out of puberty as long as possible. It's just not good for prepubescent girls to do physical training at the strenuous level of olympic skills in this sport. Bela would compete with 12 and 13 year olds if he could get away with it, that old blowhard. The higher age levels are much better for the female gymnasts. The sport needs more Shawns and Nastias. I just wish the IOC wasn't afraid of China. The biggest news agency in the country seemed to think He Kexin was 13 last November. So did the Chengdou Sports Bureau but no, they're both wrong and a passport is right.

You'll notice, I have no problem with Chinese men kicking ass. They're eligible to compete, so it's all good. The best men won.

:guffaw:

Someone didn't cut the mic of the announcers quick enough on CNBC during this (great) USA v Japan softball game. He clearly said on the break to commercial: "Man, I tell ya my bladder is gonna..."

Please, I hope someone will be able to YouTube this.

I was about to ask if any one else watched the BMX racing on the Olympics but it seems some one beat me to it.

Kyle Bennett dislocated his shoulder and barley finished, wonder if he will race the next round. The other Americans did better though so all three made it to next round.

It's pretty neat that they have BMX at the summer Olympics. I think it is the first X-Games style sport at the summer Olympics right? If it does pretty good I wonder if they will allow other X-Games style sports in.

I remember when snowboarding was added to the Winter Olympics - one of the British commentators (Steve Cram, the former middle distance athlete) for the half-pipe event was totally perplexed by it. He couldn't understand why it was a judged event and not a straight race.

He wouldn't shut up about it, either. He kept moaning and moaning about it being a judged event, and therefore pointless. Nobody bothered to point out that there are many judged disciplines in sport (gymnastics, diving, etc.) and that snowboard racing is a totally separate event....

:D

The British guy's on (from Manchester) - just did a beautiful inner crescent to the Mexican's head, and you could see the Mexican's helmet quiver with the impace. Which should have meant two points.

But instead the Chinese judge gave him a half-point warning! WTF!? Is this some fucking political voting shit like at Eurovision. It's a fucking disgrace! Oh look, they've exchanged kicks to the body but only the Mexican got a point! The Brit gets him the head again but the corner judges are apparently asleep!

I've never seen such blatant political scoring since, er... Well, the 2004 Athens Olympics, actually.

Bleh.

Germany Vs Afghanistan now. The commentator promises us lots of double and triple kicks.

So far they've hugged once.

OK, this is weird scoring (I should mention that three out of the four judges have to simultaneously press the same button for a point to be registered - it's very prone to failure) - they've both let rip at last and landed kicks and the judges aren't giving either of them anything!

Doubly weird as they're doing mutually-destructive flying kicks now. Good spinning too looks like one helicopter kick (not actually advisable in competition). Best fight so far tonight, though the Afghan's tendency to make a raised fist gesture every time he thinks he got a point (usually the judges don't agree) is getting annoying - makes me want the German to win just for that.

The commentators are now going on about the battle for the back seat on the bus, rather than the match. Are they on crack or something?

And the Afghan won, despite the German kicking him all over the hall in the last round. Ludicrous.

Benin Vs Thailand now - a pretty exciting match but I keep finding my eyes drawn to the statuesque and leggy blonde ref! And being annoyed by the commentators' increasingly humourous pronunciation of the Benin fighter's name (which they make sound more and more as "Obi-Jobby")

Then I got called back to bed. Just got up and its the semi finals for the women - better bouts now, though they're still holding back and being too cautious.

Afghan vs Spaniard and they're good, but both annoying. The Afghan's still prancing about every time he thinks he's scored, and the Spaniard is still obviously faking injuries to lure him into a false sense of security.

If you want to know how daft the scoring system is - the Afghan did a flying kick that knocked the Spaniard clean out of the ring, and the corner judges still didn't react quick enough for it to register! He won anyway in the end, and deservedly so.

Finally for today:
What a fucking disgrace!

Dominican Republic Vs Mexico, and the local crowd (with no home fighter to cheer) are chanting for Mexico all through the first round. Now, it goes to sudden death, and the Dominican guy is going all acrobatic, aggressive and vicious. Helicopter kicks across the floor, jumping, flying kicks, you name it. The Mexican does sod all. Still no points given from the daft electronic scoring system, so it goes to a committee decision by the corner judges and ref.

Now, the taekwondo way is that spirit is the guiding factor here- the braver, more aggressive and more technically proficient fighter wins.

So, do they give it to the guy who's having a go, landing hits, and going all out, as even the commentators (the more sensible of whom is the Scottish national coach) note? Or do they give it to the bloke who's country a few thousand locals in the hall were chanting five minutes ago?

Take a wild guess.

I hate to be a "Monday morning quarterback" but this really brings the tone down after the excellent fair victory of the Chinese girl in the womens' 49kg Gold immediately previous.

They really need to have some sort of sensor in the body armour that registers points, rather than rely on three out of four observers being awake and all having exactly the same level of hand-eye co-ordination and exactly the same reaction times.

Is that a burqa the woman from Bahrein is wearing in the 200m race there??
edit: oh well, she didn't qualify for the final anyway.

Yes, athletes from Muslim countries have been wearing burqas in various events (primarily track & field). Some have also been wearing full body uniforms.

Men's basketball: US routs Australia 116-85

When you score 116 points, win by 31, and your top scorer only has 25 points for the game... that is total domination. On top of that, it was against the one team that has been able to put up a fight against this US "Redeem Team".

Next up: Friday night against Argentina or Greece.

No way Australia is as tough an opponent as any of the European teams (edit: +Argentina) still left in the competition. It looks like the USA will win this time, but I doubt it will be such a cakewalk in the semi and final.

Bronze for Natasha Danvers of GB in the 400m hurdles, great result there. :)

Usain Bolt was just... amazing.

Say what you will, but it remains that the Aussies are the only team to be competitive against the US. On top of that, going into this the Aussies had the front line size and 3-pt shooting the experts said could give the US a real fight.

Spain had no reason to show everything they've got against the USA and Argentina and Lithuania haven't played against the USA yet. The USA were impressive against Greece though, I'll grant you that. And I've stated already that I believe the US team takes this event seriously enough to win it this time. ;)

Are they showing taekwondo on NBC? Lonemagpie is making it sound more interesting than it usually is to me when I actually watch the real thing. :) Maybe I will give it another try.

I'm biased, though, as it's a martial art I practice...

Olympic Taekwondo is a very different beast than regular sparring, and generally less interesting to watch unless you know what you're watching for. It did get more flashy today, though, than it did in the whole of the Athens Olympics

Your best bet for Taekwondo is CNBC or MSNBC between 12am-6am, I saw some of a match yesterday around 1am on of those two last night. Check their website for coverage information.

If it's the same sort of scarf she wore in the opening ceremonies, it's a hijab, not a burqa. I can't imagine any of the women being allowed to wear a burqa because it would restrict her vision too much. Plus, they're bulkier and she'd be much more likely to trip.
