2008 Olympics!

^ Yeah, but everything changes (and improves). From shoes that sprinters use, to bikes that cyclists use. That's just how it is.

That's true. The gymnasts can vault farther and better now since they changed from a vaulting horse to a more secure, specially designed, larger table. A more advanced, improved design.

If Phelps win the 8 gold medals at these games then he'll break the Spitz record only by one. Spitz also broke the WR in each of 7 gold medals he won at the 72 games. Lets not get carried away here. What Phelps is doing is absolutely amazing but it has essentially been done before.

Moving away from Phelps, GB got another silver today, for Emma Pooley in the time trial. :D And we've got a lot of crews in rowing finals - one of my friends who is a cox was once coached by Tom Stallard who rows in the Eights, as well as a guy who rowed with Pinsent in the Boat Race.

I wasn't around in 72, so I would consider this awfully special.

I was around in '72. It's special. Unfortunately, Spitz got overshadowed because of that unfortunate incident during the second week of the Munich olympics. :(

We also have a couple of boats in the finals (men's double skulls and men's four) which is pretty awesome.

^Well done to them, there have been a lot of good crews competing this year.

I've got my fingers crossed that our men's coxless four picks up the Gold this year for the third games running.

So did Australia. We're also going well in the sailing at the moment too.

Anyone see the Mens and Womens Gymnastics finals? Both US teams did well. I was more inspired by the mens team. To me that shows what the Olympics should be about. The underdogs doing their best and being happy for it.

The ladies? The girls on the team behaved well. I'm sorry they were disappointed. They had two huge mistakes, lower start values than the Chinese girls not to mention competing on their rivals' home turf. I hope they didn't buy the media hype of Gold or nothing. They had great moments. Shawn Johnson and Nastia Liukin were great. I liked the classical lines of Nastia Liukin. Womens Gymnastics needs more competitors like her.

As for the Chinese, they did the difficulty they set out to do. This pays big dividends in Gymnastics. At last years World Championships they missed and lost to the USA. This year they didn't miss their routines and it paid off. Were there underage gymnasts on the squad? IMHO YES. That being said, the coaches on the US team should quit harping on it an move on. It will just reflect badly on the athletes. Shawn, Nastia, Jonathan, and Sasha are probably ready to move on to the All Around and Event Finals. The coaches should be as well.

I'm going to start a thread in the General Trek thread about the Olympics in the 24th 1/2 century. I'd like everyone's input.

In the Trek Fan Fiction. There's an entry called "Let the Games Begin" in July 2008's contest by yours truly. It didn't win but, it was fun to write.:rommie:

^But the probably have changed the surface many times. Which is more equivalent, given that 50m is still 50m in the pool.

^But they control the water temperature, the amount of chemicals used and variety, the amount of ripple or chop (even within some pools), the quality and surface of the blocks... nothing that would make a huge change, but that helps.

And, the drugs now are less traceable. :P

According to last night's report, the pool was deepened to nine feet over the standard seven and widened by two lanes, thus cutting the resistance from waves against the swimmers and likely lowering their times.

^ So the surface changed, the suits changed, the technology changed -- it doesn't cheat what the athletes are doing. It also doesn't cheapen the world records -- sports technology changes and it's why ESPN has been able to produce millions of "who's the best [insert athletic position here]?" segments. Spitz's experienced this in his attempted comeback in '92. His times were as good as or better than his '72 times, but he was way behind in reaching the qualifying times for the trials -- cause techniques and technology had changed. An aside, I've heard the pool at the University of Texas has a similar build -- so this is hardly as revolutionary as people are saying.

They're showing beach volleyball, I'm confused. I thought this was the Michael Phelps' Swim Meet -- you mean there are other games going on simultaneously???

Oh, man, Libby Trickett is lucky! She was initially knocked out of from the Women's 100 meter freestyle, but then the judges ruled that Pang Jiaying (who won the second semi-final) had a false start and is therefore disqualified. Ouch!

What a race in mens 100m freestyle. Sullivan could have won it, but congrats to the Frenchman.

Another gold medal for the Australian women. A gold medal every day so far for our women!! :D
