It's definitely not the first time a movie has had 3&6 am showings. Phantom Menace definitely did, and I think Revenge of the Sith did too. Anyway, I doubt those early morning showings accounted for *that* large a percentage of the opening day gross, as there were plenty of theaters with the movie that didn't have such showings. And most people going to 3/6am showings were going to find a theater where they could watch it opening day somewhere anyway.

I think the $64,000 question now is: "How quickly will The Dark Knight hit the $300M mark?" Will it hit it in a shorter amount of time than Indy 4?
Deadline Hollywood is reporting that TDK had such a strong Sunday that the opening is set to be even bigger than the initial estimates: $158.3 million. 
Even if it's as uber-frontloaded as Spider-Man 3 it would still make $350 million domestic. If, as seems likely, it holds up better then it would have a real shot at $400 million.

My son and I caught it Sunday night at 7:30pm, so count us as well as the rest of the theater for being responsible for the updated numbers. What, if any, major competition does TDK still have to deal with? I don't expect the X-Files move to be able to compete...is there anything big enough left before school starts back?
The Mummy: Tomb of the Dragon Emperor. Highly anticipated, and has a fanbase from the first two films. It should be interesting to see if The Dark Knight can hold the top spot that week. While I love the X-Files, The Dark Knight will still be number one.
I doubt The Dark Knight's 3rd weekend will be able to beat Mummy's opening weekend. But Dark Knight might be able to reclaim the #1 spot the following weekend (Aug. 8-10) if The Mummy drops hard enough.
I have no *tingly* interest in the X-Files. I absolutely loved the show from the first episode onward, but I'm just *meh* about this installment. I will be surprised if it places higher than The Dark Knight on its opening weekend, meaning if The Dark Knight is at #3 then X-Files opens at #2.
X-Files is opening this coming weekend, July 25. No way it opens higher than Dark Knight. Dark Knight will be #1 on July 25-27. It's the weekend after that that Dark Knight will likely fall to The Mummy.
TDK will easily - very easily! - hold #1 against The X-Files and Step Brothers next weekend. The Mummy 3 should then take the #1 spot the following weekend, although it's a case of a sequel where I think they've waited a little too long. It'll do well, but not as well as the last Mummy film.
Pineapple Express could take #1 the weekend after that, or it could disappoint - hard to say. That'll be a test of Seth Rogen's drawing power. Then you've got Star Wars: The Clone Wars and Tropic Thunder battling it out.

Of course I do. That's why, in the very message you just quoted, I wrote "It's the weekend after that that Dark Knight will likely fall to The Mummy." And why, in an earlier message in this thread, I wrote "I doubt The Dark Knight's 3rd weekend will be able to beat Mummy's opening weekend."
By its 3rd weekend sure it will. Mummy has a fanbase and TDK will have, like IM or Indy, had the repeat viewers that were giving it those two weekends of high holdover. Mummy 3 reigns easily on that weekend.
Again, though, I do think Dark Knight would have an outside chance at taking back the #1 spot in its 4th weekend (Mummy's 2nd weekend). Suppose Mummy opens to $60 million, and then drops 60% to $24 million in its 2nd weekend. I don't think it's impossible for Dark Knight to beat that in its 4th weekend (and Pineapple Express might not beat that either).

The 7:00 and 8:00 shows at all my local theatres were sold out last night -- I tried to get tickets after work with hours to spare and failed. I've actually never seen these theatres so busy on a Sunday. Past Batman films have done respectable but not massive box office in foreign territories, but it looks like TDK will turn that around. Variety reports that it made $40 million in just 20 territories, and it has yet to open in most of the major markets. Batman Begins made $166 million international; TDK looks set to top that by a very substantial margin. TDK opened to $13.1 million in Australia. That's more than Batman Begins made in its entire run Australian run ($12.2 million). No doubt Heath Ledger proved to be a major draw in Australia in particular, but TDK also scored very impressive openings in other territories, too. It looks like it's a lock for $600 million worldwide, and could possibly go over $700 million.

I'd estimate there were approximately 75-120 people (more towards the latter) and there were two screens showing at this particular theater. I bought our tickets an hour before showtime and the auditorium was opened 20 minutes before the start of the film due to the amount of cleanup from the previous show's audience.
