Re: What Will TDK's Final (Domestic) Box Office Take Be?

Ok. I hate that the thread gets posted and then you have to put the poll on and post it again. It's quite awkward.

This is intense! I would have never imagined The Dark Knight would do this well! I mean, yeah, I had some pretty high hopes, most of them were squashed by members of this board ( ;) ) but damn.

I think it has a very good chance now of surpassing $400 million. I think it's going to be the highest-grossing film of 2008 and dethrone Spider-Man as the highest-grossing superhero film of all time.

However, though, I can understand why people would want to see this over and over. I've seen the film three times during the weekend (something I don't think I've ever done for a film) and I am almost salivating to see the film again!

The BOM board users are saying if its pace holds like this, and it could, all through the weekend then TDK could be at $300m by Sunday. They then are calling for a cool down but yeah its almost a lock now for $400m with this crazy start.

A first for a Batman movie.

True, though, adjusted for inflation, Batman (1989) made more than $400 million.

Showbiz Data has the Tuesday estimates up: $20.87 million for TDK for a total so far of $203.77 million. That's the second biggest Tuesday ever and the biggest non-opening day Tuesday ever. It also sets a new record - five days - for fastest to $200 million. The previous record was held by Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest, which made $200 million in eight days.

I could see it break $450 million just because every single person whom I have talked to who has seen it is planning on seeing it at least one more time. I think there is a high rewatchability factor and continually good word of mouth for TDK, much more than any movie I can think of recently...

Absolutely. I've seen the film three times and I am itching to see the film again. Most people who would normally see this type of film once that I know have seen it at least twice.

Wednesday take for TDK: $18.52 million for a total of $222.29 million so far.

Update with actuals from BOM: $18,377,288 for a total of $222,150,806 so far.

Edit to add: The X-Files is reportedly tracking to open in the high teens. Hopefully it'll do better than that.

I think X-Files opening to $16-18 million is probably about right. If it could break $20 mil, then I would be surprised. But I will be there this weekend, so we'll see if my ticket pushes it over the line... :)

TDK made $16,464,405 on Thursday, bringing its total to $238,615,211. That Thursday number sets it up with an excellent chance to beat the current record second weekend of $72.17 million set by Shrek 2, as well as to smash the record for fastest to $300 million.

I heard on the radio this morning that TDK has made more money in a week than BB did in its entire theatrical run.

So how long will it take for TDK to break $400mil assuming it does?

According to an estimate deadlinehollywooddaily.com it may break $300million this weekend. Beating the previous fastest to $300 million by 6 days.

Deadline Hollywood is reporting that TDK made $76 million this weekend, for a total of $311 million today. That smashes the $300 million record and, I believe, is also the largest second weekend ever.

^^^
Yep, it's a new record for the biggest second weekend (Shrek 2 previously held the record) and a new record for fastest to $300 million (10 days, as opposed to the previous record of 16 days set by Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest).

Box Office Mojo has the estimate at $75.63 million for a total so far of $314.245 million. It'll become the highest grossing film of the year in domestic box office after its Monday take. Its weekend drop is 52.3%, which is extraordinary considering how massive its opening was and indicates that it should have great legs. $500 million domestic is a possibility (it would be only the second film in history to go over that mark in unadjusted terms).

In other news:

* The X-Files: I Want to Believe made an estimated $10.2 million.

* Hancock joined the $200 million domestic club.

* The Incredible Hulk finally limped past the domestic gross of Ang Lee's Hulk.

Too bad for Warner. Makes you wonder how much The Dark Knight could've really made with Ashton Kutcher as Batman, Freddie Prinze Jr. as Joker and Uwe Boll as the director! :)

TDK made $65.6 million in 43 international markets this weekend, bringing its international gross to $126.3 million. It has now made $440.5 million worldwide.

I've been away at San Diego Comic Con and in an isolated bubble of sorts. On the ride home from the airport last night I heard the news snippet of it breaking the $300m in the fastest time. If I had a dollar for every person dressed as a Joker at Comic Con I'd easily have $100 or more. They were all over.

Congrats to TDK, Warners and Nolan. I've only seen it twice and am fine with that. IMO its not $10 worthy past that. It has no action scenes so spectacular that they demand I resee them. Its a story based thriller and I can wait to reexperience the great performances in TDK on DVD this December.

Its going to be at $400m in the next 2-3 weekends for sure. Warners with Bale in the lead has to be excited about its other Bale lead franchise restart with Terminator Salvation. I saw a 4-5 minute montage of footage at Comic Con and my interest level is officially at CANT WAIT. The whole cast minus Bale was there. Bale was in Hong Kong doing PR for TDK.
