Picard Season 5 Question ?

Jax

Admiral
Admiral
I have been rewatching TNG over the past several weeks and I have finished the 5th season and notice that Picard got some sort of jacket this season and stopped wearing his normal uniform for quite a lot of episodes. The previous seasons seemed a little more anal in the military part of Starfleet and this just seems to jump out this season, I was wondering did Stewart ask to wear something different ? and I can't remember him wearing the same thing in later seasons though might be wrong there ? I defintly know other captians didn't in the other shows.

Admiral/Captain Kirk wore a vest under his military jacket in The Wrath of Khan and Generations.

Captain Sisko wore a vest underneath his uniform, featured in Seasons 5,6,7 episodes of DS9 (Which Picard was also scene wearing in First Contact and Insurrection.).

It was prevalent in Season 5, not so much in season 6 and only about 2 or 3 times during season 7.

As for the Different uniform itself, I liked it. I t felt to me like a little "Captain's Privelidge" type thing. He's the Captain so he gets to chosse what type of uniform he wants to wear, unlike everybody else.

In the TNG Companion, I believe there's a mention that Stewart wanted a different look. I liked the few times where he just had the gray under-uniform on without the jacket, like when he was relaxing with a book in the ready room.

IIRC, Stewart as the Captain and lead actor on the series wanted to stand out from the rest of the cast much like Shatner did when he wore the green wraparound.

i always thought that it was put in because the writers didnt want him to freeze without a jacket and then it stuck.

If you're suggesting it was an ego trip, I've seen no evidence at all for that, it seems to have just been created as a bit of visual interest for the uniforms.

From Memory Alpha:
The captain's jacket was designed by Robert Blackman to make Captain Picard stand out from the rest of his crew, at the suggestion of Patrick Stewart. In its first appearance, the uniform would feature leather-like shoulders, however in all other appearances, the uniform seems to be made of cotton, with suede used for the burgundy division color.

It was created specifically to make Stewart stand out, that's why he was the only one who wore the uniform. If the jacket was just for a bit of visual interest, than other cast members would've had a similar uniform or guest captains would've also worn it. The evidence is in the episodes-- Stewart is the only one who ever wore it, no one else.

And what's wrong with Stewart wanting to stand-out? And it wouldn't be the first time he'd expressed an "ego trip" as you put it. After all, in the third season, Stewart advocated for Picard to be more active rather than staying on the bridge all the time. Regardless of whether or not it was an "ego trip," Stewart had a good point. In Trek, the captain, as the series lead, should stand-out and be an active participant in the action and not blend into the background.

Ah, the Captain Commando uniform. :)

Have to admit, it had more functionality than the regular uniform, in that the jacket could be removed when desired. Made a lot of sense.

Commando style would be Picard in "Starship Mine". :D
