Continuing to Discover Doctor Who

I on the other hand never warmed to the first Romana, while I loved Lalla's cute perkiness. There was some real onscreen chemistry between her and the Doctor. Especially in season 18.

Okay, well, I can't exactly go into details about how this happened. Nevertheless...

The Deadly Assassin

Pretty dang cool. One of the things I'm loving about actually getting to watch this show (and largely in the order of production) is seeing how the mythology of the universe grew over the years. And this story definitely gives more than ever before. I was excited to see the Time Lords in "The War Games", and I was excited to see them again here; it gives us a chance to notice how very alien the Doctor is, even to his own people. I think that's the thing I appreciated most about it, and also getting a chance to see a story with the Master in it--but I feel I really should have watched something of his from the Jon Pertwee era. I wanted to watch "Terror of The Autons", but the library's copy is lost and I couldn't find it anywhere else... until I started typing this and managed to locate a place I can watch it. :p

So. Since I also noticed that this was the first time it is ever stated that Time Lords may only have thirteen incarnations, I thought it might be interesting to speculate as to just what might (or should) happen when the Doctor himself reaches the end of his regeneration cycle. I know that there are various ways we're shown for Time Lords (ie. the Master) to extend beyond this, but they seem rather cruel; taking over a non-Gallifreyan's body? I have a few ideas of my own (and even a whole bunch of premises for what the Thirteenth Doctor would be like), but I might save them until I hear people answer this question: Do you think the Doctor should die at the end of the Thirteenth's era (and thus end the show), or should there be some rigmarole that explains how he can continue on?

Well...

The Time Lords offered the Master a new regenerative cycle in The Five Doctors, so in theory were they to come back then they could easily do the same...

Terror of The Autons

Stepping back in time slightly, I was looking forward to seeing the first story with the Master, despite it also featuring the Nestene who hadn't really impressed me in "Spearhead From Space". They haven't totally redeemed themselves, but I enjoyed this story much better than their first appearance. And Roger Delgado is a fine villain; I can see why so many people love him. It's hard to think of anything else to say, really...

Yeah, great stuff is Terror. Barry Letts rejigs the format slightly, bringing in Jo and the Master as foils for Pertwee's slightly changed Doctor. They all seem to gel instantly, givin for me one of the most entertaining (aside from a few turkeys) periods in the programme's history.

Season seven is probably my favourite of the original series, but the slightly less gown-up eight to eleven are great fun.

To me, Terror is where Pertwees Doctor really kicks in. His first season just tried to hard to be serious sci-fi and to me was always kind of dry. The Master and Jo brought the fun back to the show.

Personally, I found Jo to be a bit annoying in her first appearance; hopefully I'll warm up to her the more I see of her.

Jo is my least favorite companion. Worse than Rose, worse than Adric, worse than Peri. She never listens to The Doctor. She never trusts him. Half the time she's the reason for why The Doctor and herself are the newest scrape. Dumb as a rail. I couldn't strangle her at times.

Okay, I'm done. Sorry about the rant.

Oh I don't know. I always found Jo to be loveable as hell, even if she was a bit dim sometimes.

And like the Brig once said. All Pertwee's Doctor needed was someone to hand him testubes and tell him how brilliant he is. Jo filled that role quite nicely. :)

She never trusts him.

I don't think that's fair. She trusts him implicitly, but sometimes (well, usually) her curiosity gets the better of her. It's a shame her talents of escapology were rarely shown, but she was great in The Sea Devils.

granted ive only seen her once or twice (one of them was her exit) but I really enjoyed Jo.

anyways this seems the best thread to mention this, a couple of weeks ago, I overheard some kids talking about Classic Who, I had to correct them as they seemed to think that the 5th Doctor regenerated into the 9th & Sarah Jane was the companion before Rose.

seems to be the new series is creating a full myths about the classic series that needs to be explained.

Eh, to each their own. I much prefer Jo to Romana II, or Rose or Martha or a number of other companions, but YMMV.

Okay, maybe "never" is too harsh, but there were far too many times where The Doctor told her to do something without explanation and she wouldn't do it.

So I was in a used book store yesterday, a store that specializes in sci-fi/fantasy, looking for a completely different title when I came across... yep, Doctor Who! Imagine a wall where the bottom half is all drawers (like desk drawers) and every drawer is filled with books. Now imagine that each drawer is marked by the name of the author which is held in that drawer... and four of them, a whole column from top to bottom, labeled "Doctor Who". I didn't examine all of them in minute detail, but they appeared to be all novelizations, and most of them in fairly good condition. So if I ever get a hankering for reading a story I've missed (or has gone missing) I'll know just where to go. :D

Woah. Target novelisations.

Just a word of advice - get the missing stories if you can. Check wikipedia for a list of those.

To date, the only one of these I have is The Enemy of the World. I would love to see more.

^Are they pretty faithful to the original scripts, though; I thought I had heard some of them can be quite different.

ETA: And while we're at it, which ones should I focus on? :D

Apparently the Ian Marter ones are very good. Being of the video (and DVD) generation, I've never actually read one.

I kinda like Jo...well I like looking at Jo anyway!
