That was the best episode of House ever. So sad though. I couldn't stop crying from the point they woke Amber up until she died. :( And to think I hated her during the first half of the season. :(

I didn't tape it for a change, so I can't go back and watch again. But something's been bugging me: was it ever explained clearly just how the flu pills led to the type of poisoning (I can't pronounce it let alone spell it) Amber had? Was it simply an overdose, or the flu pills combined with the diet pills?

The bus accident shut down her kidneys. With her kidneys shut down they couldn't flush the flu pills out of her sysem and as a result they bonded with all of her major organs, damaging the irreversably.

A real possibility with those type of flu pills (Amantadine or something like that) but, if I remember from my medical-review link above right you've got to take quite a bit of them to do that kind of damage should your kidneys shut down.)

^^That's right, except the crash actually destroyed her kidneys.

But you have a point that they probably exaggerated the extent of the damage. It's probably something that would only happen if a person with kidney disease took them on an ongoing basis. Although I suppose it's possible Amber was overdosing on the Amantadine.

First off I have to say excellent season best yet, love the new docklings and finally:

Excellent episode. I mean just wow. One one hand I love that writers had the guts to make it so dark and on the other hand I hate the writers becaus I really like Amber and I feel sorry for Wilson. Fantastic performance by Anne Dudek, loved her scenes with Wilson at the end. :(

Wow. I haven't been rendered such a sobby, mucousy mess since Battlestar's 'The Ties That Bind.'

What a thoroughly amazing and depressing finale. Between the strong emotions and the constant 'head' CTB presence, it felt very much like an episode of BSG.

It did seem she was.

Upon watching it again I saw that she took (two?) pills in the bar after she sneezed and two more again on the bus after, I think, sneezing again. So it would seem that maybe she was OD'ing on them.

^^My first thought is that a doctor should know better than to overdose on a drug, but my second is that doctors might be more likely to get overconfident about their ability to modify their own treatment.

I thought that the idea of all the NuDoclings visiting Amber and acting like they're losing their BFF cheesy. They hardly tolerated her.

Otherwise, definitely Excellent.

Doctors make the worse patients.

You realize the titular doctor is "known" for taking viccodin like they're tic-tacs, right? ;)

On Kumar/Kal Penn I was remarking the other night to my friend how well I think he's turned out as a character. Judging from the closing montage he's as detatched from his job and the emotions in it as House is. Only he goes home and watches cartoons while eating cereal whereas his boss goes home, drinks smoke scotch, downs some viccodin and watches "The L Word" with the sound off.

;)

I think that was just the point. It's how people behave in a situation like that. Even if you don't like someone, once they're dying or dead you're suddenly all warm and caring to them. Partly because it's socially inappropriate to be any other way, partly because maybe you feel bad about treating them badly now that they've been subjected to far worse, partly because whatever. It happens, and it is tacky, because sometimes people do tacky things. The scene captured that well.

Forman pretty much said as much.

Taub (?): "But we didn't even LIKE her."
Forman: "We do now."

Agreed, but I would say that at the same time because they paid their respects to Amber, they were deeply affected by her death even if they didn't like her that much in life. This is particularly evident for Taub, who climbs into bed with his sleeping wife fully clothed.

Not to mention that Amantadine binds itself to protein in the bloodstream. :(

Yep, and cannot be cleared out by dialysis. Aparently not a fun drug to be on and its benifits on the flu are in doubt too. Granted, you're chances of dying while on it are only greater if you're suffering from kindey problems but, YIKES, nasty stuff.

On the episode, it was heart-breaking when CTB realized what had happened to her. :(

If there was a category for "really good, but not quite excellent" I would've picked that one.

I've just got to think that, with all the blood tests they did to scope for drugs and all of the research they did, they would've come across the fact that Amber was taking anti-virals without House having to, once again, do cruel, unethical, and just plain icky medical experiments on himself.

Otherwise, great episode in a great season.

And, I think these doclings have another season worth of interest. Then, toss 'em out and start again.
