Diet & Fitness Support Thread

When you guys are doing aerobic exercise what typical max heart rate are you targeting? For me I usually try to maintain 180 or so. My resting heartrate is about 48. Also how much do you run per session. Usually I would do about 4 to 5 miles on the treadmill.

That's pretty good. What's your average speed for the 4-5 miles?

A couple of weeks ago I was doing at least an eight minute mile every day, sometimes 1.5, sometimes two. Now I'm averaging two eight minute miles/day. I might do 4-5 on the weekends.

I don't keep track of my heart rate.

I keep it at the standard 8 minutes per mile on the treadmill. I like to run at that constant pace for about 40 minutes and at most 3 sessions per week. The rest of my "exercise time" mostly involve recreational sports like basketball and soccer.

Did 6.4 miles in 70 minutes on the treadmill at the YMCA. Pretty good for being 50 pounds overweight. Guess my biomechanics are right. Unlike my gluttony...

30 minutes on the eliptical, another 30 in the weight room and an hour in the pool today. Totally wiped out.

Just drank a delicious shake made of OJ, fresh strawberries and 'greens today' protein powder (50g protein and most of my veggie, vitamin and mineral needs for the day.) Time to be extra lazy for the rest of the night.

ugh, summer isnt good for me. I have more time, and I'm a bored eater so my weight losing is getting even harder than it was before.

Hey, Venardhi! Good to see you again. :)

I had a killer workout day. I went back to the gym for the first time since doing my 1/2 marathon last Saturday, and did a pretty intense workout. I also managed to injure myself rather spectacularly ... some nimrod had moved the weight benches around so there wasn't enough room to walk between them, and when I tried to slide around the bicep curl bench I ran my thigh directly into the sharp metal corner of the footrest for the incline bench. OUCH, OUCH, OUCH! I should take a photo when the bruise is at its peak - it's pretty colorful already.

Then I was overcome by madness a few hours later, and I decided that I should attend the "Yoga Relaxation" class at my gym. It was billed as a nice easy class, suitable for beginners and older folks. Perfect for me, who has never been able to handle yoga, right? :guffaw:

JESUS FRIGGIN' CHRIST! How do people DO this stuff? :wtf: I must be the most inflexible person in the world (not helped by the fact that I ran 13.1 miles a couple of days ago, I'm sure). Every single position was A) impossible to achieve, and B) excruciatingly painful! An hour of this was the exact OPPOSITE of "relaxing". I wanted to cry when it was over.

I'm back to my favorite form of relaxing now, with some SF on TV and a glass of wine in my hand. :techman:

I started a beginer yoga class years ago. Felt much the same way. All these pretzels lying around the floor and I couldn't even touch my toes. My only revenge were the strength moves which I could do.

I did stick with awhile and managed to limber up considerably. Won a five session private yoga class at the kids school auction last month so I'm going to give it a go again for a bit.

Well done! :techman: I know how you feel about old folk finishing ahead of you, though. A 76 year old guy finished ahead of me in my race!
Thanks. :) I learned a long time ago not to feel bad about being slow ... there are few runners out there as slow as I am! I felt proud during my last 5K when I finally passed an 80-year-old guy who'd obviously had a hip replacement. GO ME!

First of all, big congrats on you half-marathon!!!! Second, thanks for the laugh--the above quote is hilarious. I love it!

Ugh, I was supposed to run 4 miles last night but got the the gym late and ended up only having time for 3. On the plus side, I am averaging under 28 minutes for my 3 mile times, usually in the 27:30 range. Last night it was 27:37 for my 3 miles. It felt pretty good!

I'm hoping in the fall to cash in on my OSU alumni status and join the OSU gym, which is a few miles from my house. I would really like a larger gym with a better array of machines, a pool, a sauna, and a hot-tub/whirlpool. I like to make my evening at the gym something of a treat, and if I feel I have a lot of choices and can really relax afterwards with sauna or a nice whirlpool, then I'm happier for it.

Went clothes shopping today. It's nice to be down to a medium shirt and size 9 pants for once =/

Good for you, Hasu! That's one thing I'm NOT doing well right now ... it seems that increased running distance results in increased appetite for me. I'm in great shape, but I'm actually gaining rather than losing weight. D'OH!

^ Eh, you could be at the point where you are gaining muscle. I know Im gradually getting there with my legs and arms. As for my stomach...no muscle yet. Its weird how my pants are getting looser in the waister but tighter in the thighs. Maybe I can try running now....and not dieing while trying too.

And thanks :) Losing 20ish pounds in 8-9 months isnt easy with a grandmother who does nothing but feed you.

Oh how I used to love to run.... 5.4 in 62 minutes today. Plus 5 miles of walking our dog Oreo.

How do I crush the dreams? Gluttony.

Bored?? Tried Yoga. http://www.yogatoday.com/ :D I also am a bored eater and I make sure I have no more junk food.

Hi guys it's been a long time since i've been here. I finished my GMATs so I can now take care of my body. This week is going to be a new week and the fact that it is summer I can switch it up for exercising.

So far on Tuesday, I did weights (back and biceps). Yesterday Yoga. Today I'm planning to go out for a run, I'm contemplating b/w the gym and outside. I'm leaning towards the gym mainly because I could hop on the elliptical when I'm done and do some core work.

It's great to be back guys! Here's to a six pack!

Sure, just ask TJinLOCA about the wonders of yoga. :p

Hey, somebody brought a six pack! It's Miller time here in the fitness thread!! Hooray!

Oh, wait...

Borgminister, I'd love to run the distances you do. I find I don't have the patience to carve out the time, though. Good on ya, and I bet the dog loves those long walks.

Hasu, congrats on the new size! Feels good, doesn't it? I am a "bored eater" too (I just came to that realization the other day, believe it or not). My solution lately is to be lazier than I am hungry. Then I won't even get up to get something to eat. Didn't work today, though, when I was eating ice cream straight out of the tub...

TJinLOCA, I just can't imagine that you're gaining fat right now, with all the work you've been doing. It's got to be muscle. Tell it I said so.

As for me, only 2 miles tonight, but in 18 minutes! Go me.

Go team.

I think that's the new group motto:

It's got to be muscle. Tell it I said so.

Another week and made all five mornings at the gym. First practice for the summer softball team is Saturday night.

When I started back at the gym I weighed 234. I'm down to 222 now, and losing about a pound every 2 days. Running five miles a day helps.

So this is where all the fitness chickens are!

Last weekend I had pulled a calf muscle so badly that I could barely walk for about 24 hours. Luckily it got better with each passing day so last night I went to pilates for the first time in a week and it barely bothered me. :)

I'm psyched to get back into the routine again - while being careful of course. Since it's such a gorgeous day here today I'm thinking a bike ride around the lakes after work.

Sure, just ask TJinLOCA about the wonders of yoga. :p
Well, to be fair, I didn't say it was boring ... just excruciatingly painful!

TJinLOCA, I just can't imagine that you're gaining fat right now, with all the work you've been doing. It's got to be muscle. Tell it I said so.
:guffaw: I'll do that!

I *am* definitely gaining muscle ... but I'm also not getting any smaller in the waist, so I doubt very much I'm losing fat. And I could use a bit of fat loss if I want all my clothes to fit. :vulcan:

TJ, I guarantee if you don't drink any wine for a month you'd lose at least 5 lbs. At least.

Now that's crazy talk!

BTW, I'm down five pounds just by watching my portions. As for my fitness check in I biked an hour today, had pilates yesterday and biked an hour on Friday.

Here's the plan for this week:
Monday: Pilates
Tuesday: Biking if nice otherwise aerobic weight training
Wednesday: Nada, too much going on
Thursday: Pilates
Friday: Biking, aerobic weight training or spinning - depending on weather and how Tuesday went.
Saturday: Biking, aerobic weight training, spinning or weights - depending on how Wednesday and Friday went.

Spent 65 minutes on the elliptical machine the past two days. I'm down to 220; maybe even 219 (!) after I hit the gym today.
