Predict when STNG will have its "revival"

Hmmm I think its the only other ST show that did gain iconic status.

Well, I'll grant that in 5 years time, a lot more people will be able to place Picard and Data than Janeway or Kira, but, at least in my own experience, it's never more than 'that bald Star Trek guy', or things from the Next Gen (tapping the combadge, 'make it so', etc) incorrectly lumped in with the original series' pop culture 'presence'. Maybe it's a British thing. Despite the consistent 6pm run of TNG from start to finish on the BBC through the 90s, (probably the last time the BBC treated a genre show half decently) it hasn't gained the pop culture 'power' of TOS, outside of it's own fanbase (which although more numerous than many would admit, is not enough to carry a reboot).

God in heaven, I hope you're right.

That sounds horribly contrived to me. After the wretched crossovers with Barclay and Deanna in VOY and Kirk in GEN, I would not welcome this.
I'm not saying that we'll see everyone on one ship all working together such as seeing Titan with Captain Will, Counselor Deanna, Dr. Bashir as CMO, Torres as Chief Engineer, 7of9 as Science Officer, Kira as XO, etc. That would be too fanboyish, no doubt. Yet in a 6-hour miniseries, the story could involve several groups that are affected or involved but that never interact and don't do so directly.

When you put it that way, it does sound a lot better. But I still think it would be a bit much to try and revive all the old characters and cram them into one mini-series. I think a better idea would be to try and put together an anthology series. That way you leave the door open to have the old stars make guest appearances, while also allowing for new characters and new ideas.

I'd say that TNG is as iconic, or nearly so, but the key factor is political correctness. Most of TNG would probably be considered acceptable, or nearly so, today. It's Kirk's womanizing and shoot-first-ask-questions later attitude that allows the general public to identify with him in a manner that doesn't quite work for the stately, diplomatic-to-a-fault Picard.

And while it's a lot easier to imagine TOS being recast now that filming of XI has been finished, I have a hard time believing TNG could ever be recast. TNG wasn't quite as consistent in developing character storylines as the more recent shows have been, but it was definitely more regulars-based than TOS. Kirk had some history, but if you've got the look and swagger, you can imitate Shatner. With Picard, though, you not only need the look, accent and gravitas, but there's the whole Stargazer backstory/etc. to deal with.

Once the new movie is on the screen it's canon. With the new canon proceeding forward, TNG, DS9, and VOY will cease to exist as we know it. There won't be a revival of something that no longer counts. That's why it's kinda sad for me, I will always consider myself a TOS fan first, but i loved TNG and DS9 and the progression it took. Now, IMO, none of it will count. At least in the way we knew and or know it. With a new look and timeline the progression of the Star Trek universe could go in a direction that could ignore TNG altogether and it doesn't matter at all what was done before.

I guess in the end it's a whole growing up thing. Star Trek has been on my entire life. It's always been what it's been, take it or leave it. Well I chose to take it and its been a part of my life everyday up till now at age 32. Everything I have always loved could no longer matter.

Now we have a re-make coming out. This re-make has the opportunity to be great, but it also has the opportunity to take a nose dive. Which ever happens, the same result occurs. Everything from here on out will be different than what i have known my whole life as great. There could be a new TNG down the line but i don't think the franchise would be allowed to survive to that point, either it be by fans, the production companies, or general movie/tv audiences. By the way JJ has said the new movie will be for fans of movies, meaning general audiences.

I would love it if there were no re-make coming out and there was an actual revival of the TNG era, late eighties and early nineties. This new movie however changes everything though. In one year's time, the last 40 years will become obsolete.

The new movie though is supose to to tie into canon. To me the new movie is sort of like how the TOS movies made "TOS" look different with new special effects and uniforms and how TNG remade how we see the Trek universe, yet again. To me they are not erasing the timeline so much as changing our perception of it. This time with new actors, playing familiar characters. I think this is what will happen with TNG. We will see a change in perception but it will be done in a manner in which fans can still find away to connect it to what has been established.

I doubt we'll ever see TNG revived. Definitely not on the scale the original is being treated to. TNG and the immediate years afterwards eclipsed TOS. That lasted for the better part of a decade before it faded. The nearest thing I imagine will happen is an early 25th Century show where familar, if much older looking TNG/DS9/VOY characters guest star during sweeps.

To paraphrase Guinan:

"This isn't the end. As long as there's a handful to keep the spirit alive, you will prevail--even if it takes a millennium."

There's a certain magic about TNG that any honest person can't deny. I can't speak for DS9, VGR, and ENT, but something with such appeal as The Next Generation won't go quietly into that good night...
