TOS is experiencing what I consider a natural nostalgic revival after 40 years and after being out of the limelight for awhile. STNG had a movie that was disappointing (though it still made $120 million from all sources) to end its current run. What will trigger a revival and when???

Personally I think it will get a small boost if they ever remaster the show. But there probably won't be a revival for a good 10-12 years.

After STXIII. I figure we'll get 3 movies out of JJA over the next 6 years, which brings us to 2014, 20 years after TNG ended on TV. We'll get a miniseries perhaps with some characters from TNG, DS9, and VOY, ehich will be successful and turn into a weekly cable series.

tng isn't nearly as interesting as tos, so a major revival is not likely

I think there'll be a total reboot of the franchise after the new TOS movies.

We won't even recognize TNG after that...

That sounds horribly contrived to me. After the wretched crossovers with Barclay and Deanna in VOY and Kirk in GEN, I would not welcome this.

Just saw that JJ is including the STNG era in the movie, so don't be so sure....

I seriously doubt there will be a TNG era revival.

I think TNG is finished now. And it pains me to say that as it was my favourite Star Trek series. To expect otherwise though would make me sound like one of those awful TOS diehards from years ago who always expected a Sulu based series to be just around the corner. It wasn't. And the same is true here. TNG was a thing of beauty but it's over now. End of.

Are you referring to "miniseries?" If so, it's mini-series. In the USA, that's where a show has maybe 2, 3, or 4 parts; not a continuing series.

I'm not saying that we'll see everyone on one ship all working together such as seeing Titan with Captain Will, Counselor Deanna, Dr. Bashir as CMO, Torres as Chief Engineer, 7of9 as Science Officer, Kira as XO, etc. That would be too fanboyish, no doubt. Yet in a 6-hour miniseries, the story could involve several groups that are affected or involved but that never interact and don't do so directly.

I think this sounds like a nice idea. I can't see that it would be pushing the bounds of believability to see various familiar characters working together or indepdendently on the same problem or whatever. I'd welcome that. :)

Hypothetical plot for the miniseries: An unknown person or group develops a disease that kills off only Vulcans quickly and horrifically.

The USS Titan continues to be assigned to ambassadorial duties in the Romulan Empire. Suddenly, all of Capt. Riker's Vulcan crewmen die in an unexplained manner. He contacts Starfleet Medical and Capt. Beverly Crusher begins her research to find the cause and the cure. Genetically-engineered Dr. Bashir, on DS9, learns of the deaths and, having dealt with a similar situation (the Founders' Disease created by Section 31 years before) begins his own research. After a short while, he determines that the disease is far too complex to be from the present. He contacts Temporal Investigations and enlists the aid of an agent, 7of9.

Meanwhile, Captain Tuvok and the USS Voyager are sent to Vulcan to meet with the High Command to possibly determine who would want to eliminate their people.

On Romulus, Spock contracts the disease, which is killing him much more slowly due to his half-human make-up. He commandeers a warp ship and takes it to Earth where he meets up with Bev who can now better study the disease. Soon, 7of9 contacts Tuvok and between the two of them, they use flawless logic to figure out that the disease was created only as a ruse to cover some other plan.

Bashir and 7of9 travel to the Guardian of Forever to go forward in time to prevent the creation of the disease. Fifteen years into the future, they encounter an older Julian who has become as mad as the genetically engineered misfits that he lived with after being altered. Time was not a friend to him; the enhancements reversed, breaking him down physically and psychologically, causing him to become sociopathic and dilusional. He blames the Vulcan scientist who altered him as a child and is determined to destroy his life just as Julian's was destroyed.

Wesley Crusher travels there by his own means, despite being in direct violation of the Code of the Travelers. He sacrifices his existence to prevent the disease from being sent back. 7of9 and Bashir return to the restored present and life goes on seemingly. Soon, they discover that Wes was unable to completely correct the timeline when it is anounced on FNN (Federation News Network) that Spock has died of an unknown cause.

They return to Earth and Bashir's misfit friends track him down and tell him that Temporal Investigations has been formed an unholy alliance with Section 31 to prevent reunification of the Vulcans and the Romulans, which the former organization has determined will cause the fall of the Federation within 10 years; S/31 was quick to partner with T/I to save its beloved benefactor. And, the Misfits confirm that S/31 and T/I are correct in their prediction. What should Bashir and 7of9 do? Who can they trust?

In this admittedly amateurish tale, there is little direct interaction between several groups. Yet, the several groups and individuals that would have scenes in such a miniseries that are directly related and that would push the story along.

This is so not true... I mean the first part of the sentence.
Revival... I don't know. I can't imagine someone else playing these characters. Actually, Data is my favourite ST character and I can't imagine someone else playing him.
But I couldn't imagine someone else playing Spock before, and I like Qiunto very much now.

i.e. what the BBC consider a full season ;)

I can't see TNG getting the JJ treatment myself. It just doesn't seem the type of show - it's got a kind of corny nostalgia I guess, but it was seriously a product of the 80's - it would be very difficult to revive it without completely changing the outlook of the show and the character dynamics - the very things that would most set it apart from a visually updated TOS.

TNG may have been very successful in its time and have a lot of fans still around, but it never gained the iconic nostalgia of the Original 60s show.

Hmmm I think its the only other ST show that did gain iconic status. Its more a product of Roddenberry than of the 80s, in fact, 5 of its 7 years were produced in the 90s.

I didn't mean a revival in terms of new episodes or movies, but in terms of fans/nostalgia. Its too close to the end of the series and movies to expect the sort of nostalgic revival TOS is getting though it does get its share of attention. Its also had more exposure (over-exposure??) than TOS, since there was more of it and over a shorter period of time. With the human capacity for nostalgia, I can see a time 10-12 years from now when we'll see the same interest as TOS-remastered and the TOS-remake is getting.
