My one beef this week is - why does the Enterprise have a permanent counselor? We know from Where No Man Has Gone Before that they had a psychiatrist on board as a temporary assignment to monitor crew health on deep space assignment and that counselors were a TNG era thing but also that Helen Noel was a permanent member of the crew. So, was Helen Kirk's ship's counselor?

Not necessarily. Psychiatrists do a lot of talking therapies, they're just also medical doctors. Therapists' qualifications can be a lot more broad brush. Chivers is a doctor but might be a PHD is psychology. Space psychology!
My point remains. McCoy was stated repeatedly to have responsibility for the mental well-being of the crew. A counselor doesn't belong on TOS era ship IMO!
I work in the field. I'm aware psychiatrists can do talk therapy too. I work with a psychiatrist and they see some clients only for meds, some for both.
A counselor on a TOS ship makes sense to me.

Best thing Jellicoe did was force Sirtis into uniform (and I for one found her a lot hotter dressed like that, and I took her a lot more seriously into the bargain!)
She was supposed to be an intelligent member of the command staff.
Captain Jellico came in rattled the nerves of the crew, but he mostly made changes that the actors wanted. Ms. Sirtis herself wanted to be in an uniform. And I also believe she looks beautiful in the bunnysuit or the starfleet uniform.

Rewatched Squire of Gothos after this, which maybe I also did last time Trelane showed up, because it was all reasonably fresh. Very solid episode that, and it really doesn't fit in with SNW Trelane very well at all. I can't remember did the last Trelane episode establish a timeline for him? It still doesn't completely work but it would make more sense for the TOS to be in Trelane's past here even though it's in SNW's future.
Pike's cutting off Trelane from introducing himself is cringe continuity. I also don't like how Pike is seemingly in more of a late stage Picard/Q dynamic instead of taking things a little more seriously.
Making Trelane a Q last time out is in the same cringe category. And the extra Q wearing the post apocalypse weirdo court garb while simultaneously clearly being just introduced to humanity by Trelane is just sloppy.
Despite having no affinity for daytime soaps, the humor at least partially landed, watching the episode didn't feel like a complete slog like the last 4 weeks or so. The Sybock stuff was silly fun. Making fun of Star Trek V is far less problematic than playing TWoK for laughs in the muppet episode.
Comments about 16:9 and brighter lighting being better than the 2:1 "we're so cinematic" bullshit that this show is constantly failing to pull off are on point. Strip away the vaseline filter and you have a complete visual upgrade for this show.
The post soap opera drama didn't land quite as well. Anson Mount was good. But he has no chemistry with his fake daughter, just like he had no chemistry with his fake wife. I think he handled that crying-to-the-shrink scene better than the other Trek leads would have except for maybe prime Patrick Stewart.
The Trelane actor is perfect for the role. I know a lot of people are high on Ethan Peck, and I think he's fine, but there's such a difference when you have someone absolutely nail a role. Just because of the TOS ep rewatch, I have to say Nimoy's Spock is untouchable.
Post credits fake credits should have just been the opening credits. But I guess they felt they didn't want to use it to credit the actual actors and keep it more in tune with the episode. A mistake IMO.
But shout out to the people in the thread warning me that there was post-credits stuff. The Trelane cereal commercial was easily the funniest part of the episode.
I gave this a 5, same as what I gave the Dino ep. This was slightly more watchable than that but not worth bumping up to a 6. Still technically, somehow, the 'best' episode of the season to this point.
